Targetaudience:
Theprogramisopentoallchildreningradeskindergartenthrougheighthgrade.
However,themainfocuswillbeonattractingchildrenfromlowersocioeconomicfamiliesin
gradesthreethroughfive.Specifically,wewillbeseekingtoincreaseparticipationfromthe
followingethniccommunitygroups:Bolivian,Guatemalan,Hmong,andCambodian.Whilethe
readingprogramencompassesamulticulturalapproach,wearehopefulthatwecanhavemany
childrenandfamiliesfromthespecificethnicgroupsparticipate.
Justification
:
Afterworkingveryhardthroughouttheschoolyear,manystudentslosevaluablereading
andmathskillsduringthesummermonths.Thedeclineofskillsduringthesummerisoften
knownasthesummerslide(Lesesne,2015,p.47)orsummerdrift(Whittingham&

monthsofschoollearningoverthecourseofthesummer.Losseswerenotedinbothmathand

children,thosechildrenfromlowersocioeconomicbackgroundshavethegreatestdecline.
Accordingtothearticle,

theNewYorkStateLibrary,
AnindepthstudyofBaltimoreareastudents,Alexanderetal.

11

(2007),concludedthatstudentsfrombothbetteroffanddisadvantagedbackgroundsmade
similarachievementgainsduringtheschoolyear.However,duringthesummerthe
disadvantagedyouthfellsignificantlybehindinreading(
TheImportanceofSummerReading:
PublicLibrarySummerReadingProgramsandLearning,2015).
Whencreatingsummerreadingprograms,itisalsoimportanttorememberthatallpeople
learndifferently.Therefore,itisimportanttobefamiliarwithboththebasiclearningstyles,as
wellasmultipleintelligenceswhencreatingservicesandworkingwithchildren.Learningstyles
andmultipleintelligencesarenotthesamething.Onewithastrongvisualintelligence,should
notbelimitedtosolelylisteningtoinformationinordertolearnit.Rather,itisimportanttobe
exposedtoavarietyofintelligencestosupportdevelopment.
Onecommonmisconception
aboutmultipleintelligencesisthatitmeansthesamethingaslearningstyles.Instead,multiple
intelligencesrepresentsdifferentintellectualabilities.Learningstyles,accordingtoHoward
Gardner,arethewaysinwhichanindividualapproachesarangeoftasks.Theyhavebeen
categorizedinanumberofdifferentwaysvisual,auditory,andkinesthetic,impulsiveand
reflective,rightbrainandleftbrain,etc.(
MultipleIntelligences:WhatDoestheResearchSay?,

).Additionally,developinghandsonactivitiesforsummerreadingprogramswillbe
essentialtoasummerreadingprogram.AccordingtochildrensmanageratWichitaPublic
LibraryDowneyHowerton,Whenyou

(Couri,2015,p.72).
Inanefforttocreateanappealingsummerreadingprogram,TeriS.Lesesneidentified

keyfactorsthatmightresolvesomeoftheproblemswithSRPs(Lesesne,2015,p.47).

12

Additionally,WhittinghamandRickman(2015)statesthat,Studiesfromthelatetwentieth
centurytopresenthavedemonstratedaslowdowninsummerdriftattributedtospecificsummer
readingprogramsaddressingmotivationthroughstudentchoice,studentownership,and
teacher/parentscaffolding(Whittingham&Rickman,2015,p.19).
Inconclusion,itisimperativethatsummerprogramsenticeallchildrentoparticipate.
However,becausewearefocusingonthosefamiliesfromlowersocioeconomicbackgrounds
whencreatingprograms,wemustbemindfulofresourcesthosechildrenmayormaynothave.
Programswhichallowforstudentchoice,access,andhandsonactivitieswillencourage
participation.Lastly,communicationbetweenpubliclibrariansandschoollibrariansregarding
