Russian Gold

To clarify, she needs both reserves in the ground i.e. mines, etc and in the banks. Kevin
has already gotten some info on the first 2 tasks, so start with the mine locations and take
it from there.
I need a breakdown of the Russian gold sector
Can I get this by Friday COB?
o
o

Amount of Reserves (and global ranking)

Amount of Production (& global ranking)
(before fall of SU, during the 1990s, over the past few years)
o
Where are the mines? (regionally)
o
Which steel companies work in the same region as the mines?
o
Major companies & who owns them
(there are literally hundreds of Russian gold companies, so if we can get a
ballpark # on just how many there are)
o
Do any of these companies own assets abroad (look at Africa, SEA, LA, etc)
Mines: Polyus company owns Olimpiada mine, the largest in Russia and which is located
in the Krasnoyarsk region, Kuranakh mine, which is located in Aldan Province of
Yakutsk, and Zapodnoye mine, located in the Irkutsk region.
Polyus company will launch $2.5 billion Natalka mine project. Will be completed in
2012 or 2013. Located in the Magadan region in the remote northeast. Natalka has
reserves of 40.8 million ounces at an average grade of 1.13 grams per tonne to
internationally recognised Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) standards.
Polyus company will launch Verninskoye mine project in the Siberian region of Irkutsk,
in 2010.
Peter Hambro operates the Pokrovskiy mine in the Amur Region. it is an operating open
pit gold mine with excellent infrastructure: electricity supply, roads, heating plant,
laboratory, accommodation, canteen and offices. It is equipped with a full mining fleet,
including trucks, bulldozers, shovels and drill rigs. Access to the Pokrovskiy mine is
either by air service from Blagoveschensk to Zeya (88 km from the mine) or by TransSiberian Railways from Khabarovsk (18 hours) to Tygda (10 km from the mine). The car
journey from the regional capital Blagoveschensk to the mine takes approximately 7
hours. In 2008 gold production from the Pokrovskiy mine was 267,100 oz, an increase of
13% compared to 2007 and exceeding the Groups production target for 2008 by 19%.
Peter Hambro operates Pioneer mine, located in the Amur Region, just c.35 km from
Pokrovskiy. Pioneer is c.40 km from the Tigda station on the Trans-Siberian railway and
c.60 km from the closest airport at Zeya. The licence for the Pioneer deposit was acquired
by the Group in 2001. The first phase of the plant was commissioned just six years later

in 2007. The Directors consider the commissioning of Pioneer to represent a significant

stage in the Groups expansion plans.
Omchak group operates the Berelekh mine, which seems to be a series of alluvial mines
in the Magadan region which are collectively referred to as a single operation.
Shkolnoye is located in the Magadan region and is operated by CJSC Nelkobazoloto.
Vetrenskoe is located in the Magadan Region and is operated by CJSC Susumanzoloto
since 2000.
The Dukat deposit is located in the Russian northeast, in the Omsukchan district of the
Magadan Region, 650 km from Magadan City and 40 km from the Omsukchan
Township. It is operated by Polymetals. (CJSC Magadan Silver is a Polymetals
subsidiary) Dukat is a gold mine, but it also is the third largest silver deposit globally and
the largest in Russia by ore reserves, containing 60% of Russia's total silver reserves. It
produced 31k oz of gold in 2008, and 12.5 million oz. of silver.
The Lunnoye deposit is located in the northeast of Russia, in the Omsukchan district of
the Magadan Region, 650 km from Magadan and 134 km from the Omsukchan
Township. The Lunnoye deposit is operated by CJSC Magadan Silver, a Polymetal
subsidiary. In 2008 Lunnoye produced 14k oz. of gold and 3.4 million oz. of silver.
The Khakanja deposit is located in the Okhotsk District of the Khabarovsk Territory, 92
km to the northwest of the district centre Okhotsk Town. The Khakanja deposit is
operated by OJSC Okhotsk Mining and Geological Company, a Polymetal subsidiary. In
2008 Khakanja produced 109k oz. of gold and 1.3 million oz. of silver.
The Vorontsovskoye gold deposit is located in the Krasnoturyinsk Ore District of the
Sverdlovsk region, 0.5 km to the west of the Vorontsovka Township. The Vorontsovskoye
deposit is operated by CJSC Northern Urals Gold, a Polymetal subsidiary. In 2008 it
produced 132k oz. of gold and 65 million oz. of silver.
The Arylakh deposit is located in the Russian northeast in the Srednekansk district of the
Magadan Region, 30 km to the northwest of Polymetals Lunnoye deposit. The Arylakh
deposit is being developed by CJSC Magadan Silver, a Polymetal subsidiary. Because of
its remote location, the Arylakh deposit work on a fly-in, fly-out system. The mine and
plant operate 364 days per year. Production began in 2007 and numbers are not yet
available.
The Yurievskoye deposit is located in the Okhotsk District of the Khabarovsk Territory, 90
km to the northwest of the Khakanja deposit (in the northwest of the district centre
Okhotsk Township). The Yurievskoye deposit is developed by OJSC Okhotsk Mining and
Geological Company, a Polymetal subsidiary. The Yurievskoye deposit is a satellite
deposit of Khakanja. The Khakanja processing plant processes ore from both the
Khakanja deposit and the Yurievskoye deposit.

Mnogovershinnoe is located in the Nikolaevsk area of the Khabarovsk Territory in the

far-east of the Russian Federation. The mine is located some 650 km north of the city of
Khabarovsk and is accessed from Nikolaevsk-na-Amure, the principal regional centre,
via a 132 km long gravel road. Between 1991 and the present day the mine has produced
some 700,000 oz of gold. It is operated by Highland Gold.

The deposit at Novoshirokinskoye (Novo) is in the Chita Region of Eastern Siberia.

Redeveloping this older mine is a joint venture deal between Highland Gold and Kazzinc,
involving the sale of a 48.3% interest in the development project at Novoshirokinskoye
(Novo) and was completed in December 2006. Approximately 1 million oz. of gold are
thought to exist at this site.

The Mayskoye gold deposit is located in the Chaunski District of the Chukotka
Autonomous Territory, in the far northeast of the Russian Federation. Access and supply
is via the seasonal (May to October) Arctic seaport of Pevek, which also has an airport
suitable for all types of aircraft. The deposit is linked to Pevek by road via Komsomolsky,
a small mining centre 58 km northwest of Mayskoye, a total distance of 187 km. This site
is thought to hold more than 2 million oz. of gold. On 4 September 2003, Highland Gold
announced it had reached a conditional agreement to acquire 100% of JSC Mayskoye, the
holder of a license to develop the Mayskoye deposit.

The Taseevskoye deposit is located two kilometres south of the town of Baley
(Population: 13,800) in the Chita region, Eastern Siberia. The deposit was discovered in
1941 and during the period 1948 to 1994 produced 6.4 million ounces of gold from 16.3
million tonnes of ore at an average gold grade of 12.2 g/t. This site is thought to hold
more than 2 million oz. of gold.

The Irokinda Mine is located in the Republic of Buryatia, Russia, 80 kilometres by road
from the Baikal-Amur railroad, at the north-east end of Lake Baikal. This site produced
75,224 oz. of gold in 2007. It is operated by High River Gold Mines.
The Berezitovy property is located in the Tindinski District, Amur Oblast, 900 kilometres
northwest of the Oblast capital city of Blagoveshchensk. The regional centre of Tynda,
with a population of 40,000, is approximately 340 kilometres northeast of the property
while the closest large town is Skovorodino, approximately 123 kilometres southeast by
road. The nearest population centre is Urusha (4,700 people) located 50 kilometres to the
south of the property, on the Trans Siberian railway and a major road. The Berezitovy
Deposit is gold-polymetallic, low-sulphide type mineralization with sulphide mineral
content in the range of 5 to 10%. The design mining rate is 1.5 million ore tonnes per
year. The average mine life waste to ore ratio is 5.61:1 which necessitates an overall
average daily production rate of 27,878 tonnes of material moved. The production
schedule has a maximum daily production rate of 45,000 tonnes. The 10 percent diluted
mineral reserve estimate is 13.9 million tonnes with a grade of 2.3 grams gold per tonne
and 11.4 grams silver per tonne. This site is operated by High River Gold.

boundary between the Anadyr and Bilibino Regions in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug.
The total distance between the Kupol property and Bilibinothe nearest major cityis
approximately 200 kilometres. In May 2008, Kinross (the owning company) announced
that the mill had begun processing ore and that the Kupol mine had produced its first
ounce of gold-silver dore. The site is thought to hold approximately 3,280,000 oz. of
gold.

The Omchak Joint Venture with Peter Hambro, Susumanzoloto, and Shkolnoye was
established in 2003. They contributed their interests in two operating mines, the Berelekh
mine and the Shkolnoye mine. The primary objective of the Omchak Joint Venture was to
identify, acquire and develop promising gold deposits in regions of Russia where the
Group did not have a presence at the time. Omchak operates primarily in the Magadan
Region, one of the oldest and biggest Russian gold provinces. The establishment of
Omchak enabled the Group to operate in the Region for the first time. Since its
incorporation, Omchak has acquired over 10 new assets in four different regions of
Russia which it has been actively exploring and developing. In 2007 Omchak also
