HeardtheyareconsideringtakingouttwoofthescenariosontheRADportionduetotime/trainingconstraints.

1.APUMEL'dsoairstartatthegateforbothengines.ItworkedwellforCapt.toreadtheprocedureoffthe
iPadandtheFOtomovetheswitchesandstarttheengines.Afterpushback,Rwychangeto19soIwasglad
thatwedidthenewnumbersandcontrolchecksinthealleybeforetaxiing.Gotdingedforstartingthetaxi
checklistandnotstoppingitasweheldshortof15.Alsoatnighttheywantustoturnonsomelightsaswe
cross15.OnthewaytoBOS,FOflying,gotaFAC2ECAM,Captworkedtheproceduresandcheckedwith
dispatchviaAirCelltomakesuretheywantedustocontinue,whichwedid.Climbedto290andcheckedRVSM

Nowthatwehadthepractice,ournextmaneuverwasaMAXXwindT/OfromDCA01,flyapatternwithradar
vectorsat1500'andthenavisualMAXXwindlandingalldonewithoutautopilot,autothrustorflightdirectors.
TheywantustoboneuponourflyingskillsandthisistheAmericanwayofdoingso.Justreverttooldschool
flying,rotateto15degrees,powerbacktoclimbandstopthequickclimbbybringingpowerbacktoaround
50%N1at1500'.Iused210knotsflyingdownwindandthenslowedto180knotsgettingFlapsoutto1then2.
Youshouldn'thavetomonkeywiththepowertoomuchifyouhaveabout50%N1whichseemstobethemagic
numberformostconfigurationsweuseplusorminusalittle.Withrunwayinsight,youareclearedthevisual.
TurnedoutalrightforbothofusbutIwillsaythatourC/Atolduslaterthatmostguysdoterriblewiththis.
Theydon'texpectalotofproficiencyonthisbutjustwantustobesafe.Ishutoffmyautothrustonthelinea
lotsothatprobablyhelps.Iwouldsuggestthatandshootingsomevisualapproachesw/oflightdirectorsfor
practice.It'snotthatbadifyouhandflyoutonthelinealittle.
6.EnginefailureEOSIDinBogotaSKBOisonthemissedapproachfrom13R.Atthispointintheday,wewere
wickedtiredbutluckilywedidn'thavetohandflyanyofthis.TheC/AhelpsyouwithsettinguptheEOSIDfor
missedapproachandthenyougetsetup10milesfromtheairport(twoengines)andshoottheapproachandat
minimumsyouseenothing.Dothegoaroundandafteryougetthegearup,yougetanenginefailure.Just
leaveitonautopilotandhavethePMactivatetheSECflightplan.YouhavetomomentarilyselectHDGthen
activate.MakesureitisinNAV.A/Pdoesagoodjobandwhenyoureachaccelerationaltitude(whichwehadto
makeupbecauseitisreallynotdefinedonthisprocedure)wewentthroughtheS/EstufftillMCTand

neverstayinthesameroomforlong.Firstcoupleofhoursspentgoingoveraircraftsystems.FMAindications
ontakeoffwithandwithoutaFlextemp,theeffectsoffrozenpitottubesandunreliableairspeedindications,
etc.Then,you'reoffforemergencyequipmenttrainingandcabindoortraining.It'sallshortandsweet

Day1Groundschool:From9:30tillnoonsystemsreview,atafastpacebutadequateandagoodreview.
Thereisnoscheduledlunchbreakbuttherewastimetogetlunchbetweensessions.Wethenhadourcoursein
emergencyequipmentandinthedoorstrainer.Thenspenttimereviewingthetakeoffandapproachlanding
visibilityrequirements.Thelastclassisahumanfactorscoursethatwasverywelldone.Theinstructorsinall
thecoursematerialweregreatanditwasaneducationaltime.Gotoaapilots.comforsomeoftheground
schoolreviewmaterialisundertrainingthenselect320andlookovertheslide/powerpointformat.
Day2R9RTSisatrainingday.Againgotoaapilots.comandreviewthebriefingandquestionsthatwillbe
asked.(The100questionshavebeenreplacedbythequestionsthatarecontainedinthePowerPoint).Itwasa
wellbalancedbriefanditdidnotappeartobeputting10poundsofbriefintoa5poundbag.Thereistimeto
askquestionsandstillbedoneintheallottedtime.Thesimulatorspotsareasscriptedintheflighttraining

ingroundschool,butinthedescentthepitottubefreezesonADR1and2ADR3wasnormalbutyoumust
comparecaptains,thestandbyandtheF/Oairspeed.YouaretemptedtothinkitisUndueActivationofAlpha
protection,butitisnot.ItisinfactaUnreliableSpeedIndication.ThecaptainsandF/Oairspeedwillbein
alphaprotrangebutthestandbyairspeedisnormal.Itisgreattrainingandyouthengettoexperimentabit
aftertheprocedureiscompleted.Thenyoudoahighaltitudetakeoffstallandapproachstallrecognitionand
recovery.Aftertheapproachstallrecoverydoagoaroundtocleanitup.RTOthentoaneventualevacuation
onceobjectiveinformationisobtained.Agreatsimsessionwithanexcellentinstructor.Itwasalsonot10

flightwarningcomputer(FWC1)ECAM.Didcomputerreset,butcouldnotreset,perfollowup.Flewthearrival
intoWashingtonDC,ILSrunway1inop,RNavinuse,weather400overcast,visibility1mileonthedescent
ELAC1failsandwouldnotreset,makingtheRNAVrunway1perequipmentrequirementsunusable,divertedto
WashingtonDulles,ILSrunway1R.
Spots:LAX25R,windshearontakeoffandwindshearonlanding.Thennoisehigh,noselowrecoveries.Then
repositionedtoDFW,atflightlevel350toflytheBRDJETwoRNAVarrivalrunway35center,cleardirectLETHR
todescendviatheRNAVarrival35R.Someoftheairspeedsonarrivalwerenotcorrect,youhavetointervene
withCAMIprocedures.ThenrepositiontoJacksonHole(KJAC)runway19ILSapproach,hadtolandonthefirst
1000feetoftherunwayandstayleftofcenterlinetoavoidthe"MooseLodge",thenbacktocenterline.Also
didgoaroundsat50feet.ThenrepositiontoReno(KRNO)runway16R.V1cutflyingtheengineoutSIDrunway
16R.RepositiontoLAXrunway25R,didatakeoffwithflexthrust,noflextemperature,norunwaydatato
demoRETARDRETARDscenario.BothtakeoffandthenanRTOinthisRETARDscenario.Thenfinishedupwith
