leadership. Her passion for the greater
Cadillac area is evident in everything she
does and we are thankful for her direction.
I want to thank Bill Tencza for his administration through a time of exciting change
with the addition of Paula Jasper as the
new membership director. Also, a special thanks to Deb Gillies and Amanda
Hamilton for not only what they do on a
daily basis, but for preparing Paula for her
very important role at CACC.
As the incoming executive director, I will
do my best to fill the position as competently as those before me. I feel blessed to
be part of such a vibrant community and
to have great relationships already established. I know CACC has a proud and notable past and I am equally confident CACC
is in an excellent position to have a strong
and fruitful future. As we undertake the
next year, CACC will embrace it with optimism and renewed focus as the strategic
plan unfolds while ensuring the needs will
be met for all members. On behalf of the

provide more than spirit to the community

The 2016 recipients of the Spirit of Community
award are Karen and David McMahon, the first
husband and wife team ever nominated.
They each bring their own story of devoting
time and energy to improve the quality of life
for others in the community, said nominator
Judy Coffey. They have demonstrated leadership and initiative.
The McMahons moved to Cadillac in 1982
when Dave became the associate pastor of the
First Baptist Church, now senior pastor. Under
his leadership, membership and ministry outreaches expanded as he challenged members
to be faithful to the scriptures and to fulfill
what Jesus has called them to do.
In 1998, Dave brought church leaders together to discuss the ministry potential of Love In
the Name of Christ to meet needs in the community.
He worked hard to get funding, Coffey said.
He insisted that if we are faithful, it will all
come together.
In their recent annual meeting, Love INC
reported that by working with 55 churches in
two counties. They answered 4,000 calls for
help, providing $1.3 million in service.
At 6 feet, 4 inches tall, Mac has led the First
Baptist Church for three decades.
Mac has done a wonderful job. People love
them both, said Steve Playter, church member.
They brought compassion and genuine concern for people. Dave brought us the awareness
that we are in relationship with other churches
and that we serve together.
I have a high admiration for Karen, said
Coffey. Shes not the typical pastors wife. She
has her own strong skill set and has used that to
help people.
Karen is a woman of depth and character,
said Terri Raffaele. I know that people seek out
her wisdom and advice. But shes a quiet server
and doesnt talk much about what she does.
The faith-based community has a unique
perspective and ability to help the community at large by augmenting
areas of need not often recognized by the business community, said
Bill Tencza, President of the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce.
Pastor Dave and Karen have shown leadership and hands-on commitment to support areas of need in our community.
In addition to helping found Love INC, Dave was recognized for
serving several terms as president of the Cadillac Area Ministerial
Association. Karen was honored for initiating the Women of Worth
Ministry, the Stephen Ministry and for leadership in directing and
expanding the Cadillac Area Backpack Program to ensure that school

children dont go hungry over the weekend.

I get to be the face of the program, Karen said. Its the community,
the teachers, staff and administrators, civic groups, and the volunteers, these are the heroines. They responded to the need much more
than I could have imagined ... I am humbled to receive this. Thank
you.
We have prayed for years that Cadillac would be a place where people come and raise their families, and where they could find faith in
Jesus Christ, said Dave, as he expressed gratitude for the award.

hard-working ... with a kind heart

2016 Outstanding Citizen, Dean DeKryger
This years 2016 Outstanding Citizen, Dean DeKryger of DK Design
Group, was nominated for the award by close friend, fellow architect
and business partner, Scott Kleinsorge.
Hes deserving. You name it and hes been on it, Kleinsorge said.
Im the quiet guy. Hes more in the forefront. He loves to facilitate
things. Hes a strong leader. And when I talked with his wife, Cheryl,
we came up with 15 different boards hes been involved with.
Kleinsorge stressed that DeKryger is a community-oriented person
who wants to see Cadillac thrive. He nominated his business partner and best friend at the urging of others who wanted to see him
recognized for his contributions to: Habitat for Humanity, the soccer field and Lincoln field improvements, Life Resources of Northern
Michigan, and many area business projects, including the YMCA
facility.
The DK Design Group is really successful in Cadillac, said Bill
Tencza, President of the Cadillac Area Chamber of Commerce.
Behind the scenes, good things are happening in this community
with DK donating their services and helping people.
He does a tremendous amount for our community, added Jeremy
Winkle. Weve served on boards and have volunteered together. Hes
a person willing to do the work; hes not somebody that just shows up

occasionally. Hes all in.

Dean is a very hard working individual with a kind and giving
heart, said friend Jon Catlin. His firm has donated a lot of money
to projects around town. But the firm also picks a pro-bono project
every year internationally. They work a lot with Young Life camps
and take mission trips. They donated a design for a medical clinic in
Honduras, and thats just one example.
Catlin pointed out that in addition to his serious side; DeKryger is
quick witted and fun loving ... and a good biker buddy. Once a week
they head out on their Harleys to explore the country side.
His wife, Cheryl, is the one that keeps him and their four sons
grounded, Catlin added. She makes sure they dont get too far out
of line.
Hes all about faith and family first, said Kleinsorge. Hes a great
dad and a great husband. Hes a great business partner ... honest as
the day is long. He deserves this award.
I think we live in the most incredible community on earth,
DeKryger said when he accepted his award. When we were looking
for a place to live, we looked at Traverse City. But the Lord had a plan
for us. We found a position here in Cadillac. He had great plans for us
and I couldnt ask for a better place to raise a family and build great
relationships. Thank you very much.

Baker College of Cadillac has awarded Dylan Rodenbaugh,

of McBain, the 2016 Ed Kurtz Leadership Scholarship
award.
The $2,500 scholarship is awarded annually to a Baker
College of Cadillac student who demonstrates academic
achievement and either a commitment to community service
or a successful balance of work, family and school obligations.

Munson Healthcare Cadillac Hospital announced that

because of its generous donors, the hospital is able to fund
more than $1.4 million in capital projects for fiscal year 2017.
The funds that are coming from board-designated endowment funds will be used to acquire state-of-the-art imaging
equipment and upgrades, a new surgical table and microscope for Surgical Services, new defibrillators for its nursing
units, and the replacement of an emergency generator.

to Antenna with Launch of
New Local Channel

The Pell Imaging Center, named for the late Harvey Pell,
will see $680,000 in upgrades and new equipment, including
a new digital mammography unit and a new radiographic
machine. Surgical Services will see $155,000 for their new
surgical table and microscope. The hospital will also benefit from $130,000 to purchase the new defibrillators and
$500,000 for the replacement of an emergency generator.

With the launch of a new Classic game channel Buzzr

on antenna channel 26.6, local TV station MI News 26 now
offers viewers game show legends such as Richard Dawson
and Monty Hall. Buzzr is the latest addition to MI News 26s
over-the-air lineup, which now totals six channels.

Twelve students from the Wexford-Missaukee ISD graduated from the Baker College early/middle college program
having essentially earned free associate degrees. They did
some of this college course work during their 11th and 12th
grade high school experience and then attended an additional year a 13th year of high school on the Cadillac
campus. All college credit is at no cost to the students or
their families.

Healing Private Wounds received $2,050 from the Cadillac
Womens Giving Circle. The money will go to further the
