Reading (Title and Author): Being in Place by Lucy Lippord and Place: A Short Introduction by
Tim Creswell
Summary (At least one Paragraph per reading): Being in Place- In this reading we were able to gather the
social impact from place. The author also covers how culture barrows upon itself creating ones outlook of
culture subconsciously. I find she even brings up the question whether regional art is more influential or is
international art? One my sense or feel a place differently than another person therefore leaving the outlook
of a place different. Lucy Lippord takes us out of the tangible place and gets us thinking about the intrinsic
place of our own creation.
Place: A Short Introduction- The author brings us not into the thought of place, but more into the idea that
people are the creators of place. A place captures each individuals characteristics, culture, or traditions,
giving place a certain feel. Like cultures and our environment change is inevitable, he gives examples in a
few stories how a person once removed from a place can become a complete stranger upon their return.
Giving place an organic quality derived from human beings. He most importantly points out that the
human landscape which makes up a place is not the same as the geographical landscape anyone can
observe.

List of primary claim for each reading: Being in Place- Claims that art is unique and different from each
region or area its derived from. The author also states how each place tell the history of the people that
once lived there.
Place: A Short Introduction Tims writing takes the term place and opens up to new ideas of what
place means. He Claims that space becomes a place through human interaction and human culture, thus
redefining place. Not only does she bring up the term place in a physical sense she makes us think in terms
of sense of belonging or familiarity. One my sense or feel a place differently than another person therefore
leaving the outlook of a place different.

Key quote (no more than a sentence or twowith page reference): For now it suffices to say that the
majority of writing about place focuses on the realm of meaning and the way we experience the world.
Place: A Short Introduction by Tim Creswell (p.12)

Why I chose this quote (2-3 sentences): The quote points out how people experience the world, and through
their own experiences interpret place. It also brings into question the cultural importance of place, is it the
landscape that formulated place or the culture that resides in an area define a place? Is place even open up for
interpretation? I believe the people of the space unconsciously guide the change of space making it unique

and their own.

Questions that I want to explore:

Does that space in time you recall in youth remain the same in a particular place or is it ever
changing and only unique to you?

Does changing culture begin the change of a changing place?

Once removed from a space you have lived in, how long before that space becomes unfamiliar
with you, culturally?
