I. Concept Notes:
A POLYNOMIAL FUNCTION is a set of ordered pairs (x, y) in the
form of:

n must be a positive integer

f x an x an 1 x
n

n 1

a1 x ao

All of these coefficients are real

numbers
The DEGREE of a polynomial function in one variable is the greatest
exponent of its variable.
A LEADING COEFFICIENT is the coefficient of the term with the
highest degree.
Polynomials of small degree have special names. The following table
lists the names of polynomials of degree up to 9:

Variations of Polynomial Functions

A UNIVARIATE POLYNOMIAL
independent variable.
One example is 3x8 + 15x4 + 1.

is a polynomial of only one

A MULTIVARIATE POLYNOMIAL is a polynomial of two or more

independent variables. One example is x2y2 + 3xyz3 - 2z4.

Rules in Identifying Polynomial Functions

1.
2.
3.
4.

The variable must not appear in a denominator. In figure, 1/x.

The terms/expressions must not appear in a radical sign.
The variable cannot be an exponent. In figure, 5x.
The variable cannot have a negative or fractional exponent. In figure,
x-3 or x3/4.
5. The polynomials are written in descending powers of the variable. In
figure, 6x2 + 5x 9.
FINDING THE VALUE AND DETERMINING THE DEGREE OF
POLYNOMIAL FUNCTIONS
*Two rules in determining degrees of the polynomial functions
1. Degree of [P(x) Q(x)] max (m, n)
2. Degree of P(x) Q(x) = degree of P(x) + degree of Q(x) = m + n
Example 1:
If P(x) = 3x3 + 3x2 2 and Q(x) = 3x2 2x+5, then what is the
value of the following functions:
A.) P(x) +Q(x)

B.) P(x)-Q(x)

A.) P(x) +Q(x) = (3x3 + 3x2 2) + (3x2 2x+5)

= 3x3 + 3x2 2 +3x2 2x+5
= 3x3 + 3x2 + 3x2 2x-2+5
= 3x3 + 6x2 -2x +3
* Degree of [P(x) + Q(x)] = 3

B.) P(x) -Q(x) = (3x3 + 3x2 2) - (3x2 2x+5)

= 3x3 + 3x2 2 -3x2 + 2x-5
= 3x3 + 3x2 - 3x2 + 2x 2 - 5

C.) P(x) Q(x)

= 3x3 +2x -7
* Degree of [P(x) - Q(x)] = 3

C.) P(x) Q(x) = (3x3 + 3x2 2) (3x2 2x+5)

= (3x3) (3x2) + (3x2) (3x2) (2) (3x2) + (3x3) (-2x) + (3x2) (-2x) (2) (2x) + (3x3) (5) + (3x2) (5) -2(5)
= 9x5 + 9x4 - 6x2 - 6x4 - 6x3 + 4x + 15x3 +15x2 -10
= 9x5 + 9x4 - 6x4 - 6x3 +15x3 - 6x2 + 15x2 + 4x -10
= 9x5 + 3x4 + 9x3 + 9x2 +4x-10
* Degree of [P(x).Q(x)] = 5

Example 2:
If P(x) = 3x3 - 4x2 + 5 and Q(x) = x3 - 5x -1, what is the value of
each function?
A.)

P(2)

B.) P(1) + Q(1)

A.)
P(2) = 3(2)3 4(2)2 + 5
4(1)2 + 5] + [(1)3 5(1) -1]
= 3(8) 4(4) + 5
(1- 5 -1)
= 24 16 + 5
=8+5
= 13

B.) P(1) + Q(1) = [3(1)3

= (3 4 + 5) +
= 4 + (-5)
=45
= -1

D. Lifelong Learning
The quality of mans life depends on how you deeply touched
the lives of others.-Jackson Brown Jr. said. In this life, competition governs
every individual and almost everyone forgets the value of humility. Some
understand what it is, but failed to show it. Humility makes us functional and
influential and even inspires loyalty and honor.
With all honesty, if you are to rate yourself from 0 5, what
percentage will you give to yourself and why?
