What Is An ImagesetterP
The Linotronic imagesetter (or
'Kino"),which became available abouta
year after the Macintosh/Laserwriter
combination had been introduced,
sexved to bring desktop publishing into
the realms of serious consideration for
professional typesetters and graphic artists.
Birmy Graphics
The systems offered by Birmy Graphics, because they use a RIP (taster image
processor) which is built out of an IBM
PC computer,
are modular, fiexibte and
priced competitively. Their controller
boards are lrom Rips and they have
Apptetatk, serial, parallel and Ethernet

The CG 9400PS imagesetter, a 2,400

with the Linotronic 800, uses a genuine

to speed things up through a process
called page buffering. This allows the
unit to be printing one page while processing the next. These machines are
available with 40- or 80-megabyte hard
disks that contain either % or 'lS PostScripttypefitces, and can produce halFtones with up to 150 lines per inch and
over RS6 gray levels.
According to AGFA Compugxuphic,
reconditioned equipment is available,

New devices are expected in April that
include faster RISC processors promising speed increases in the area of RSO%%u

AGFA Compugraphic has five service

Varityper
Varityper brought out two PostScript
imagesetters in early'89. The 4500P can
print 2,400 dpi while the 4200P outputs
up to 1,800 dpi. These two units use
genuineAdobeRIPs. RecentlyVarityper
has reformulated their line tobe moduhr. Now they have what they call their
4000 series in which everything is an
option. This means nailing down pricing is a bit tricky, but it allows them to
configure systems to user's needs more
effectively. RAM size, RAM speed, hard
disk size, and output devices can all be
custom selected for the particular working environment Multiple devices can

Design Studio:
A Second Opinion
-ReadySetGrumble
Jy Irah Ginsh
With the release of DesignStudio, Letraset has gone beyond the boundaries
of agood software upgrade policy.The
look and feel of DesignStudio is vexy
similar to thatof Ready,Set,Goi (RSG), a
previous Letraset product. Anyone with
aworkingknowledge ofRSGwill see that
DesignStudiohas tobe regarded asamajor upgrade of RSG with an outrageous
price xxlcf ease.
I purchased the original program for
$195. Therebave been atleastfourmajor
upgrades to RSG and each time they
have cost between $100 and $5Nk That
purchase was always motivated by the
promise that at last, RSG would truly be
a professional desktop publishing software package that could not only ccxxnpete with any other desktop publishing
softwaxebuthavedis6nc6vefeatures that
set it apart kom and above itscompetitors.
Because RSG was one of the vexy first
programs purchased
I
for myMac, Ihave
held a strange sense of loyalty to it even
though the rest of the Macintosh community felt that it was an inferior package to its coxnpelitors. Since Letraset
took over RSG kom its originator Manhattan Graphics, the program has steadily been getting hetter, though it still
lagged behind in crucial areas. At the
most recent version 4.5, I really an6cxpated therelease of version 5.0 where
RSG would finaHy come to full maturity
and be all that it has promised to be.
