Reminders from last term

parents of year 8 students are asked to keep us informed please of any change in intended secondary
school. This is so that we can do our best to get you the information you need and so that we can of
maximum assistance with class placements.

Girls - parents welcome. WGHS Open Evening from 5.30pm (same day)
Kamo High School Open Evening on Tuesday 9th August from 5.30pm
Year 7 and 8 Technology Classes
Parents of year 7 and 8 children are reminded that technology classes (formerly woodwork, cooking and soft
materials) started for our seniors this Friday, and will take place every Friday until the end of the year.
This ensures that our pupils receive an equivalent (or greater) specialist teaching component in these
subjects than year 7 and 8 children at other schools. Parents will receive a more detailed letter shortly, but
we especially draw your attention to the following
children will be offsite at the Hukerenui Technology Centre for the duration of Friday
they will need to have footwear and clothing suitable for a workshop context
children will also need to take their lunch and drink bottle with them to the Tech Centre
Homework
Please do your best to ensure that children complete their homework on designated afternoons, or drop a
quick note or email to their teacher if things are getting a bit hectic at home. Most of all we do not want to
be chasing homework from children whose circumstances make homework too big an ask for them. While
we think that there is benefit from doing homework, we are more than happy to excuse students from
homework at a parents request.
International Schools Competitions
Further practice papers for both the English and the Maths exams were issued this week. It is the
responsibility of parents to ensure that children sit at least 2 practice papers a week at home please
(parents will also need to mark these marking sheet provided). A reminder that the exams are scheduled
as follows English 2 August & Mathematics 16 August. As the English exam is next Tuesday we suggest
just one more practice and then a slight break before test day.
Headlice Inspections
Please give Helen a call next week if you are in a position to help with term headlice inspections. These are
critical if we are to keep on top of this problem and so please put your hand up if you can help.

the office no later than Wednesday 10th August.

Attending Matarau School in 2017?
At the end of last term we advised that we would be seeking an indication of which children may not be at
Matarau School in 2017. As the roll passes the 300 mark this year, the board wishes to give careful thought
to how we manage roll growth moving forward. We want to be fair on existing families, as well as on those
who are seeking entry from outside our zone. So if you are certain (or reasonably certain) that your
child(ren) will NOT be at Matarau School next year could you please phone (or email) Helen on Monday.

This request is not intended for those who are unsure, or whose circumstances are fluid, you need time and
space to make decisions in your own time. This is for those who know for certain. So ... if your
child(ren) will DEFINITELY NOT be with us next year please pick up the phone on Monday and let us
know or leave a voice message over the weekend.
Finally
You will likely know that our senior students (Year 7 and 8) have an options programme on a Tuesday
afternoon where students are given opportunities to be challenged, to develop new ways of thinking, to
experience secondary school subjects, and even to even scope possible careers. This week one of our science
option groups extracted DNA from strawberries. How cool is that!
