Intern Interview Questions

Focus on Intern: Dan Widmoyer

Dan is working as an intern this summer in AARs Corporate Finance Department. While submitting
applications and interviewing at various other corporations for his summer internship, he was
immediately drawn to AAR the moment he walked through the doors at its World Headquarters here in
Wood Dale. From the Silicon Valley office feel, to the friendly managers and opportunities ahead of him
he knew this is where he wanted to put his education to use.
He currently reports to Eric Pachapa, Vice President and Chief Accounting Officer for AAR. While
working in the finance department, he was able to participate in his first year-end close. He has also
works closely with the Internal Audit and Tax teams so that he can get a complete glimpse of the
corporate finance structure.

1.

What projects have you been working this summer as an intern?

So far Ive helped out in Internal Audit, Tax, and Financial Planning & Analysis. For FP&A, I created a
spreadsheet that analyzes a month-long sample of all the temp labor and includes pivot tables to slice
the data in different ways and can be used to determine if it is cost effective to use temp labor or hire
full time. Ive rolled over various financial statements for the new fiscal year and assisted in the year end
close of financial statements while analyzing data. I helped perform year end tests and reconciliations on
various accounts for Internal Audit. I just started with Tax and am in the process of filing a 5500 for the
company. Other than those major projects, Ive spent my time doing many things to assist each
departments needs.

2. Whats your favorite part of working at AAR?

The exceptionally friendly work environment and how much AAR values their employees. As a matter of
fact, his favorite core value is: WORK AS ONE. BE INCLUSIVE. He has found this to be true in his day-today workings. You really feel part of team here and everyone genuinely wants to see you be
successful. Tim Lynn has become somewhat of a mentor to Dan. Within the first two weeks of working
at AAR, Tim worked closely with him to further explain the business world in general as well as help him
with his continued growth in Finance. Tim is no stranger to being a mentor. He was one of several
employees at AAR that mentored Perspectives Charter School students last fall over a 6 week program.

3. What have you learned in your time here?

I feel I have learned so much because of the role I am in and feel this type of hands-on internship is
hard to find. Specifically, I have learned about Audit and Tax which were two fields that I knew very
little about before this internship. Ive also learned a lot about communication within a corporation. Its
important to communicate clearly with your co-workers and hes learned the importance during his first
few weeks completing his first financial analysis. I think that learning about communication is very
important and will be useful as I continue my career. He believes the value of good communications,
both internally and externally and how in doing so, allows AAR to thrive in the competitive aerospace
industry.

4. What would you like to be doing 5 years from now?

I would like to have my Masters and be working for a large corporation as a Financial Analyst or other
position in the Finance department, hopefully in Chicago.
