Academic Workshops 2014

Teaching Vocabulary in Meaningful Ways

The need for useful techniques to introduce new vocabulary and to
recycle previously taught items has become stronger as we notice that
our students have trouble remembering what they have seen in class.
This workshop aims at providing teachers with fresh ideas on
presenting and applying new vocabulary in fun and motivating ways.
Assessing Writing
One of the most neglected skills in ELT is writing. However, it is very
important and it is also important to be able to assess students writing
skills in a way that students continue to feel inspired to continue
writing. Although it is not easy to do so, in this workshop we will go
over some ways of assessing our students writing and provide you with
tools to design objective tasks.
Differentiated Instruction
Although teachers agree that all students are entitled to instruction
geared to their needs, interests, and developmental levels, they have
many questions as to what to differentiate and how to do it. Therefore,
we will start by stating what DI is and sharing its rationale. Then we will
mention the general principles of differentiation and will go over
strategies for implementing DI in their classrooms.
Developing Intercultural Awareness in ELT
In the past, teaching cultural aspects of English speaking countries in
ELT was considered advisable, yet elective. Due to the factors of our
current globalized world, discussions are being held to determine
whether we should go beyond, incorporating the development of the
5th skill in our syllabus. However, we should first take into account our
students needs because these will never be global.

The use of technology has definitely changed the way we live. One
example is its application in education, leading to what we call the
flipped classroom. But, what is the flipped classroom? How did it
start? How do we apply it? The answer to these questions and practical
examples will be provided in this session.
Should we CLIL?
Nowadays, more and more primary school teachers have become
interested in including content in their lessons. For many years, it was
thought exclusive of bilingual programs. However implementing it in
regular ELT primary lessons has had great results. There are simple
tasks and activities that can be very motivating for the primary learner.
Come and see what we have prepared for you!
Games for Teenage English classrooms
Dealing with bored teens is something that most teachers know very
well. It is the teachers task to find motivating materials to keep their
attention. Including games for grammar and vocabulary practice as
well as for increasing fluency is a well known alternative. In this session
we will provide you with ideas that you can apply in your classes.
Key Factors in Competency-based Teaching
Nowadays, everyone talks about Competencies in Language Teaching.
Most school programs and language courses are now built around
them. It seems that even in ELT there are trends, and Competencybased teaching is one of them. Is Competency-based Language
teaching something new? How can we implement competencies in our
teaching? In this workshop, we will answer these questions and look at
the key factors that will help us include them in our programs.

LOA - Learning Oriented Assessment

When considering different types of assessment, we normally focus on
the nature of Formative and Summative assessment instead of thinking
about their purpose and use. But, if our challenge is to support
learning, then LOA is the response. In this session we will explain the

idea of LOA and its aims, we will discuss how it works and how it
contributes to teaching and learning.
