Insulation

Through the use of the geothermal heat pump, the Bendee Downs shearing
shed will be a more hospitable place for both occupants and tenants of the
structure. However, this form of temperature control will not be sufficient in
the means of maintaining a comfortable temperature within the shearing shed.
Additional measures of temperature control will be implemented through the
use of insulation. This insulation will assist in sustaining a comfortable
temperature within the structure. The Bendee Downs area is described as a
hot, dry climate as shown in Figure __ and reducing heat gain is of most
importance. (Commonwealth of Australia, 2008)

Figure __: Climate Zones of Australia (Commonwealth of Australia, 2008)

For this climate area, the minimum suggested R-values for walls and roofs are
1.9 and 2.7 respectively, R-values. As there are many forms of residential
insulation available, it is imperative that the chosen insulation is suitable for
both the location and size of the structure.

Relative price of $810[1]. (Bintec Pty Ltd)
Very highly fire resistant.
Made from 70% recycled glass.
Manufacturing requires large amounts of energy
and thus releases reasonable amounts of CO2.
Irritable during insulation and can result in
airborne fibres which may result in health issues.

Using the parameters of R-value, price, versatility and health issues, a decision
matrix will be applied to the situation where the R-value will be ranked the
most important of the criteria. The criteria that will follow in importance are
health issues, versatility and price; they will be given the following percentage
of importance:

Figure __: Decision Matrix of Insulation

As it can be seen from Figure __, Extruded Polystyrene is the most suitable form
of insulation for the Bendee Downs shearing shed. It is a fantastic insulator
and is versatile; however it is relatively more expensive than all other
insulation. The expense of the material is considered a secondary constraint
due to the Kooma people wishing for the Bendee Downs shearing shed to
become a site that will be an attraction for an extensive time.
