10 Pile Capacity from In-situ Tests Numerical

1. A 400 mm square pre-cast, R.C.C. pile is driven by 9 m into a sandy bed. The SPT

Compute FOS available, if 1100 kN of compressive load is applied on this pile.
2. A 5 m thick layer of medium sand overlies a deep deposit of dense gravel. Series
of SPT carried out through the depth of the sand has established that the average
blow count is 22. Further tests show that the gravel has a SPT value of 40 in the
region of the interface with the sand. A precast pile of square section 0.25 x 0.25
m2 is to be driven through the sand and to penetrate sufficiently into the gravel to
give good end bearing. Adopting a safety factor of 3, determine the allowable
load that the pile will be able to carry.
3. A 6 m thick layer of medium dense sand overlies a deep dense gravel. Series of
SPT were undertaken and the sand stratum showed an average N-value of 21.
From the tests on gravel, the N-value at the interface has been interpolated as
42. A round pile of 250 mm diameter is to be driven down through the sand
gravel to give adequate end bearing, taking a FOS = 3.0, determine the allowable
load that the pile can carry.
4. A single pile of 30 cm diameter is driven to a depth of 10 m into a deep layer of
loose to medium dense sand deposit. The soil investigation carried out at the site
gives an average SPT value of 12 along the shaft and 15 at the base level.
(a) Compute the ultimate load capacity of the pile by Meyerhofs (1956, 1976)
formula and the allowable load for FOS = 4.0.
(b) If the pile is a bored pile, what is the ultimate and the allowable load for FOS =
2.5.
(c) If the pile is H-pile, what is the ultimate and the allowable load for FOS = 3.0.
5. Find the length of a precast concrete pile having diameter of 400 mm driven for
an apartment foundation at Khumaltar, Laltitpur to carry a design load of 450 kN.
The soil found in the site is loose to medium dense sand with an average N=value
of 15 along the pile shaft and 21 at the base of the pile. WT may rise upto the
ground level. The average saturated unit weight of soil is 18.5 kN/m 3.
(a) Use static formula.
(b) Use Meyerhofs formula
(c) Determine allowable load on the pile taking FOS = 2.5.

6. To carry a safe load of 650 kN, a concrete pile having diameter of 400 mm is
required to be driven into a homogeneous mass of c = 0 soils. The static cone
penetration test (SCPT) or Dutch Cone Test conducted at the site gives an
average value of cone resistance of 40 kg/cm 2 along the pile and 120 kg/cm 2
below the base level of the pile. Calculate the length of the pile taking FOS = 2.5.
