6) Title of the topic

AN EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF ANUPANA IN THE

PURGATIVE ACTION OF ICCHABHEDI RASA.

6) Brief Resume of Intended Work:

6.1) Need for the study:

Anupana is the drug which is administered along with or after
the intake of the main active drug. Just as the oil spreads quickly
when put into water, similarly the quick absorption and assimilation
of the medicine in the body is facilitated due to the addition of
anupana1.
Anupana also helps in increasing the palatability, in changing the
physical form, in disintegration, dissolution, absorption and
reduction of gastric irritation of the main drug. As the same drug is
indicated in different diseases by changing the Anupana
accordingly, this indicate the site specific drug delivery2.
Purgative is a drug which promotes defecation and is used in the
treatment of constipation. Icchabedi rasa is a drastic purgative
indicated in diseases like Jalodara, Gulma, Ajeerna etc., for the
purpose of Kaya shodhana in the form of Virechana. It is specified
to administer with Sheethajala as Anupana and is also said that
intake of Ushnajala stops the purgative action of the drug3.
Considering the above factors, the study is planned in order to
evaluate the role of Anupana in the purgative action of Icchabhedi
rasa.

6.2) Review of literature

1. Anupana is the drug which is administered along with the main
active drug to
obtain better therapeutic efficacy is mentioned in Rasatarangini 2
.
2. Anupana facilitates quick absorption and assimilation of the
main active drug
similar to quick spread of water in oil is mentioned in
Sharangadara Samhitha1.
3. Icchabhedi rasa is a drastic purgative indicated in diseases like
Jalodara, Gulma,
Ajeerna etc., with Sheetajala as Anupana is mentioned in
Bhaishajya Ratnavali3.
4. Intake of Ushnajala stops the purgative action of the Icchabhedi
rasa is mentioned
in Bhaishajya Ratnavali3.
