Identify Areas for Coaching: Whats the Big Picture?


These could be within the lesson or unit design, the Common Core State Standards, classroom
management, academic language, checking for understanding, data analysis, classroom culture,
routines and procedures, or others (Aguilar, 2013).

Identify Standards and Criteria


Identify external standards and criteria that we could, or should, usestandards or rubrics of
effective teaching, evaluation tools, administrator's leadership standards, or externally mandated
improvement plans (Aguilar, 2013).

Determine a SMARTE Goal

Measurable

Attainable

Results-Based

Time-bound

Equitable

Identify High Leverage Activities


Identify the activities that will guide a client toward his goal. This happens in two partsfirst, in
a brainstorming conversation with the client, and then you can reflect on the work thus far and
add other activities that might be helpful (Aguilar, 2013).

Break Down the Learning


It is essential that coaches determine where a client is in her learning (Aguilar, 2013).

Determine Indicators of Progress


Agree on data and evidence to demonstrate progress toward goals (Aguilar, 2013).

Develop Coaching Theories of Action


A theory of action is an articulated rationale behind a strategy that's meant to improve student
learning. It's expressed in a simple if-then statement, but it also needs to be specific and explicit
in its reasoning (Aguilar, 2013).

Determine Coachs Goals


Guide and assess coaching using the transformational coaching rubric (Aguilar, 2013).

Compile Resources
Identify texts and resources such as books, articles, curriculum guides, specialists, and
workshops to use as references (Aguilar, 2013).

Present and Celebrate the Plan


Write up the plan and present it to the client and possibly principal (Aguilar, 2013).
