Cooking up sweet appreciation for local police

Kate Steinberg has been baking goods to deliver to the Moorestown Police Department for years
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
Kate Steinberg has been interested in cooking and baking for as
long as she can remember, and
today uses her gift to give to others. Since age 6, the now 23-yearold has been delivering baked
goods to the local police department as a token of her appreciation.
Having baked everything from
brownies to cookies to too much
chocolate cupcakes with a cream
cheese frosting, Steinberg has always remained inspired by her
mother who taught her to always
live by the Golden Rule. In treating others how she would in turn
wish to be treated, Steinberg admits she would rather live her life
being too kind than by being cold
in an effort to protect herself.
Small gestures can often
mean more than the bigger gestures, because they're less expected and take less time. You can be
working a full-time job, raising
five children, and still find time to
even just call the police and thank
them for all that they do for our
communities, Steinberg said.
This world has become so cold at
times, and we need every kind
gesture.
In return for her kindness, the
Moorestown police often respond

LINDSEY NOLEN/The Sun

with a nice thank you followed
by a when can you bring more?

Never expecting anything in return, Steinberg continues to

bring her baked goods back to the

department with the understand-

ing that no kind gesture is too

small or goes unnoticed.
Theres been a good outpouring of support for the police over
the past couple months in addition to Miss Steinberg. We definitely appreciate her support during these troubled times, Lee
Lieber, Moorestown chief of police, said.
Although she does not have
any personal ties to the police department, it has made Steinberg
feel safe in many uncomfortable
situations. In addition, with
shootings by police officers circulating in the news, Steinberg
wants to make sure the police officers of Moorestown, who have
been there for her know their
service is still appreciated.
I tend to use analogies to help
people understand situations.
When you're out getting lunch
with your parents and you see another family with not-so-nice parents, yelling at their children and
maybe being a bit too rough, you
can better appreciate your parents, Steinberg said. I've seen
some of the videos of police brutality, and it makes me so immensely grateful that our police
department is not like that.

further promote her
love of reading to underprivileged youth.
My event is called
Bookitcon because
it's a book convention. You can think
of it like Comic Con,

except it's all about books and on

a much smaller scale, Horvitz
said.
The event, being held on Sunday, Aug. 7 from 3:30 p.m. until 6

Conventions are over; now we enter the final stretch

last week, one week after the
Republican National Convention
ended in Cleveland, Ohio.
Now, the two divisive candidates
Hillary Clinton for the Democrats and
Donald Trump for the Republicans
head toward the final stretch in the
race to be our next president.
The general election will be held on
Tuesday, Nov. 8, a little more than three
months from now. And in those three
months, not only are we, the American
public, about to be educated about each
candidates positions and why we
should elect him or her, but were also
about to be bombarded even more
than we already have been with ugly,
political rhetoric through advertising.

This is going to be an ugly few
months.
For those of us who are more interested in the issues, or who at least hope
the issues will come to the forefront of
the campaigns, presidential debates
will be held on Monday, Sept. 26 at Hofstra University in New York; Sunday,
Oct. 9 at Washington University in St.
Louis; and Wednesday, Oct. 19 at the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
The vice presidential debate will be
held on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Longwood

University in Farmwood, Va.

Whomever you like more whether
it be Clinton, Trump or another candidate such as Libertarian Gary Johnson make sure that you cross off Nov.

Voting is one of the most sacred of
rights we have as Americans, so if
youre eligible to vote, you should head
to the polls without reservations. You
only have one chance every four years
to help choose who the leader of our
country will be. Decide to stay on the
sidelines, and youll have passed on the
opportunity to participate in U.S. politics. Nowadays, as politicians have
seemed to become more separated
from their constituents, voting is the
one last way we can exercise our right
to participate.

Council considers spatterdock removal at lake

The rooted, floating-leaved plant has become invasive at Strawbridge Lake
By LINDSEY NOLEN
The Sun
Strawbridge Lake is just one of the
many natural landscapes that highlight
Moorestowns beauty. However, over the
years, an accumulation of spatterdock has
led Moorestown Township Council to consider ways to remove the plant from the
32.9-acre lake.
A rooted, floating-leaved plant popular
in the northeastern U.S., spatterdock appears in early spring but remains below
the lakes surface and resembles lettuce.
Yet, by late spring, the dark green, heartshaped leaves make their way to the surface and can even stand above the water.
Although there are no apparent health
concerns for people, animals or to the lake

itself related to spatterdock, the plant is invasive, difficult to control and maintain
and takes away from the appearance of
Strawbridge Lake. As a result, a bid was
opened on July 22 that suggested ways for
the township to successfully remove the
plant.
Its invasive and inhabits a lot of lakes
in Burlington County and New Jersey
overall, totally covering the tops of the
lakes and shading the bottom so that nothing else can grow. It also clogs up a lot of
waterways, Chet Dawson, chair of the Environmental Advisory Committee, said.
In 2015, council authorized $80,000 from
the Moorestown Open Space Recreation,
Farmland and Historic Preservation Trust
Fund to be used for environmental improvements at Strawbridge Lake. However,

these improvements were only made to a

small portion of the lake.
Last year, we did this on an hourly
basis, and it didnt get us very far. The bid
that we went out for is to complete the entire lake; this came in for Princeton
Hydro, Township Manager Scott Carew
said. The base bid included $30,000 to complete the upper section, $13,500 for the middle section, $21,000 for the lower section
and removal of spatterdock from the shore
at $20,500, for a total of $85,000 to remove all
of the spatterdock from the lake.
For the necessary funds to be allocated
to the project, council would have to pass a
resolution to again utilize the towns Open
Space Trust Fund.

The summer of 2016 has been a

series of firsts for the Department of Parks & Recreation. The
Summer Parks Program has
boasted the largest number of
campers to date and the largest
number of specialty camps and
clinics offered in its half-century
history. Among the weeklong
camps and clinics are the new
culinary and baking camps that
have been offered for youth. Due
to the overwhelming demand, one
final culinary camp has been
added to the schedule, and the fall
schedule is already growing.
Included in the summer camps
were bread baking, cookies and
cakes and the final program, Kid

Chef ! The bread baking course offered by long-time baker Diane

MacFeeters filled as soon as registration opened. Children learned
the basics of bread baking, including yeast and quick breads.
The Kid Chef class was designed
to help adolescent students learn
culinary practices and fundamentals that they could build upon.
From breakfast foods to kid
friendly meals, Chef Katie
Sklarow, led the group of junior
foodies through fun and easy
recipes. Bringing basic culinary
skills back to youth and families
is the goal of the Recreation
Cooking Programs. Providing
fundamentals in a fun and accessible environment is how they do
it.
The final cooking camp for

Sheriffs Department
collects school supplies
for children in need
Burlington County Sheriff
Jean Stanfield is asking for public
assistance in collecting school
supplies for Burlington County
children in need.
A childs ability to succeed in
school should not be deterred by a
lack of necessary resources. We
are asking our communities to
extend their generosity so that we
can ensure that all children in
Burlington County return to
school with the materials they
require, Stanfield stated.
The Sheriff s Department will
be coordinating with the Burlington County Library, the Tabernacle Baptist Church and other
local organizations to collect and
distribute items such as back-

packs, three-ring binders, notebooks, writing utensils and much

more.
I think our county works best
and benefits the most when we all
come together to support and
care for one another, Stanfield
continued. When our residents
donate school supplies, they are
not only offering immediate help,
but are also providing those students with the opportunity to advance their education.
The donation drive will run
through Aug. 10 with collection
boxes in county buildings, at the
Burlington County Library Main
Branch and at the Burlington
County
Library
Evesham
Branch.

Removing plant
is time-sensitive
REMOVING
Continued from page 6

Although all councilmembers

agreed the removal of spatterdock would be beneficial, Deputy
Mayor Victoria Napolitano questioned the use of the open space
trust fund. She said she did not
want this fund to become the
cookie jar the township digs
into each time it needs project
funding.
Despite the time needed for
council to determine whether it
can justly use of these funds, removing the plant is a time-sensitive issue. Once the temperature
drops for the year, it will become
increasingly difficult to see and
therefore remove.
The removal of spatterdock

must be done before the weather

turns to freezing. To remove it,
workers go in with essentially a
floating backhoe and dig it out by
the roots, putting the whole plant
up, Dawson said. The roots are
about four inches in diameter and
create a maze throughout the bottom of the lake.
Dawson believes it will take six
to eight weeks for the process to
be completed, providing further
reason for council to either push
the bid forward or put it off another year. Even with immediate
attention, the township will be
forced to work around the schedules of the companies that provide this service, as there are few.
Additionally, this project will remain ongoing, as a maintenance
program would need to be established, and there is a small
chance 100 percent of the spatterdock will ever be removed.

volved, Horvitz said. Donna

said the same thing happened
with her when she heard about
Bookitcon and UBUbiz.
Growing up an avid reader and
lover of the library, when Horvitz
learned there were schools within an hours drive from
Moorestown with virtually no library, she knew something had to
be done. With a desire to increase
the normalcy of reading during
childhood, she put together her
first event to allow her to raise
money to help the schools with libraries that have no books the
reason she founded UBUbiz.
After Horvitz took her first
business class in ninth grade, she
knew she wanted to pursue a career in business and ultimately to
become an entrepreneur. One day,
she started thinking about how
she could combine her three
loves books, business and community service giving her the
idea for Bookitcon. She held her
first Bookitcon on Aug. 9, 2015
also at the Moorestown Commu-

nity House.
Ever since I was young, reading has been a huge part of my
life. No matter where I went, I
brought one or two books with
me. Reading truly shaped my
childhood, and it both horrifies
and saddens me that other kids
might not have the same opportunity to read books as I did,
Horvitz said.
UBUbiz is selling tickets and accepting donations for Bookitcon at
https://ububiz.com/. Those unable to attend the event are still encouraged to view the online book
sales on the companys website.
After her second charity book
event concludes, Horvitz will
begin preparing to enter her
freshman year at Babson College
in Wellesley, Mass. There, she
plans to take advantage of all the
business opportunities available
to students and grow a bigger network. Eventually, she hopes to be
able to start a new business that
will continue to make an impact
on the world.
