A NOTE FROM
THE EDITOR
With todays
busier-than-ever
summertime schedules, its often difficult to find time
to complete our crochet projects.
In this issue, weve labeled several
patterns that can be made in
a weekend or less, making them
ideal to finish during breaks at
work, in the evening, at family
get-togethers or on vacation.
Sunday, Aug. 2, 2009, is
Friendship Day, and its the
perfect opportunity to show your
friends how much you appreciate them with a special handmade
gift. Our Celebrate Friends feature on page 14, offers three lovely
projects to make for those special
gal pals in your life.
Warm regards,

Letters from our readers

Prizewinning Project

I made A Monkey on My
Back from your September
2008 issue, and
although I had
never crocheted an
animal, I had to
try this one. I entered him in the
Minnesota State Fair and, to my
surprise, I got a first place blue
ribbon on him. Here is a picture
of him on exhibit at the fair with
his ribbon.
Thank you for a great magazine!

Kathy Pruchnicki, Big Lake, Minn.

More Monkey Business

The first issue of Crochet! that

I purchased was the September
2008 issue. I especially wanted
to make the orangutan featured
in A Monkey on My Back. The

instructions were very easy to

follow. I only had one question
involving the pattern, which was
answered very quickly.
I used a different
color and brand of
yarn than the pattern suggested, and I
changed the eyes slightly. I really
enjoyed working on this little guy.
Everyone who has seen him cannot believe that I made him on
my own. He is just adorable!
Thank you for such a great
first-class magazine. I look forward to many future issues.

Shelley Rebhun, via e-mail

Changing the look

How to Modify V-necklines &
sleeves to suit your style
B Y D ARLA SI M S

Have you ever wanted to modify the depth of a V-neckline

or the length of the sleeves on some of your favorite
crochet sweater and top patterns, but didnt know how?
Its easy once you understand the mathematical basics
involved. Youll need but a few tools to work out your own
modifications: pencil, eraser, graph or science paper, handheld calculator, knitting gauge measure and scratch paper.

The three-quarter-sleeve Ruf-

fled V-Neck Pullover shown here

serves as the example for this article. It was purposely designed
to be worked in plain half double
crochet. After you understand the
basic principles of adapting both
necklines and sleeves, you can then
try working a different sweater using your own design elements such
as stripes, different stitch patterns,
or working other types of edgings
as you like. When shaping both
V-necklines and sleeves, one must
create an angle whether working
increases (for sleeves) or decreases
(for V-necklines).

How to Begin V-Neck

Shaping
The starting point requires the
following: gauge, total number of
32

Crochet! July 2009

body stitches, number of stitches

required for neck opening, length
and the number of rows required
from the armhole to the shoulder,
along with the number of stitches
needed for each shoulder.
Gauge is the single most important element that determines
the final fit and measurements of
any garment and must be accurate.
While you need to make a sample
swatch to determine gauge, youll
find that gauge is often given (as
in our pullover) as follows:
Gauge: With size H hook: 14 hdc
= 4 inches; 11 rows = 4 inches.

Gauge Tip
While the number of stitches
per inch tends to remain constant
as you crochet, the number of rows
per inch tends to change so slight-

ly, it is impossible to measure perfectly until you have crocheted at

least 12 or more inches in length.
Youll find it helps to always work
both the front and back before
penciling in numbers for sleeves.
Using a tape measure, count the
number of rows over at least 12
inches and make adjustments to
your row gauge, if necessary.
To modify a V-neckline or a
sleeve, you need precise information. To do that you need to break
down the stitch and row counts to
equal 1 inch. Using your calculator,
divide 14 hdc by 4 inches and the
result is 31/2 hdc to equal 1 inch.
To determine the number of rows
per inch, divide 10 rows by 4 inches for a result of 23/4 rows. These
numbers are vital when it comes to

(see Fig. 1), the beginning row

indicates how many stitches (5)
are to be skipped for the armhole
opening, and indicates that 28 hdc
are required for the left front. You
end with 17 hdc remaining for the
shoulder, as noted. A total of 23
rows is required to achieve the desired armhole depth of 81/2 inches.
You need to decrease 11 stitches, or
one-half of 22, the total number of
stitches required for the neck opening over 23 rows. As noted on the
schematic, the 11 stitches must be
decreased over 23 rows, as evenly as
possible to achieve the straightest
line or angle.
This means you decrease 1 st
(by working 2 sts together at the
neckline edge only), every 2 rows,
11 times. How and when to decrease is easy to calculate for this
particular size. When you divide
the total number of rows (23) by
the number of stitches to be decreased (11), its easy to see that

adapting a pattern to fit ones individual needs and measurements.

As a rule, the shaping for a Vneckline starts on the same row as
does the armhole shaping. However, in the future, you might want
to crochet a pullover with a deeper
V-neck to be worn over a tank
top, turtleneck or other top. Or
you might want a higher neckline with only a 4-inch dropthe
measurement from shoulder line
to bottom of neckline. Once you
understand the basics, you can

modify the depth of neckline to

fit your wants and needs.

first. Begin by drawing your own

schematic outline on graph paper,
then draw a line from the beginning of the neck opening to the
shoulder. Then draw in your decreases, row by row as evenly as
possible, following the line as closely as stitches and rows allow.

Rules of Thumb

two times 11 equals 22 rows, plus

one extra row; but the decreases
cannot always be worked out so
simply.
Using size X-large as the next
example (see Fig. 2), youll see that
12 stitches for the neck opening
must be decreased over 23 rows
and that does not work as easily or
evenly as for size medium,

rules apply for shaping sleeves;

however, instead of decreasing,
stitches must be increased.

When creating an angle, and

the number of rows cannot be divided equally by the number of
stitches to be increased, its best
to work the first decreases closely
(every or every other row) for a
few rows, then decrease the number of rows in between decreases
evenly to create the straightest line,
as shown in schematic for size Xlarge. Conversely, if you work all
the decreases too quickly and then
work many rows evenly, the neckline becomes distorted. The same

How to Begin Sleeve

Shaping
When a sleeve is a set-in, like
our accompanying sweater, or a
drop sleeve, the upper width of
the sleeve must be the same as the
measurement around the entire
armhole opening, meaning both
front and back pieces, in order for
the pieces to fit together.
The starting point for sleeve
shaping requires the following:
gauge, total number of stitches required for the upper sleeve, the
number of stitches for the wrist, as
well as the number of rows required
from the wrist to the armhole. A
drop sleeve ends when you reach
the desired length to the underarm;
however, a set-in sleeve continues

July 2009 CrochetMagazine.com

57

Pat t e r n s continued
evenly from that point until the
length from the underarm to the
top equals the number of stitches
skipped for the armhole opening.
Our pattern gives you the instructions for making three sleeve
lengths: short, three-quarter and
full length, based on the Craft
Yarn Council of Americas sizing standards. To determine sleeve
length and the subsequent number of rows to achieve the desired
length, you must apply the gauge.
For example, a full-length sleeve
for size medium is 171/2 inches in
total length. You must know the
total number of rows required to
achieve the finished length if you
are to know how many increases
are required to widen the sleeve,
as you work.
If you wish to have a 2-inch
rib at the bottom of your sleeve,
then those 2 inches must be deducted from the total number of
rows worked for the body of the
sleeve: 171/2 inches less 2 inches =

151/2 inches. Using the gauge of 23/4

rows per inch times 151/2 inches,
you would need 42 rows. However,
be sure to double check your gauge
as you work because it can easily
differ slightly as you work, as mentioned earlier.
In this case, if worked to 42
rows, instead of measuring 151/2
inches, the length is actually 16
inches or 1/2 inch too long; therefore, the pattern has you work 40
rows for the true measurement.
Knowing the number of rows
required for a full-length sleeve
means you can easily calculate
the number of rows needed for a
three-quarter length. Simply multiply 40 rows by 75 percent and
you see 30 rows are needed. Remember to then deduct the number of rows and/or the number of
inches needed for the ribbing or
other edging.
To determine the length of
a standard short sleeve, simply
multiply the number of rows

Crocheters
Bill of rights
This month, as the United States
celebrates patriotism across our
great land, we are reminded of the
many freedoms our Constitution gives us. But one other
freedom Id really like to have is the ability to crochet all
I want without distractions.
Between chores, family, work
and other obligations, its hard to
work in a few rows of stitches every now and then. So, I present to
you the Crocheters Bill of Rights:
The Freedom to Assemble:
The hardest part of making an
afghan comes after Ive made all
the squares. Now Ive got to piece
them all together, and I need the
time to work on it uninterrupted
until I can finally get all those
loose yarn ends hidden!
Right to Bare Arms: There
have been times when I am stitching a sweater and I just cannot get
the sleeves to work. These are the
times that I reserve the right to go
sleeveless. Besides, I look good in a
sweater vest.
Freedom From Unlawful
Search and Seizure: I tried to
sneak some bags of yarn into the
house the other day with the groceries, but my husband got suspicious when I put the veggies in a
66

Crochet! July 2009

closet. Now he inspects every bag

that comes in the house and he
wants receipts, too.
Cruel and Unusual Punishment: After discovering my deception with the hidden yarn purchases,
my husband took away my credit
card AND my checkbook. I am
now on a yarn diet until next winter.
Double Jeopardy: Last week
when I sat on the sofa to crochet,
I sat right down on a misplaced
C hook. As I jumped up in pain,

I tripped over my craft bag and

ended up on the floor. This should
entitle me to at least a week of recuperative crochet time.
Petition for Redress: This is
handy when the blue single-crochet scarf I made doesnt go with
the orange afghan-stitch sweater.
Ill have to buy more yarn to make
all new go-together pieces.
Once I get this new Constitution passed, Ill crochet a nice
frame for it! C!
