Physical Properties
Extended Temperature Performance
Stainless Steels are high temperature alloys
and Staibar, Stairib and Staifix Hiproof have
excellent mechanical performance at elevated
temperature. Tests show that on tensile testing
at room temperature, after exposure to a
heating regime of 600C for 2 hours, the bars
show a negligible reduction in tensile stress
whilst that for conventional carbon steel shows
a significant drop in value over the same
temperature cycle. Austenitic stainless steels
do not undergo the ductile to brittle condition
change of conventional carbon steel as
temperature falls.
Impact tests on notched bars show a
ductile mode of failure at temperatures as
low as -196C.
Austenitic stainless steel bars are therefore
suitable for use in cryogenic and high
temperature applications.
Low Magnetic Permeability
Austenitic grades of stainless steel have
extremely low magnetic permeability
characteristics and are virtually non-magnetic.
This property can be very helpful to the
designer of structures housing equipment such
as electric arc furnaces, magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI) units or other sensitive electronic
equipment where a neutral magnetic
environment is a requirement.
Please note, Staifix Hiproof (Duplex) is a
magnetic steel.

Note: Plain round 1.4462 (Duplex) bars are available in diameters from 6mm to 50mm; the mechanical properties of the bars are dependent upon
the bar size and will vary in tensile strength from 450MPa - 650MPa minimum. Please contact Ancon Building Products for further information.
