Acceptable Use Policy and Network Permission Form

Sunnyside High School

Childrens Internet Protection Act

Congress created the internet protection act to screen harmful types of media
on the internet from children. Organizations that adhere to CIPA are given
subsidized services and products by the government. To properly adhere to CIPA,
organizations must block or filter internet pictures that are considered obscene,
contain child pornography, or are harmful to minors. Two additional requirements for
schools practicing the CIPA are monitoring the online activities and educating
minors about online appropriate behavior per the Protecting Children in the 21 st
Century Act. This includes interacting with people online, cyberbullying and
response.
Schools must also get and practice an internet safety policy with CIPA. In
brief, the policy should address minor access of inappropriate materials, safety and
security of minors when using communicative programs, unauthorized access,
unauthorized disclosure, and restricting access to materials that may be harmful to
minors. CIPA also notes that an administrator may unblock or remove filtering for
bona fide research purposes. Even though CIPA was created in 2000, it still
continues to guide and protect our children on the internet.

Acceptable Use Policy

We believe the internet and school network offer countless learning opportunities
for our students at Sunnyside High School. We cannot ignore the teaching
opportunities that internet usage offers SSHS. Subsequently, there are precautions
that must be taken when using a network. It is important that with such a powerful
learning tool, there are guidelines for usage that ensure the protection of all persons
connected. We must work together as a community to ensure that everyone has a
meaningful experience when using the schools network.
Section I. Privacy and Respect
I.
To ensure that sensitive need-to-know information does not fall
into the hands of people who would seek to do harm to our students and

It is the responsibly of all users to ensure the integrity, security
and availability of our network by respecting and protecting all network
resources (hardware, software, data). By signing this document you
acknowledge and agree that if you witness security violations by other
users on the network you will immediately report them to a network
administrator. It is solely the users (student, teacher or administrator) to
observe network policies and procedures. Also, albeit permission from an
administrator, no data, networks or other resources should be destroyed.
Not following this rule could lead to a discipline referral, loss of network
privileges, or termination. In addition to preserving resources, users
should share resources with other users on the network. More specifically,
using bandwidth-heavy applications could be restricted to ensure fair use.
Printing on school printers needs to be approved by a teacher.
III.
Sunnyside wants ensure that works created by our network
users are properly stored and protected. For this reason, it is forbidden to
plagiarize other students work that is created on the network. This
includes copying and pasting parts of others documents, using their
recorded audio files, or taking information from another source without
properly citing it. Additionally, students are not allowed to download illegal
copies of movies, games, eBooks, applications, or operating systems.
Sunnyside takes the downloading of pirated material as a serious offense.
Depending on the severity of the violation, consequences could result in a
verbal warning, discipline referral, suspension, or termination.
