Fishing - Pakistan

Fishing
One of the oldest occupation of Pakistan.
Fish important food, full of proteins and fats.
Protein : 13 to 20%
Fats : 10 o 12%
Also full of calcium, phosphorus, iron, iodine
and vitamin A & D.

Plays important role in the economy of


Pakistan.
Important source for the coastal inhabitant.
Apart from marine fishing Inland fisheries
(lakes, rivers, canals) are also important source
of fishing.
Fishing share in GNP = 0.3%
More than 1 million people of Pakistan are
engaged with this occupation.

Free of cholesterol meat.


Fishing sector provide employment to trade
and business.
Fish oil use for nutrition.
Fishs waste use in poultry feed and fertilizers.

2. Inland fishing

Marine fishing Pakistan


Large exporter of fish and prawns and earn
large amount of foreign exchange.
During 2005 06 fish products were exported
to 32 countries (U.S.A, U.A.E, Germany).
Provides 85% of total catch.
Marine fishing areas in Pakistan:
1. Karachi (Sindh Coastal Area)
2. Makran (Baluchistan Coastal Area)

Karachi Sindh Coastal Area


Extents south east from Karachi to the Indian
border.
Approx. 300 km long.
There is broad continental shelf and we found
numerous cracks and cracks are rich in fish
food.
Mangroves are best breading ground for fish
and prawns.

30% of total coast line


65%of the total catch of the fish.
Karachi is the main fishing ground.
Important for prawns.

Makran Baluchistan Coastal Area


Lies in the west of Karachi along the coast of
Baluchistan to the border of Iran.
Approx. 700 km long.
Continental shelf is narrow.
70% of the total coast line
35% of the total marine catch

Baluchistan is inferior producer in fish because
of less nutrients in water.
Fishing done throughout the year.
Largest catch is obtained around Nov to Jan.
Important for herring fish and cat fish.

Govt. has developed four fishing harbour.

Inland fishing Pakistan


Comprise of rivers, lakes, canals, dams and
etc.
Provide 15%of total catch.
Sindhs inland fishing: 70%
Punjabs inland fishing: 29%
KPKs inland fishing: 1%

Inland fishing Pakistan


Two types of Inland fishing:
1. Commercial fishing.
Caught for the foreign exchange
2. Subsistence fishing.
Fish caught and consume fisherman and their
families

Aqua culture and hatcheries


A number of fish hatcheries and nurseries have
been developed in Pakistan.
Sindh: 2 hatcheries (Thatha, Sakhar)
KPK: 2 trout hatcheries (Madayn, Alpuri)
Punjab: 26 hatcheries.
