HOMEWORK 8, Business Statistics, AGBU 501, Summer 2016

All the problems must be neatly handwritten and stapled together. Sloppy
homework assignments will be penalized. SHOW ALL WORK. Failure to do so will
reduce your grade by 10 points.
You MUST submit every homework assignment to be eligible to take the upcoming
exam. All homework assignments MUST be done on your own. No collaboration is
allowed. You can talk to the instructor or the TA if you have questions.
Due: 9:55 am, August 6
Late homework: no credit will be given, however, you still must submit it

PROBLEM 1 (20 points)
The manager of a paint supply store wants to determine whether the mean amount of paint
contained in 1-gallon cans purchased from a nationally known manufacturer is actually 1 gallon.
You know from the manufacturers specifications that the standard deviation of the amount of
paint is 0.02 gallon. You select a random sample of 50 cans, and the mean amount of paint per 1gallon can is 0.995 gallon.
a) Is there evidence that the population mean amount is different from 1.0 gallon (use =
0.01)?
b) Compute the p-value and interpret its meaning.
c) Construct a 99% confidence interval estimate of the population mean amount of paint.
d) Compare the results of (a) through (c). What conclusions do you reach?
PROBLEM 2 (20 points)
You are the manager of a restaurant that delivers pizza to college dormitory rooms. You have just
changed your delivery process in an effort to reduce the mean time between the order and
completion of delivery from the current 25 minutes. From past experience, you can assume that
the population standard deviation is 6 minutes. A sample of 36 orders using the new delivery
process yields a sample mean of 22.4 minutes.
a) Using the six-step critical value approach, at the 0.05 level of significance, is there
evidence that the population mean delivery time has been reduced below the previous
population mean value of 25 minutes?
b) At the 0.05 level of significance, use the five-step p-value approach.
c) Interpret the meaning of the p-value in (b).
d) Compare your conclusions in (a) and (b).
PROBLEM 3 (20 points)
A manufacturer of chocolate candies uses machines to package candies as they move along a
filling line. Although the packages are labeled as 8 ounces, the company wants the packages to
contain 8.17 ounces so that virtually none of the packages contain less than 8 ounces. A sample
of 50 packages is selected periodically, and the packaging process is stopped if there is evidence

that the mean amount packaged is different from 8.17 ounces. Suppose that in a particular
sample of 50 packages, the mean amount dispensed is 8.159 ounces, with a sample standard
deviation of 0.051 ounce.
a) Is there evidence that the population mean amount is different from 8.17 ounces? (Use a
0.05 level of significance.)
b) Determine the p-value and interpret its meaning.
PROBLEM 4 (20 points)
In New York State, savings banks are permitted to sell a form of life insurance called savings
bank life insurance (SBLI). The approval process consists of underwriting, which includes a
review of the application, a medical information bureau check, possible requests for additional
medical information and medical exams, and a policy compilation stage in which the policy
pages are generated and sent to the bank for delivery. The ability to deliver approved policies to
customers in a timely manner is critical to the profitability of this service. During a period of one
month, a random sample of 27 approved policies is selected, and the total processing time, in
days, is recorded in AGBU 501_HW7_Problem 4 data file.
a) In the past, the mean processing time was 45 days. At the 0.05 level of significance, is
there evidence that the mean processing time has changed from 45 days? Use the ttest
varname command to compute t test and p-value. Report the output.
b) What assumption about the population distribution is needed in (a)?
c) Do you think that the assumption stated in (b) is seriously violated? Explain.
PROBLEM 5 (20 points)
Late payment of medical claims can add to the cost of health care. An article reported that for
one insurance company, 85.1% of the claims were paid in full when first submitted. Suppose that
the insurance company developed a new payment system in an effort to increase this percentage.
A sample of 200 claims processed under this system revealed that 180 of the claims were paid in
full when first submitted
a) At the 0.05 level of significance, is there evidence that the proportion of claims processed
under this new system is higher than the article reported for the previous system?
b) Compute the p-value and interpret its meaning.
