The curriculum combines the mindset that
children learn best through play while also
focusing on helping children prepare for todays
elementary school and what that looks like with
Common Core, Hansen said.
Looking ahead, Growing Brilliant plans to open
another school in the Greater-Sacramento area before the start of the next school year. Hansen hopes
to offer both parent participation classes and
preschool early education at its newest location.
The parents could do both, or they could start
out with parent participation and then move into
the preschool, Hansen said. We have been doing
them separate in Rocklin and Roseville, which has
been great and works well for those locations, but
to have them together is really exciting.

When it comes to speed and security, Wave

delivers for customers, Gregory said.

GROWING BRILLIANT
open a new location in the Sacramento-area before the upcoming school year, has been placed
on the Placer Heralds 2016 Best of the Best list.
Growing Brilliant, an early-education focused
preschool with locations in Roseville, Folsom
and Rocklin was previously featured on both the
2014 and 2015 lists. Opened in 2013, Growing
Brilliant offers early education preschool at its
Roseville and Folsom locations and hosts parent
participation classes at its Rocklin location.
Owner Lisa Hansen attributes Growing Brilliants success to the motivated staff of teachers
and curriculum-based education that she developed herself. Hansen is currently completing her
doctorate in education.
Its hard to find a school where you have the
professional teachers that have the drive to
create their own lesson plans and help create
the curriculum, Hansen said. But at the same
time they have the structure of the curriculum

their money was in safe hands.
If handling the banking offices was tough,
Wells Fargos express men had it even tougher,
especially in Placer County. Robberies were a
major threat and the bank eventually established its own detective agency. Myron Angels
book The History of Placer County mentions
dozens of stage robberies during this era, with
two of the most notorious routes for crime being
the Foresthill to Auburn route, and Placerville to
Auburn route.
On Nov. 28, 1871, a Wells Fargo stagecoach
traveling from Auburn to Placerville was robbed
of $10,047.50 in coin and gold dust. The highwaymen took the loot from Wells Fargos lockbox.
According to the documented account, the robber
had a fence across the road, a six-shooter slung
in view, and pointed a Mississippi Yager at the
driver, William H. Hill, and said, Hand out Wells,
Fargo & Co.s box or I will blow your head off.
The felonious caper ended with the robber
getting the box.
Today, Wells Fargo is a banking empire that
literally stretches across the globe; but its
agents, riders and shotgun messengers in the
early days of Placer County played an important
role in making the company a success on the
western frontier.

Wells Fargo Bank has been in existence since

1852, and its history in Placer County was forged
largely by a 20-year-old bank agent who helped
turn gold nuggets and bags of glitter dust into
the foundation for a community.
John Quincy Jackson was born Feb. 26, 1832
in Petersburg, Virginia. At the start of the Gold
Rush he sought adventure by traveling to California by way a steamer known as the Glenmore.
He arrived in San Francisco in the memorable
year of 1849. In 1852 Wells, Fargo & Company
named the then-20-year-old Jackson the operating agent for their express and banking office
at 1584 Lincoln Way in Auburn. The branch was
located where the Testa Building sits today.
A number of books on Auburns early history
have reported that Jackson was in charge of
sending Wells Fargo monthly shipments of gold
dust that could weigh as much as 750 pounds,
which was some $200,000 worth of treasure.
The shipments were sent so often Jackson
had to manage them in increments of 100 to
150 pounds at a time. The job was tiring, with
Jacksons crew having to work all day and into
the night. Besides handling local banking tasks,
Jackson was also receiving, forwarding and shipping packages to just about any place.
Jacksons job often left him working alone
with large sums of cash and gold. Numerous
accounts say his main line of security was a
120-pound Bullmastiff named Jack. In 1855
Jackson reportedly played an important role in
keeping the great bank panic if that year from
toppling Auburn. The trusted personality held

Three months before getting a big win in the

Press Tribunes Best of the Best contest, a catering business with South Placer connections
announced it will be joining Downtown Rosevilles revitalization movements by relocating
to Vernon Street and opening a full restaurant
and events center.

Randy Peters was recognized by Press Tribune
readers in the 2015 Best Of Roseville edition,
earning the title of Best Wedding and Event
Caterer. The company cooks for events as far as
San Francisco and Lake Tahoe, but draws most
of its clientele from the Roseville area.
Weve been looking for a building for about
three years and we really felt this building was
perfect for us, said Lisa Peters, president of
the company. We like what the city is doing
Theres definitely a need within Placer County
for more upscale event centers.
The 14,300-square-foot facility is scheduled to open in three phases. It will include
a boardroom fit to seat between 25 and 30
people for corporate events and a 150-person

banquet room for receptions.

The center is already booking events for
the holiday season, and the yet-to-be-named
bistro is scheduled to follow in the second
quarter of 2017.
The building is perfect, though its never
been a restaurant, Lisa explained. We have
to do all the infrastructure in it the kitchen,
the storage, delivering of our off-site catering.
The Peters told the Press Tribune they have
been interested in a downtown Roseville location for roughly one year.
We kind of want to bring a little of Downtown Sacramento to Downtown Roseville, said
Randy, vice president of the company. What
were going to bring to the community is being
able to come to the property after doing yoga
in the morning and say, Lets go over to the
bistro, then they decide at two o clock to have
a glass of wine and all off the sudden they say,
Ive got to cook dinner, and step into the deli
section, he explained. Well have stuffed pork
chops and meatloaf, ribs, stuff they can order
for four people.

Its more rewarding, its more emotional. Theres more at stake,
it seems, from an emotional standpoint, he said. Most people
are good people having the worst emotions. For many, its their
first time dealing with an attorney.
Miller said that was why they got referrals. At best, they hope to
be good coaches through the emotional turmoil of it all. Clients
usually are trying to see their kids, too.
Were trained divorce mediators also, which is 40 hours of
intense therapy-like training, he said.
He added that not all divorce attorneys are mediators. Mediation
is a cheaper, easier process than going to court, and they always
offer that solution first.
If an attorney is not a mediator, they are going to litigate, he
said. We always encourage it, even if not with us.

In August of 2015, beer connoisseur Brent

Welburn was betting his new business in Rocklin that enthusiasts like him would just as soon
have their favorites in one place.
Following a few trial days with friends and
family, Welburn opened Craft Beer Vault in a
tucked-away corner outlet at Rocklins 6508 Lonetree Boulevard. Its difficult to spot from the
main road, but the establishment has a clean,
open seating area within and a gated patio
next to the fountains outside. Welburn thought
it was a simple setting for a simple conceit,
his own little distribution outlet for the regions
burgeoning beer culture.
Welburn said his 12 taps serve beers from
six local craft breweries and another six from
wider regional ones not Sierra Nevada,
which customers could get anywhere, but the
varieties they might otherwise have to drive
across city or county lines to find. He intends to
expand this selection to 20 at some point, and
he serves another 25 varieties in bottles.
Welburns selections came from visiting
regional breweries and sampling them all, then
making deals with brewers so he could serve
his favorites at Craft Beer Vault.
He said an interest in craft brews took root
in his youth, having bartended his way through
college at a nightclub in San Jose, then bloomed
when he moved to England with his wife.
We experienced all the beers over there. With
Belgian purity laws and everything, they take
beer very, very seriously, he said.

When he moved back to the states, Welburn

guessed that the English model of neighborhood pubs wouldnt work in a community like
Rocklin, but a well-placed taproom might. He
started looking for a location about a year ago,
mainly in Roseville and Rocklin, and chose
the outlet on Lonetree Boulevard for several
reasons: its proximity to his home in Lincoln,
Rocklins demographic, and most of all its
surroundings a growing neighborhood and
commercial center with housing developments
nearby and no other bars or taprooms within
walking distance.
Welburn said he wanted not necessarily a
pub feel, or a bar that serves everything, but
a local watering hole to which people would
walk across the street or parking lot after work
for a pint of their favorite local brew.
People who frequent the Lonetree shopping
center can bring their own food from local
restaurants if they want, Welburn said, and
otherwise rendezvous at Craft Beer Vault for
drinks and a social hour.
All the restaurants close at nine or ten
oclock. If (people) get out of the movies at
9:30, they want to go have a drink and relax,
there was nowhere to go, he said. Now all the
workers can come here after and have a drink
when theyre done with their shifts. Im staying
open later than most nearby businesses.

Rocklin Heating and Air.
Eric and his wife, Pam, were both reared in
Nebraska, but didnt meet until years later in
Rocklin.
Now the Nebraskans live in Rocklin and
operate the Best of the Best heating and air firm
in the Rocklin area.
Erik founded the company in 2011 after
running a large commercial heating and air
conditioning firm that took him away from home
for long periods.
I wanted to stop traveling so much. And I
wanted something smaller, more personal, and
more community-based, he said.
The effort started in the Monnniers garage but
soon outgrew that space, so a building was purchased and the firm kept on growing. Pam came

After growing up close to the Rocklin Area, Beach Hut Deli

owner, Nick Mussetter, expresses his ongoing appreciation for the
Rocklin community. Winning Best Deli was just the cherry on top
for working so diligently to grow his business.
Mussetter decided to take over his first Rocklin location in
December 2007 and after much determination and patience; he is
planning on opening his third location within the next few months.
As a business owner, Mussetter has learned a lot over his many
years as owner. He even admits he was a little more nave during
his early years of ownership, however, now his Beach Hut Deli
restaurants are ranked within the top 15 out of the 40 stores.
Its really nice to work for a franchise like this, Mussetter said.
Just like in the TV show Cheers, everybody knows your name
when you walk into Beach Hut Deli in Rocklin.
We keep track of our customers, Mussetter stated.
The atmosphere is fun, welcoming, and comfortable. Mussetter has taken the time to add the little details that places him
over the top. Things like a fish tank, video games, pin ball and
a consistent happy hour. One dollar beers are offered every day

There is a proverb of unknown origin that says,

the body heals with play, the mind heals with
laughter and the spirit heals with joy. These
words on the cover of a photo album at Daycation for Seniors in Rocklin describe perfectly
what goes on there every day, five days a week,
providing seniors a safe, stimulating place to
spend their days.
At one-third the cost of in-home care, Daycation for Seniors in Rocklin is a weekday drop-in
facility for seniors experiencing a decrease in
their social, physical and mental functioning
such as dementia and Alzheimers. Their mission
is to provide a safe, stimulating environment
for loved ones, while giving the caregiver much
needed respite time for themselves.
The center is family-owned by Paul Kelly
and Yvonne Mitchell. It is staffed by trained
employees and volunteers who provide a range
of activities to keep seniors engaged throughout

the day. Some participants stay up to eight hours

to enable their caregiver to work. Some come in
for the music, crafts and lunch, while others join
the group just for lunch whatever meets the
needs of the family.
From 30 years of combined experience working
in senior care, Kelly and Mitchell saw there was a
missing link in traditional programs. While they
were able to take care of immediate personal
and various other needs, there was no place for
spouses and other caregivers to take their loved
one for social stimulation and to help improve
their physical and cognitive abilities. Daycation
allows a caregiver to hold an outside job or to
just get a few hours of time for themselves.
The large, bright day room surrounded by

photos, artwork of all kinds, plants and flowers,

and cabinets filled with their own creations is
the perfect place to spend a large part of the
day. There are also quiet sitting rooms, and a
game area to help with physical coordination
and strengthening.
The interactive music program is run by
Katherine Goudie, a certified music practitioner.
Her Music for Healing & Transition program
uses the seniors choice of music along with
props such as instruments, scarves and other
accessories to help stimulate past memories
and associations. Music helps bring a group
from just sitting and listening to laughing and

dancing within minutes.

Since each participant has their own story, experiences with music, art classes, crafts, movies
and even pet therapy help to reconnect the part
of the brain that brings out self-expression. Besides enjoying their memories, participants find
they enjoy learning new things and take pride in
their work, sharing items they have created at
home with their families.
They also enjoy comedy, hearing and discussing current events, Bingo, board games, crafts,
hobbies, traveling around the world via the magic of technology, exercising, and even putting on
the putting green.

Dr. Scott Gittins, the Best of the Best optometrist for 2016, is
part of a cutting-edge practice that embraces both compassion
and technology.
Gittins was graduated from the Southern California College of
Optometry in 1991 and moved to the Rocklin area to join Eyecenter
Optometric. He and his wife Suzanne and their six children live in
the Lincoln area.
Eyecenter doctors frequently do medical missions overseas, and
Gittins has been to Nicaragua twice. It is one of the most gratifying aspects of his practice.
In Nicaragua, an older woman asked me in Spanish if I had
any bifocals. Unfortunately, I did not, but I gave her a set of
glasses for close reading and one for distance. She looked disappointed and walked away. She had her heart set on bifocals. But
15 minutes later, she came back, beaming, and gave me a big
sloppy hug, and said I had in fact given her what she needed, he
recalled.
Gittins has a special interest in helping people with Presbyopia,
which makes it hard to focus close-up (think reading restaurant
menus) and generally affects people in their 40s.

The story of Anatolian Table started 20 years ago in London,

when Erol Hazar met his future wife, Tugce, while working at a
restaurant. Both Erol and Tugce were raised in Turkey, and Tugce
had just graduated from a four-year culinary institute in her
homeland. Tugce had formal training in cuisine, but her main
passion for cooking remained forever linked to timeless Turkish
recipes passed down from the women in her family.
In 2004, the Hazars made their first visit to the United States,
eagerly touring the Sacramento region and the Bay Area. They
soon had a dream of bringing a Turkish touch to the area through
Tugces family cooking legacy. After ten more scouting trips from
London, they settled on opening a restaurant location at the Blue
Oaks Marketplace.
Walking into Anatolian Table, customers are met with an array
of Old World ornaments that hint to the bazaars of Istanbul. The
dining rooms rich red walls are accented by oriental carpets,
eastern ceramics and oil paintings of Turkish landscapes. Glass
mosaic lamps with jeweled hues dangle over the tables. The
far side of the room is highlighted by a deep, sea blue corner of
exotic plates.

Dr. Kasi Franck is a popular local dentist that

has lived in Rocklin for 12 years and Whitney

Rocklin. Run Rocklin is a great local event that
is very family friendly. My husband and I have
been running for several years. Now that our boys
are older they enjoy the kids run and winning
a ribbon, shared Dr. Franck. Dr. Franck and her
husband, Hans, have a four-year-old son, Rhett
and a two-year-old son, Holden.
Over the years Dr. Franck has created lasting
relationships with her patients. She was approached by a long-standing patient to consider

at Whitney High School. When I graduated from
Yosemite High School I received scholarships
from local businesses and community organizations. I have always wanted to help others by

Rocklin Academy continues to strive for innovation in its classroom, a point that was recently
punctuated by the accomplishments of its high
school students Jennifer Wehir and Henry Low.
Wehir, an incoming senior at the school, was
recently accepted into Coastal Marine Biolabs
highly competitive summer neurolab program.
Only 30 of the top performing science students
in the 11th and 12th grades across the entire
nation are selected for the honor every year. The
selectiveness is due to the extremely rigorous
nature of the interdisciplinary program, which is
funded by the National Institutes of Health.
The neruolab program provides a rare opportunity for high school students to experience
how science unfolds in a real-world biomedical
research setting, Rocklin Academy representative Nichole Aldredge said about Wehirs
accomplishment in a statement, adding that

heading into the future is slow and steady

Christie added that there are still a lot of things
they love about owning a business in South
Placer County.
Its the people, she reflected. Most folks
here have a great attitude towards life. I love
working with good people and helping to brighten up their lives if even a small way. Nothing
like a freshly painted house or a newly renovated
kitchen to put a smile on your face.
