Introduction
Packet Tracer is an interactive network simulation to create network, configure
device and simulate network with visual representative. As a network simulation
environment, Packet Tracer provides simulated router, switch, server, workstation and
networking protocol resources to create diverse and complex networking scenarios and
practical experience. Packet tracer is learned to design a simple local area network with
specific IP addressing configuration and assign IP address to the nodes.
IP is an address of a computer or other network device on a network using IP or
TCP/IP. The address is to help the data reach its appropriate destination on a network.
Some devices are going to be used in the sketching of the network such as routers,
switches, hubs and hosts. This topology represents a small WAN. Devices in the topology
have been configured but not tested for end to end connectivity. Each device should be
allowed to communicate with all other devices.
Testing of the connectivity of the network also been tested by sending message
from node in LAN 1 to a node in LAN 2. Each PC should be configured with a network
gateway. In the network depicted, this gateway should be the IP address of the LAN port
of the router to which the PC is attached. To test connectivity from a PC to its configured
gateway, simple PDU feature is used to ping from the PC to its gateway.

Objectives
(i)

To design and simulate network by using Packet Tracer.

(ii)

To learn to configure and verify network connectivity

(iii)

Apply IP address to the routers and workstation in the simulation.

(iv)

Test and troubleshoot end to end connectivity between devices in a partially

configured network.

Discussion

In the network in results session, there a 3 LAN total. Each of the LAN is form by
2 PC hosts, a switch, and a router.

The default gateway of the hosts of the first LAN is the IP address for the first router. The
hosts, switch and the router in each LAN is connected by straight through copper wire.
Meanwhile, all the 3 router are connected by the serial DCE. We are using TCP to
transfer the message between PC. When a message is sent from A to B, the message will
go through all the items in between 1 by 1 until arrives at the destination and loopback to
the client.
For all 3 router we install 2 WIC-1T each. The WIC-1T provides a single port
serial connection to remote sites or legacy serial network devices such as Synchronous
Data Link Control (SDLC) concentrators, alarm systems, and packet over SONET (POS)
devices. The special about router is that we need to turn off the router first before we can
install any modules. After install the modules, the router have to turn on again. If we do
not done the step, the router will not working.

Conclusion

From this assignment, we learnt how to design a simple local area network with
specific IP addressing configuration using the software Packet Tracer which we get
from Cisco Network Academy website. The purpose for us to learn how to design a
network is because different network could be design based on the following factors:
geographical area, specific purposes or based on ownership. Different factor require a
different design of network. By learning how to design a network, we could design the
network that satisfies the client and ownership.
Other than that, We also learnt how to assign the IP addresses to the given nodes
respectively as of any specification or requirement after learning about sub-netting.
Furthermore, we also get to learn that there are few items that needed to illustrate the
network. Firstly is the router, the purpose of router is to specify the IP addresses for a
working network. Secondly is the network switches, the purpose of the switches is to
display the best practices during hierarchical connection. Thirdly is commonly known as
hubs, hub in another term also known as repeater. Hubs is used to connect a few host
without understanding and bother to know what are the data it transferring. Last but not
least is the Hosts(PCs), hosts are usually known as the end user devices where it is
assigned with specified IP addresses.
After doing this assignment, we get to understand more about networking and
sub-netting for example how to design how sub-net, how to identify the sub-net bit etc.
And this helps in our studies for data communication and networking. We are also able to
learn the basic skills in using Packet Tracer in designing virtual network.
