Understanding the Bible
In the reading of the Bible, several things caught my attention. I have always had
problems reading and understanding the bible, because the text is so confusing and uncommon. I
never understood how God, the father, Jesus, the son, and The Holy Spirit could be one, or how
Eve was created from a rib of Adam. All my life I have wondered how some things came to be
and had a hard time believing the given scriptures that our pastor put before us.
I became so involved in this reading because I do consider myself a Christian and a
believer in God. Even though I do not understand I was raised to seek out understanding. Often I
have not attended church because of lack of understanding, even when I could catch on to a little
bit, I was still lost. I really enjoyed reading the book of Genesis, and I hope to become more
involved in the study of the bible with my new found interest.
Another thing that caught my attention in the book of Genesis was the creation of Man
and Woman. I have heard sermons of the creation of the heaven and the earth and man and
things of this world. But the story of God taking that rib from Adam and putting him to sleep,
and creating Woman, is a very powerful. I think that the importance of this story is necessary in
the world that we live in. Mankind receives all these things from God who has only asked that
we be obedient. He gave Adam a companion and she in turn gave the mankind sin. It is sad that
since the beginning of creation we were easily persuaded. Even though before now I could never
get this far in the bible I do now understand why the book of Genesis is so crucial to the bible. In
the bible Adam says "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh, she shall be called
woman because she was taken from man."(p58) In todays society you may hear people talk all
the time about soul mates, and I even heard a future wife referred to as "my rib" before. There is
someone for everybody, made by God and pleasing to whoever they were created for.
At the beginning of the reading "The Fall" it spoke of how God had to teach humankind a
lesson. So he deprives them of their common language. This is interesting because this explains
why there are some many different languages spoken in this world. It states "God is afraid that if
they succeed, they will recognize no limits to their ambitions."(52) Mankind thought that they
could build a tower high enough to reach the heavens and see for themselves, the creator that
they have been reading about on those tablets since they were born. That is truly amazing. I have
to wonder if God then saw fit to create an atmosphere that would destroy mankind if they ever
tried this again. It is written for millions of years that when gods and God get angry they destroy
mankind and everything else in the world. Sort of like creating a master piece and realizing that
it has flaws, then clearing what you have done to start again, hoping to achieve perfection the
next go around.
In conclusion, I do believe that the truth is on our minds and hearts. And it is necessary
for our healths sake to believe in a higher being. To believe in a higher power does seem
senseless, but it makes us wonder, why else would we suffer for doing things that are bad. Also
how come when someone has a near death experience they talk about this light and seeing loved
ones that have long before them passed on."In all the range of his creation, there is only one
being able to resist him-Humankind." (52) In the end it makes sense. We suffer for Adam and
Eve's disobedience, and have been given an option to serve the God. It is truly a gift, it is called

Ryan 7

free will. The bible is interpreted in different ways some are easy to understand and others
require a deep interest and understanding for literature and the creation of the world. I find it
easier to read from this text, because it is something that I have to understand, in order to pass
this class. My free will would not allow my mind to grasp what my parents and pastor have been
trying to make me understand since I was a little girl. I think that this particular topic will help
me in my present life. Because I have already made plans to start back going to church.
