Mighty Miss Malone: Lesson 1
The Family

I.

Descriptive Data
This unit plan is being used for my 15:1 ELA special education class. I have a
total of six students in this small group setting. This group meets every day for about
thirty to forty-five minutes. This group is all about utilizing graphic organizers,
technology, and partner work. Each of the lesson plans will take anywhere from 2 days to
one week to complete.

II.

Materials, Equipment and Technology What will you need for this lesson? How will
you use technology, if applicable?
During this unit plan, students will use laptops, audiobooks, essays that they
originally wrote during a general education ELA lesson, and graphic organizers. Along
with these extra materials, students will need their Mighty Miss Malone book by
Christopher Paul Curtis, their folders, pencils, and workbooks, which are available on a
laptop for my student who is unable to write, but is able to type on a laptop. The Mighty
Miss Malone is about a girl growing up in poverty with a mother fighting for gender
equality rights.
Standards and Objectives How does the plan align with the CCSS and your learning
objectives?
a. Common Core State Standards
i. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.6.1
Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as
well as inferences drawn from the text.
ii. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.6.9
Compare and contrast texts in different forms or genres (e.g., stories and
poems; historical novels and fantasy stories) in terms of their approaches
to similar themes and topics.
b. Learning Objectives:
i. Students will be able to compare The Family and The Mighty Miss
Malone.
ii. Students will be able to show their comprehension about Dezas family by
answering short response comprehension questions.

Procedures What will you do to help the students learn?

a. The students will begin this lesson listening to the book, The Family, by Todd
Parr. The students have worked with this story before so this will be a review.
b. The students will be completing a graphic organizer describing the different types
of families describe in this book. This will allow them to compare the families in
this book to the family describe throughout The Mighty Miss Malone.

c. As a whole group, we will complete the graphic organizer together to ensure

understanding and so students are able to visually see the expectations for this
lesson.
d. I will first cold read the first chapter. Students are expected to just listen to this
chapter. I am only cold reading this chapter because there is a lot of information
for the students to take in. By letting them follow along with the book while it is
being read, they are able to enjoy the story without worrying about looking at one
piece of the chapter.
e. After reading and discussing what happened throughout the first chapter, students
will be given the task.
f. We will then begin listening to the book and evidence flagging all the characters
that are discussed in chapter 1. The book opens by discussing the entire family
that we will be following throughout the book and it is important that students are
able to comprehend all the characters that they will see.
g. I will have the book as an audio version so students are able to follow along with
the reading and I will be able to stop when a new character is discussed and give
the students time to place an evidence flag in their books and take/type notes if
necessary.
h. Students will complete each day of this lesson with an exit ticket that includes
comparing the books, and also asks them at least one comprehension question that
they have to answer using at least two sentences.

Modifications How will you adapt parts of the lesson to meet the needs of students
with disabilities, with limited English, or with other special needs?
This unit lesson is filled with modifications that are all discussed throughout the
lessons. Due to this being a 15:1 special education unit plan, I am already teaching in a
small group setting using multiple tools and pieces of technology to meet the needs of my
students.
Student Assessment How will you know the students were successful?
Students will be assessed based on their exit tickets and comprehension questions.
Initial Reaction notes on your teaching experience. What went well? What would you
change and why?
TBD once the lesson is actually taught.
