STANDARD for
SOUND RATING
OF NON-DUCTED
INDOOR AIRCONDITIONING
EQUIPMENT
Standard 350
4301 NORTH FAIRFAX DRIVE
IMPORTANT
SAFETY RECOMMENDATIONS
It is strongly recommended that the product be designed, constructed, assembled and installed in accordance with
nationally recognized safety requirements appropriate for products covered by this standard.
ARI, as a manufacturers trade association, uses its best efforts to develop standards employing state-of-the-art and
accepted industry practices. However, ARI does not certify or guarantee safety of any products, components or
systems designed, tested, rated, installed or operated in accordance with these standards or that any tests conducted
under its standards will be non-hazardous or free from risk.
Note:
This standard supersedes ARI Standard 350-86
Note:
This version of the standard differs from the 1986 version of the standard in the following:
a.
The single number Sound Rating (SRARI) in bels has been replaced by a Sound Rating comprised of a set of Sound
Power Levels expressed in decibels (dB). The set of Sound Power Levels include Octave Band Sound Power Levels
(LW(n)), an A-Weighted Sound Power Level (LWA), and a Tone Adjusted A-Weighted Sound Power Level (LWAT). The
Sound Power Levels used for the Sound Rating are all determined from the same One-Third Octave Band Sound
pressure measurements that are required in the 1986 version of the standard.
b.
The Reference Sound Source used in the sound test is calibrated in accordance with ARI Standard 250.
c.
ARI Standard 280 has been incorporated for obtaining optional sound data below 100 Hz.

1.1.1
Intent. This standard is intended for the
guidance of the industry, including manufacturers,
engineers, installers, contractors and users.
3.4.1
Application Rating. A rating based on tests
performed at Application Rating Conditions (other
than Standard Rating Conditions).
1.1.2
Review and Amendment. This standard is
subject to review and amendment as technology
advances.
3.4.2
Standard Rating. A rating based on tests
performed at Standard Rating Conditions.
Section 2. Scope
2.1 Scope. This standard applies to the indoor portions of
factory-made non-ducted air-conditioning equipment as
defined in ARI Standards 210/240, 340/360, 310/380 and
440.
Section 3. Definitions
Definitions. All terms in this document shall follow the
standard industry definitions in the current edition of
ASHRAE Terminology of Heating, Ventilation, AirConditioning and Refrigeration, unless otherwise defined in
this section.
3.1 A-Weighting. A frequency weighting applied to OneThird Octave Band data in accordance with the provisions of
ANSI Standard S1.4A Amendment to ANSI S1.4.
4.2
4.2.2
Position B (Figure 1) mounted against or
through the wall but bottom of equipment on the floor.
The equipment shall be mounted at the minimum
manufacturers recommended projection into the room.
4.2.3
Position C (Figure 1) mounted against or
through the wall but bottom of equipment is not on the
floor. The equipment shall be mounted at the
minimum manufacturers recommended projection into
the room.
4.2.4
Position D (Figure 1) ceiling mounted
equipment may be suspended from the sound room
ceiling or from a frame device or mounted on rails
supported by concrete blocks.
4.2.5
All equipment shall be mounted according to
the manufacturers installation instructions. If any
deviations from these instructions are necessary, they
must be done in a manner that will not affect the
acoustic performance of the equipment.
4.1.1
Sound Power Levels shall be determined in
decibels re 1 pW for the One-Third Octave Bands with
center frequencies from 100 to 10,000 Hz.
Throughout this frequency range, the test facility shall
have been qualified for pure tone response in
accordance with ANSI Standard S12.32 using
frequency rather than noise source position as the
independent variable.
4.1.1.1
Sound power in the optional 50,
63, and 80 Hz One-Third Octave Bands are
determined in accordance with ARI Standard
280.
4.1.2
Data to be Recorded. One-Third Octave
Band sound power data shall be determined and
recorded for the frequency bands from 100 to 10,000
Hz in accordance with the standard used to conduct
the test. Optional data in the frequency bands from 50
to 80 Hz may also be included.
A record shall be made of the actual equipment rating
thermal operating conditions under which the
equipment was tested. In addition, the equipment air
volume, cfm [m3/s] and external static pressure, in
H2O [kPa] shall be noted.

4.2.7
Room fan coil air-conditioners designed for
furred-in application or for application with minimal
duct work shall be installed in accordance with
Position A, B or D (see Figure 1) and operated at freedelivery conditions without enclosures or ductwork.
5.2.1
General. These values are to be determined
for each of the Octave Bands from 125 to 8000 Hz.
Optionally, the 63 Hz Octave Band may also be
included. The Octave Band sound power data shall be
determined from the unweighted, non-tone adjusted,
One Third-Octave Band sound power data (LW1/3(n)),
obtained from the tests described in Section 4. The
Octave Bands are calculated from the three One-Third
Octave Bands by using Equation 1:

specified on the unit nameplate, and measured at the
unit service connection.

and outdoor fans (if any) shall be the same as required
to produce the rated capacity under the appropriate
ARI Standard.

Conversion to Tone Adjusted A-Weighted
Sound Power Levels. The equipment One-Third
Octave Band Sound Power Levels, including the
adjustments as required in 5.4.2, shall be converted to
A-Weighted One-Third Octave Sound Power Levels
by applying adjustments from Table 1.
5.4.4 Calculation of Tone Adjusted A-Weighted
Sound Power Level. The Tone Adjusted A-Weighted
Sound Power Level for the specified conditions shall
be determined from the Tone Adjusted A-Weighted
One-Third Octave Sound Power Levels obtained in
5.4.2 and 5.4.3 by using Equation 4 and by rounding
off to nearest decibel.
