Barton Elementary Library Collection Development Plan

The Barton Elementary Library is open from 7:15 AM until 3:30 PM (M-F) and closes at 3:00
PM on Wednesday. We welcome students, teachers, staff, and families of our school, as well as
other groups within the district.
Mission Statement
Bartons Library mission statement is to develop confident, independent individuals who will
improve society through facilitating knowledge creation in their communities.
Vision Statement
The vision of Barton Library is to provide all students, staff, and families the tools needed for
promoting a positive educational environment.
Library Philosophy
The library is an extension of the classroom where learning also takes place. The library is here
for ALL subjects, not just reading and language arts. The library is open on the web with
ebooks and electronic resources all day and night. The library is a multi-use area that doesnt
belong to the librarian but it belongs to every single staff member, student, and parent.

Circulation
Every class is scheduled to visit the library every other week. Teachers are more than welcome to
schedule other days as well. This scheduled time is 30 minutes in duration.
The library circulation schedule will be shared with you on your Google Drive/Google
Spreadsheet. It will be in the format of a Google Calendar.
Do not assume that if the schedule says theres an opening, there is actually an opening. The
library runs on several different schedules (circulation, instruction, meetings and events,
training, class relocation) and what looks to be open may, in fact, be booked for another
purpose. All of these should appear on the library Google Calendar but check, anyhow.
Selection Policy and Procedures
Teachers and students of all grade levels will be trained to self check-in and self check-out of
materials. The Librarian and clerk will monitor for assistance.
If a student did not bring his or her books back, they may not check more out but their books
will be renewed. Its okay for the students to renew items if they are not done with them.
Students will be able to keep books for 2 weeks.

Quantity of Books Students can check out:

Kindergarten through 2nd Grade - 3 Books
3rd and 4th Grade - 4 Books
5th Grade - 5 Books
Parents - 10 Books
Due to high demand, students may check out ONE each of the following items:
magazines
Bluebonnet books
2X2 books
any series (Junie B. Jones, Harry Potter, Wimpy Kid, Goosebumps)
graphic novels
Playaways and books on CD
Students will be taught the Five Finger Rule in order to choose just right books at their reading
level. With our emphasis on reading and literature, it is very important that students are
matched to at least one book that they are able to read/understand.
Fines and Charges
Students are ONLY charged for lost and damaged books. A book will show up in the system as
lost only after the student begins paying for it or when damage has been assessed. Students
may pay for the book in total or in installments. The library may only receive the exact amount;
no change can be made as we are not allowed to keep money in the library. If a student believes
to have returned the book to the library, he or she is welcome to check on the shelves and carts
to see if they can find it.

Inventory Of Materials
Irving ISD operates an ILL (interlibrary loan) system between all of its campuses and the
Instructional Center. You can request items from other campuses and they will be sent to
Barton. We will also return them to the other campuses and the Instructional Center.
The Barton Library currently owns several different types of materials. Books, magazines, big
books, pop-up books, kits, audio books, Playaways, manipulatives, class sets of books, posters,
globes, dictionaries, online databases, electronic books (fiction and nonfiction), audio books on
the web, electronic primary source documents, electronically-accessed copyright free images,
and professional books and kits. All are available to staff for checkout; some items are not
available to students.
The Ratteree or Instructional Center have numerous classroom sets of books in both English
and Spanish. You can contact Betsy Johnson (who is in charge of this service) directly or
through your Librarian via a Google Form where you can request materials. It is important that
you return the materials in a timely manner; others may be waiting for them to use with their
class.

Electronic Resources
Every Irving ISD staff member and students (as well as their families) has access to any and all
of our electronic resources, both on and off campus. We currently have subscriptions to the
following: explora, Teaching Books.net, Britannica (English and Spanish), World Book, EBSCO
Host, Culture Grams, Pebble Go, TumbleBooks, Gale-Cengage Learning, Britannica Image

Library Computers and iPads

students, staff, and parents (during circulation time, students should only be utilizing the PAC
on the library computers.) In addition, we have 7 iPads available for student and parent
circulation (single day check out) and 3 iPads which stay in the library permanently.
Maintaining Materials and Equipment
Staff, Students and Parents are welcome to use the library and its resources, everyone is
responsible for taking care of the facility. If you use the library, please pick up after yourself:
trash, materials, replace furniture to its original location, wipe up any spills, crumbs, or nasty
stuff, put books on the appropriate cart, pick up shelf markers, and carry all equipment and
supplies back out with you. If you need to use the library space for meetings, trainings, etc.,
please communicate with the Librarian as early as possible so that she can reserve the space for
you and verify that the library isnt being used by another group at that time.
Badges
If you need a replacement badge or have a new student who needs a badge, fill out the Badge
Replacement Form via Google Form on the Library Website. The initial badge is free but every
replacement costs $2 for both students and staff members. Cash payment is required before
replacement badge can be made.
