Thegrade(alsocalledslope,incline,gradient,pitchorrise)ofaphysicalfeature,landformor
constructedlinereferstothetangentoftheangleofthatsurfacetothehorizontal.Itisaspecial
caseofthegradientincalculuswherezeroindicatesgravitationallevel.Alargernumberindicates
higherorsteeperdegreeof"tilt".Oftenslopeiscalculatedasaratioof"rise"to"run",orasa
fraction("riseoverrun")inwhichrunisthehorizontaldistanceandriseistheverticaldistance.
Thegradesorslopesofexistingphysicalfeaturessuchascanyonsandhillsides,streamandriver
banksandbedsareoftendescribed.Gradesaretypicallyspecifiedfornewconstructions(suchas
roads,landscapegrading,roofpitches,railroads,aqueducts,andpedestrianorbicyclecirculation
routes).

canbedividedbythehypotenuse(theslopelength).Thisisnottheusual
waytospecifyslopeitfollowsthesinefunctionratherthanthetangent

Railwaygradientsareusuallyexpressedintermsoftheriseinrelationtothedistancealongthetrackasapracticalmeasure.Incaseswherethe
differencebetweensinandtanissignificant,thetangentisused.
InEurope,roadgradientsaresignedasapercentage.[1]
