Its not only the Lincoln residents who visited the former Beermanns Restaurant
who are excited about the restaurant opening its doors under a new owner and management.
Former Bay Area residents Matt Azevedo and Andrew Palamides are excited that
opening day is here.
And theyre working around the clock to make sure customers of the new Beermanns Restaurant at 645 5th St. will be so pleased with their dining experience that
they become regular visitors.
Azevedo is the restaurants executive chef and Palamides is the head brewer.
Were really, really excited to bring Beermanns back, Azevedo said.
For the last 10 months, owner Curtis Smith has completed major repairs, including
roof and structural repairs, before the restaurant could open.

This building has been the center of downtown for decades, Azevedo said. Its

The building is beautiful and historic and I enjoy being in downtown Lincoln, Palamides said. Its nice being close to everything.
The building has served as a restaurant throughout the years on
Fifth Street but has been vacant for several years.
Our goal is to honor the history of this building and bring

something fresh and local to Lincoln. We have a bit of an identity
crisis at Beermanns. Its an old landmark of Lincoln and we have
to preserve the Beermanns identity but offer something exciting,
Azevedo said. Nowadays, people are looking where their food
comes from and how its prepared and well put out a product out
that residents deserve. Well be using produce from Del Rio Farms
in Sacramento and try to source meat, chicken and pork as locally as
possible.

Azevedo calls the locally sourced, fresh food casual approachable

but with a fine dining attention to details.
Our goal is to create an experience through the food, the beer
and the atmosphere, Azevedo said.
It will take about two months before Beermanns Restaurant
starts brewing its own beer, according to Palamides, because the
brewery in back is being updated.
Until he starts brewing American lager, though, Palamides said

he will sell local Northern California craft beer. Other beers will be
traditional lagers and ales, including a West Coast IPA and a dry
stout.
Palamides previously worked at Black Vinyl/Boneshakers for one

year in Rocklin and brewed for seven years in Berkeley.

I love it here. The brew house is in good condition, Palamides

said.
The downtown restaurant offers burgers, pizzas, sandwiches,

steak, appetizers, salads and a full bar. Its open 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Tuesdays through Saturdays. The restaurant will be open Mondays,
according to Azevedo, hopefully by fall.

After someone fills out the 10-field form, a volunteer probes to

uncover the history.
And, its OK if inquirers want to do their own research.
We have people that come in that just want to look and look. You
have to read your audience, Jansen said.
To make research more user friendly, the museum is currently in the

tedious process of making all the archives available on a computer to be
searchable. This project is being spearheaded by another volunteer, Bill
Clinton, who is doing all the data entry.
While the museum is

relatively new, its collection is not

Museum and do research for those asking. Some volunteers have
been in Lincoln all their lives.
To send this task force to work, an inquiry is requested into families, events, real estate, businesses, geography, cemeteries, local Native
Americans or some other notable piece of history.
And, the research tools at the museum are abundant.
The museum started in 1993 by three men. Wes Freeman, Don

Logan and Jerry Logan were members of the Native Sons of the
Golden West, a group dedicated to preserving history in California.
The three collected a stockpile of items from Lincolns past, which
became the foundation for the Archives Museum.
Today, the museum is chalk full of thousands of pieces from
history.

start the research?

When people bring articles or photographs in here, I take pictures

or scan them in there to build a computer record. So everyone can
search for family and family history. People can go back and find a family name and see where they came from, Clinton said.
When we first started acquiring things, we were not as astute to
document. Now were catching up, Russell said.
WHATS IN THE MUSEUM

The museum has quite the mishmash of historical pieces, but it all
relates to the history of Lincoln. And its still growing.
Somebody will say, I have this item, maybe its a quilt or something,
do you want it? And well say yes, Kathy Freeman said, curator and
widow of one of the museums original founders.
The museum houses a variety of displays from the past. A favorite
among the volunteers is the kitchen, equipped with an icebox, a stove
and a cabinet full of old coffee cans and such. There is also a Native
American exhibit, as well as a make-shift blacksmith shop, a sewing
room, a military exhibit, a Gladding McBean display and a video
screening area that shows slides of old Lincoln photographs.
School groups of second- through fifth-graders are common visitors

to the museum. Particularly enjoying the display of old toys and the

hands-on collection of old telephones and

typewriters, the museum packs in as many
as 120 students in a day. In addition, Boy
Scouts, special education students, Red Hats,
antique appreciators and families are regulars
at the museum.
An adorable couple came here on their

first date, Freeman said. That was very cute.
The museum also hosts a downtown walking tour on the first Saturday of the month.
Theres a booklet that goes with it or
people can do it on their own. You go a block
and it takes over an hour, Russell said.
Contact the museum ahead of time to take

the tour.
One of the priorities of the museum is to
get the word out that theyre open and ready
for visitors.
I dont think theres a day or week that

goes by and someone says, I didnt know you
were here, Jansen said.
So for those interested in Lincoln, pop in

to the museum and take home a better appreciation for the towns rich history.

Chocolate bars spiked with coffee for a kick of caffeine
offee and chocolate. For many it is a perfect combination of bitter and sweet.
Lincoln residents Darlene and Gary Kramer, owners of Blabbermouth Chocolates, have found a way
to combine coffee and chocolate into a candy bar with a kick. The couple opened their downtown Lincoln shop, located at 448 Lincoln Blvd., May 1.
Originally we started out of our home, Darlene Kramer said.We started the business almost three years ago
and it was wholesale only.
Darlene said the couple had to find a brick-and-mortar location because we couldnt do e-commerce under a
cottage business license through the county.
Coffee shops were our first customers, Darlene said, adding that Insight Coffee shop was their first exposure. We gained some notoriety through Sacramento Magazine and local television.
Gary Kramer said the couple operated out of a space on Flocchini Circle for two years but lost their lease. He
added that the business has been built one phone call at a time.

We were unable to find another suitable location in

Lincoln and at the last minute this space opened up, Darlene Kramer said. The city gave its blessing but said we had
to do retail. Were more comfortable with wholesale, but were
actually happy with the outcome.
We fought to stay in Lincoln, Darlene Kramer added. Weve

lived here since 2000.
Gary Kramer said he wanted to thank Gary Eide, chief building

official for the City of Lincoln, for going above and beyond in helping
the couple find a place to do business.
Theres not enough light industrial in the city for small businesses, Gary Kramer said. We are in Lincoln because we want to be in
Lincoln.
Gary Kramer said after attending their first chocolate festival they
were advised to stock their chocolate bars in truck stops. The 49er Truck
Stop in Sacramento was the first to stock their candy bars with an initial
order of 12 dozen.
Now we are in truck stops in Portland, Ore., Chicago, Wyoming,
Utah and, one of the biggest, the Iowa-80, Gary Kramer said. Were
actually keeping truckers awake at night with the caffeine in our chocolate bars.
Making chocolate bars may not seem a
likely venture for the Kramers; Darlenes
background is in accounting and Garys is in
title and escrow sales.
I came home one day and told Gary I
want to be a chocolatier, Darlene Kramer
said. I took a course and became a professional chocolatier. Ive since taken additional
courses in Canada and Chicago.

Darlene Kramer said she tested her coffee and chocolate candy bars
on her neighbors.
All of them said I should go into business, Darlene Kramer said.
Now Blabbermouth Chocolates are in some Nugget Markets, Safeway stores and Whole Foods.
It took eight months to get into Whole
Foods, Gary Kramer said. Were
grateful because they are hard to get
into.
Darlene Kramer said she uses Belgian
chocolate and sources great roasters.
We dont cut corners and we want premium

roast, Darlene Kramer said. We use five coffees, ranging
from light roast to dark; Columbian, Costa Rican, Espresso, French Roast and Mocha Java.
The Kramers estimate their Willy Wonka machine pours 1,000-1,200 chocolate bars per week.
Its just Gary and myself; its our passion, Darlene Kramer said. Who doesnt want to work with chocolate? We hand-wrap every bar and caramel and we are here seven days per week.
Gary Kramer said their customers are definitely aware of the coffee in the chocolate bars.
The caffeine provides a nice, comfortable increase in energy, Gary Kramer said.
The Kramers came up with the business name after Gary mentioned the business idea to his brother and
Darlene called him a blabbermouth.
Blabbermouth Chocolate is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

PESTO PASTA
ZUCCHINI NOODLE PESTO PASTA
3 whole zucchinis
A handful of cherry tomatoes
1 cup Parmesan
1 cup fresh mozzarella ( I like the mozzarella balls)
1 whole red bell pepper
Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup of fresh pesto
2 small basil leaves
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 tablespoon minced garlic
Additional: grilled chicken breast

I know that if I ever get the chance to go to Italy

I will eat pasta and pizza for every meal of every day.
Since I am not in Italy and am not prepping for a
marathon, my body should not be consuming that
many carbohydrates.
This recipe is refreshing and light with a savory sweet satisfaction

that all great Italian dishes possess. The best part is you get a fusion of
flavor without the heavy feeling of being overly full after a plate or two.
Since this is basically just a fancy way to cut vegetables, I recommend either making a meat sauce on top or grilling some chicken to
go on the side. It is incredibly important to not overcook the zucchini
noodles or they will release too much water and completely ruin your
delicious sauce. Its best to just warm them either in the oven or on the
stove with a splash of olive oil and Italian seasonings.
Too much salt will also cause the zucchini to sweat. A trick would
be to spiralize the zucchini and leave salted on a paper towel to help
remove any access water, blot dry, then cook.
The roasted red bell pepper was also a nice additional sweet taste.
Note: if your toppings are hot (sauce, tomatoes, peppers, etc.) it will aid
in the cooking of the Zucchini Noodles.
Transport yourself to Italy and still be able to fit swimsuit this
summer.

ROASTED RED BELL PEPPER:

Set oven to broiler on high setting. Quarter the bell pepper
and remove all of the seeds. Line a baking sheet with tin foil
and place the quartered bell pepper skin up. Drizzle lightly
with olive oil. Broil on high for about 10 minutes or until the
skin is wrinkled and slightly blackened. Check periodically so
he peppers do not burn.
Remove from the oven and allow to cool enough to peel off
the wrinkled skin. It should fall off pretty smoothly.
Slice the peppers into thin strips and place in the pasta sauce.
HOMEMADE SECRET PESTO
INGREDIENTS AND DIRECTIONS:
3 tablespoons pine nuts
1 cup basil, packed
2 tbs olive oil to 1 tbs. balsamic vinegar
Salt and pepper to taste
1 cup Parmesan
2 cloves of garlic
Blend everything in a food processor, except the Parmesan
cheese, until smooth.
Once you have achieved a desirable smooth texture, slowly
pulse in the Parmesan cheese. For a finer texture use
powdered Parmesan as opposite to a fresh block.
ZUCCHINI NOODLES:
Use a spiralizer to form the zucchini noodles. Do so with all
three zucchinis and set on a paper towel. Lightly salt the
zucchini noodles and let sit for 15 minutes.
You can peel the zucchini ahead of time if that is your
preference. I prefer skin on.
Once the noodles have sat for 15 minutes, blot them dry with
a paper towel. Heat the olive oil in a skillet until hot. Saut
the garlic in the oil until fragrant. Add sliced tomatoes (or any
other desire veggies) until soft.
Pour pesto sauce over the veggies until warm. Set aside.
Place the noodles in the same skillet to warm for no more
than a minute. Serve the noodles with the sauce poured on
top and add fresh mozzarella and grated Parmesan cheese.
