ABSTRACT

Welding plays very important role in fabrication industry and to ensure the quality of
fabrication, all the welding shall be defects free. As welding defects can greatly affect
weld performance and longevity, early detection and correction is important to ensure
that welds can carry out their designed purpose. For ensuring the quality of welding joints
and finally the integrity of the equipment, various inspection and testing methods are
available in todays modern industries.
The prime objective of this project - INSPECTION AND TESTING OF PRESSURE
VESSELS IN FABRICATION INDUSTRY - is to study and understand the purpose
& importance of various inspection & testing methods in industries especially for
welding in fabrication industry. In order to achieve this particular objective, Ammonia
Bullets has been taken as a case study for this project. These bullets are meant for the
purpose of transporting Liquefied Ammonia Gas (LAG) through self-propelled barge.
This project details various steps involved in inspection and testing from the very
beginning stage of procurement of raw material to the last stage of final inspection in
order to ensure the integrity of the equipment. The testing methods include both
destructive testing methods and Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) methods. NDT is one of
the most reliable tools in fabrication industries and plays very crucial role in ensuring the
quality of the weld joints.
This project also discusses various welding techniques used and welding defects found
during the fabrication of Ammonia Bullets. This study gives an introduction to various
codes & standards especially (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) ASME codes
& standards used for the design, fabrication, inspection and testing of Ammonia Bullets.
