Giovanni, N. (2008). Hip Hop Speaks To Children: A Celebration Of Poetry With A Beat.
Naperville, IL: Sourcebooks Jabberwocky.
Poetry -Thematic Poetry Collection Range of African American poetic forms. It has 51
selections of 42 poets and performers and 30 performances on audio CD. It has a lot of
bright and alive colors and some dark as well that add emotion to each poem whether it is
expressing happiness or sadness. The art is abstract in some using pen and ink and water
colors. The ideas and feeling expressed are very authentic, fresh and powerful because a
lot of these poems express hopes, dreams and problems faced in urban communities and
families. It also shows the view of an adolescent having to live in that community and
how it is to have a beat in your heart to express yourself with the the things around you.
Hiaasen, C. (2003). Hoot. New York: Knopf.
Realistic fiction - Suspense and survival. Ages 10-14. Roy is wanting to find out about a
mysterious boy that he can not seem to get information about until he comes across a
tough girl that warns him to mind his business or else. I think this book has a great
message of helping people in need and of preserving and protecting animal habitats. At
first it seems to portray a story about making friends, a boy that just moved from
Montana to Florida and is being bullied but then is able build relationships. But by midstory there's a turn around and the cause is to help burrowing owls preserve their home

and protest against the construction company wanting to build a restaurant on the habitat
of the owls.

Ryan, P. M.(2010). Illus. Sis, P. The Dreamer. New York: Scholastic Press.
Nonfiction Biography - World Wars of the Twentieth Century, 1914 to 1945. Ages 9-14.
This is a beautiful story that demonstrate the harshness of society and even one's
family. This fictional biography of Pablo Neruda that talks about a boy Naftali whose
father is not to kind to him and is very strict. His father is not pleased that his son likes to
daydream and he is sure to put a stop to it. This story has a serious tone and will tug a the
heat because you want to leave the dreams with Neftali. Ryan does a great job at playing
with words and bring the pages to life with the pen illustrations. This book is not for
every young person because they may not be able to keep up with the tone of the story
but it sure will make you reflect on the harshness that many unknown children have to go
through.
