Discussion Section Attendance Policy

Please come to the Friday sections on time (arriving later than 10 minutes will result in an absence) and prepared,
with a printed copy of your response for that day. I will not take handwritten copies, as they are hard to read, or
emailed copies. If you find yourself unable to attend the section that day because of illness or a family emergency,
please email me ASAP. You are allowed two absences for this section (the Friday discussion section) only, but
missing information often means misunderstanding material later in the course.
You should note that the weekly responses, while only one page long, comprise 40% of your overall grade, so
missing this section will negatively affect your grade. In addition, there is a 10% participation component for this
course. In order to gain this percentage, you should plan to speak up at least a few times during the semester. I
understand many people are shy; coming to my office hours and discussing material can also help you with this
portion of your grade.
Required Textbooks
Five books, available at the SIU Bookstore and from numerous online vendors, are required. Please bring the Martin
textbook and the associated play or poem textbook to each section, as this will help you understand the material
better and will allow you to make notes accordingly:
Richard Martin, Myths of the Ancient Greeks (New American Library, 2003).
ISBN-10: 0451206851. ISBN-13: 9780451206855.
Apostolos Athanassakis, The Homeric Hymns, 2nd edition (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2004).
ISBN-10: 0801879833. ISBN-13: 9780801879838.
Homer, The Odyssey, translated by Robert Fagles, introduction by Bernard Knox (Penguin, 2006).
ISBN-10: 0143039954. ISBN-13: 9780143039952.
Sophocles, The Three Theban Plays, translated by Robert Fagles (Penguin, 1984/2000).
ISBN-10: 0140444254. ISBN-13: 9780140444254.
Euripides, Ten Plays, translated by Moses Hadas and John McLean (Bantam, 1990/2006).
ISBN-10: 0553213636. ISBN-13: 9780553213638.
*Note: The bookstores ordered an old copy, and Dr. Allen requires the newest one. The SIU
Bookstore will refund and replace this one for you.

Weekly Writing Assignments

Most weeks will require a writing assignment of you. These will take the form of a single page (computer-printed
hard copy, single-spaced, in 12-point Times, with one-inch margins) in which you will respond to some prompts,
distributed in advance, about the readings for that week. These must be completed in advance and brought with you
to your Friday section meeting, where they will be turned in. If you know you will be unable to attend class (a
funeral, scheduled appointment, etc), please email me ahead of time so we can make alternate arrangements. Any
papers turned into my mailbox without previous arrangements will not be graded.
Grading Rubric:
A: Assignment is required length and answers questions, using page numbers and quotations to support answers.
Makes connections to other works that we have studied as well as material covered in Dr. Allens lectures.
B: Assignment is required length and answers questions, using page numbers and quotations to support answers.
C: Assignment fails to use page numbers or quotations; falls short of required length; shows failure of having
understood material.
D: Assignment falls incredibly short of required length; forgets to use page numbers or quotations; consistently goes
off-topic or shows that student has not read the material.
F: Assignment fails to cover material or is not turned in.
Office Hours and Emailing
If you have questions, please speak with me in person during or after lecture, and/or during our office hours (listed
above). Questions that cannot be addressed in person after lecture or during our office hours may be posed via email;
all queries via email should be directed me, not Dr. Allen, unless it is something that Dr. Allen alone can answer.
Please address Dr. Allen as Dear Dr. Allen in emails, and myself as Dear Jerrica (it is not necessary to call me Mrs.
Jordan). Include a subject (Mythology is fine) and a closing. Consider this training for the real world, in which your
boss would expect you to do the same. I will generally respond to you within 24 hours, if not sooner.
Electronic Devices (Laptops / Tablets / Phones / etc.)
To ensure that you and your fellow students enjoy a distraction-free environment, no electronic devices (including
laptops, tablets, and phones) are allowed in our course. This goes for the lecture section and discussion sections.
Miscellanea
Please do not hesitate to approach me before or after class, drop by during my office hours, or ask for an appointment
to meet at some other time; Im happy to chat. My sections are so close together that I likely will not be able to stay
and answer questions between sections; however, you are welcome to walk with me between Quigley and Pulliam if
you wish.
Should you have any special needs, please contact me as quickly as possible so we can try to make accommodations.
Onwards! the Muses call.
