In the first section, I did well on identifying parallel structure. I was unsure of how I
would perform as I didnt remember all of the rules at first. I need to remember that the suffix
of a noun needs to match on both sides of the sentence. I did moderately well on misplaced
modifiers with a score of 70%. I struggled with reading too much into the sentence and trying to
overanalyze rather than remembering the modifier should follow the word it modifies. In order
to improve my performance regarding clear sentences, I will create simplified rules on notecards
to keep with me so I can access them whenever Im writing.
In the second section, I did well on major uses of the comma and apostrophes. I had
moderate success with numbers and hyphens. For the hyphen exercise, I guessed on the first
question to which one I thought sounded most correct. Then I learned A hyphen should be used
to connect two words functioning together as an adjective before a noun. I struggled with
Action vs. passive verbs. I learned that subject names the actor, not the receiver. I learned to
look for the subject and the verb that were right next to each other as a shortcut.
In the third section, I performed well on sentence fragments, run on sentences and
subject-verb agreement. I did moderately well with pronoun-antecedent. Once I realized the
pronoun and antecedent need to be collectively singular or plural, it was much easier to identify.
I struggled with knowing the difference between who and whom. After watching the tutorial on
who and whom, I was able to figure out that if the pronoun that would fit the sentence is him,
than you would use whom. If the pronoun that would fit the sentence is he, than who
would be used.
In the fourth section, I did moderately well on in-text citations. I did not do
extraordinarily well on any of these exercises. I remember using APA documentation back in my
undergraduate; however, it has been many years since Ive had to practice it. In order to improve
my performance regarding Research Exercises, I will review the exercise rules and try to tie in
my own rules for remembering them. I believe that once the prior knowledge is activated, the
easier writing and citing will become for me again.

Upon completion of this assignment, I realized that I am not as proficient in grammar and
writing as I initially thought. Grammar and writing were always a strength of mine in high
school; however, after having been out of practice for years, I seem to have lost my proficiency. I
would give myself a C+ or a B- on this assignment. I generated that score by averaging out my
scores on each exercise. In order to meet the universitys standards for writing, I have already
book marked this page as a reference tool to look back at when writing. Even just reviewing the
exercises and re-reading the rules that are given to correct a wrong answer will help me
remember and hopefully create a more permanent space in my brain. I also will utilize notecards
with grammar and documentation rules for easy access when technology isnt readily available. I
am also going to look into any apps that may be available for proofing. I definitely need more
improvement in documenting citations.
