the question
Today was an introductory day to what happens on a typical day at the SMES library.
There are currently 5 librarians that work in the library (3 for the lower school and 2 for the upper
school). The library is on a fixed schedule which means the students are required to come in
during certain periods of the day. There were classes coming in and out of the library all day in
both the upper and lower school portion so it was nice to see the library utilized in that way. It
was very helpful to observe a preK and 2nd grade lesson on my first day here and see what the
different level librarians do. The 4th and 5th grade lesson that I completed went really well
considering it was my first day in the library. Having the grade level librarian in the library was
extremely helpful and were able to instruct students on their specific ways of doing things during
the session. It was difficult to plan a lesson for a 40 minute period (and be able to give them 510 minutes of browsing time) and I had to cut it down from my original lesson I had planned but
the students were engaged through the lesson and were able to browse after completing the
worksheet that I gave them. Overall, it was a good first day and Im looking forward to work on
the administrative tasks and helping with the day to day library circulation for the rest of the this
week.

3/29 - 7:30am - 3:30pm

Total Hours Completed = 8
Lower School Chapel Visit
Visit to the school chapel with the lower school. Lower schools are required to go
to chapel every day while Upper school is required to go to chapel on Thursdays.

BOB Reading List Upload into LibGuides

LibGuides is a website builder specifically for school libraries and I was able to
get an overview of how it works and how the librarians are able to create different boxes
and tabs for their own library webpage. The BOB Reading List is an anticipated list that
gets posted in the Spring of each year, so I worked to upload all the titles with a synopsis
and link to a book talk on YouTube so that they could release it later that month
Observation - 5th grade - Food Labels & Nutrition
I observed the Lower School librarian complete the same lesson that I did earlier
in the week with her 5th grade class
Creating Book Trailers for BOB titles
Worked to find more book trailers for the BOB titles as well as create some of my
own for books that may not have them
Today I had the chance to visit one of the major school sites which was the chapel and
see how a Lower School student starts their day. It was interesting to see how they integrate
the religious aspect into the school each morning because although it is an Episcopalian school,
that doesnt seem to be the main focus of the classes. I was also able to work with LibGuides
today which was really interesting. Its a great tool for libraries who want to build their own
website but have a lot of control over the layout and functions. I was also able to learn more
about the BOB books which is the Battle of the Books list that is sent out each year. Being able
to observe the lesson plan that I completed the previous day by another librarian was also
extremely helpful to see how others work with elementary age students and things I could
change to make my own lesson better. Overall, today was a good mix of being able to look at
administrative duties as well as work with students again.

3/30 - 7:30am - 3:30pm

Total Hours Completed = 8
Food Nutrition judging
Upper School had a food nutrition competition where they had to create a healthy
lunch or snack. We tasted different foods and rated them on health, taste, and
appearance
Makerspace Lab Tour Middle School
The school has 3 Makerspaces on campus and I was able to talk to the teacher
in charge of the MS Makerspace. They have a 3D printer, access to design software,
and other tools that students can use if they enroll in the course
Library Team Meeting

Each Wednesday the librarians have a team meeting where they see what
projects and administrative tasks need to be completed
Observation - Lower School Tech Course
The Lower School Makerspace is where the tech course takes place and I was
able to watch students use Lego Robotics to build pulleys and catapults.
Lesson - 5th graders - Sugar and Nutrition
Helped to teach the Sugar and Nutrition lesson to another class of 5th graders
Help with Religion Class
Assisted further in helping students with their religion research and answered
questions as they were copying information from their books
Today was a very full day and I got to see a lot of different aspects of the school and not
just the school library. Helping to judge the nutrition contest was a lot of fun because I had been
teaching about health and wellness all week and the students were very creative with their
dishes! I also enjoyed being able to talk to the teacher in charge of the MS Makerspace lab and
the Lower School tech course. The Lego Robotics was a lot of fun to watch being implemented
into a classroom. The classes are so short for electives though that it felt like students didnt
have enough time to work through a lot of the problems they were having with their
assignments. The most rewarding part of the day was being able to help the 5th grade students
with their religion projects and help them pull information from the books they were using. They
were all choosing different religions to study and it was interesting to answer questions or help
them to broaden or narrow the questions they were asking.
3/31 - 7:30am - 3:30pm
Total Hours Completed = 8
Summer Reading List
Discussion of the Summer Reading List and what books would be used to
compile the list. Decided on using the Tartan Canon which is a list of essential books
that each grade level should have read
Book Trailers
Worked further on book trailers for books on the BOB list
Observed MS debates
One of the MS classes had a debate in the library today and were separated into
the defense and prosecution. They had a panel of judges that chose a winner of the
debate.
Assisted installing software with 4th graders

The 4th graders are using Minecraft for a project and needed help installing and
setting up the software to be able to screen capture
Overview of Destiny Follett
The Lower School librarian gave me a broad overview of Destiny and how they
use it for cataloguing and running reports
Today I worked mostly on the summer reading list that would be given out to parents and
administrators at the Library Luncheon later in the school year. The librarians developed the
Tartan Canon which is a list of books that are essential for each grade level. We decided that
those would be the books they would use for the summer reading list that year so that students
are exposed to classics as well as modern books that are important. It was a great project to
work on because I was able to learn how to compile a book list and create a collection based
upon a grade level. I was also able to create the reading list sheet that would be given out to
parents. Being able to assist the 4th grade classroom with the software install was also
interesting because it showed me that the library is typically the tech center of a school and a lot
of teachers go to the library for help with tech related issues.
4/1 - 7:30am - 3:30pm
Total Hours Completed = 8
Summer Reado Cards
Discussion with the librarians on how they would like the Reado cards to be set
up for the summer reading programs as well as what categories they would like.
Created a mockup of cards for them to use
Talk with Karen - online services librarian
Discussed with Karen what her role is within the library - she renews the
database subscriptions, creates tutorials online, and helps with the online library that
they have. She is also taking courses in instructional design
Tour of Upper School Makerspace
Toured the Upper School Makerspace and saw some of the projects they have
completed that school year
Book Shelving
Helped to shelve books in the Lower School library and a discussion of how the
books were laid out as far as fiction and dewey decimal system
Today was the last day of my field work so I helped to finish up the rest of the projects
that I was working on such as the book trailers and reading lists as well as create the Reado
cards that would be used for summer reading as well. They decided to create Bingo cards with
categories for reading such as Reading a 700 Dewey Book or Read a book from the Tartan
Canon and once they got a line they would come back into receive a prize. It was fun to be able

to do a project like this that would help to encourage reading over the summer. I also completed
another tour of a Makerspace on campus and had a discussion with the online services librarian
about what she does to help in the library. She mentioned that she does more Ed Tech services
than she previously did (such as helping with the Minecraft software) and that was interesting to
hear since that doesnt seem to be a part of her job description. Overall, it was a great last day!
