Our 100 Year Celebration Continues

What a beautiful turnout! More than 150 Chamber members and very special guests
enjoyed our recent Gala on the Greene thanks to our Presenting Sponsor ArcelorMittal.
The setting as you heard (or hopefully experienced) was the historic grounds of the
National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum. Tours were given of the museum, Terracina and
Graystone Mansion. Victory Brewing Company
provided tastings of our very own brew, Cheers to
100 Years, and Harrys the Neighborhood Place
offered complimentary wine and spirits to all
guests. Everyone enjoyed the delicious food from John Serock Catering,
Triple Fresh Catering and finished the evening with coffee from Fuel City Cafe.
We would like to thank our guest speakers, Greg DePedro, Coatesville Flower Shop;
Jeff March, Citadel; and Scott Huston, National Iron & Steel Heritage Museum. Together
with our President and master of ceremonies, John H. Lymberis, these individuals
helped us celebrate yesterday and envision tomorrow here in western Chester County.
One more chance is occurring to capture the rich and impactful history of our Chambers
last 100 years....Dont miss the Annual Dinner on November 10th at the

Members Doing Business Together

My coworker recently had a severe stroke and she
was not able to continue to handle the familys
financials which included the annual filing of their
joint tax return. They really needed some guidance
and asked for my advice on who they should have handle their taxes.
They let me know that money was tight due to heavy medical bills. I
immediately thought of fellow Board member, Bill Shaw, and the
Volunteer Income Tax
Assistance (VITA) run by Life
Transforming Ministries.
I gave my coworker and her
husband Bills contact info and
they were overwhelmed by
the level of help both he and
the VITA volunteers provided.
This was one less thing they
had to worry about which
helped the family
Bill Shaw (Life Transforming Ministries &
tremendously. I will continue
VITA) and Mike Guyer ( Fulton Bank)
to refer clients to VITA as well as
volunteer myself in the near
future come tax season! Bill gives credit to the volunteers who gave
thousands of hours in 2016. Its a blessing for us to be able to serve
people who need assistance at tax time, and our volunteers should be
commended for all they do to help their neighbors overcome the
anxiety of tax time, Bill added.

Sadsburyville Village Enhancement Project

An 11 year project is now set and ready to begin. This is an improvement project to help our village
slow and control the traffic and provide a safe, unique and more aesthetic place for our community.
The Village Enhancement Project will start on June 20, 2016 with the initial preparation for the
project. Breaking ground will begin sometime in early August with construction of the streetscape
located on Lincoln Highway between Octorara Road and
Independence Way. Some of the details of construction include:
sidewalks, crosswalks, curb extensions, traffic islands and tree
planting to name a few.
We are planning a ground breaking ceremony that will take place
on Friday September 9 at 10 am at the intersection of Business
Route 30 and Old Wilmington Road. Attendees will be convening
on the porch of Harrys the Neighborhood Place. Refreshments
will be served following the ceremony.
A completion date for the project is set for October 29, 2016.
Sadsbury Township is pleased to be a sponsor of this project.

Boy Scouts to Move to Exton

By Charles E. Rogers, Jr., Scout Executive
Chester County Council, BSA

Ribbon Cutting for

Fresh2You Mobile Market

Back in April, business and civic leaders joined the leaders of

Chester County Council, Boy Scouts of America for the public
launch of a $5 million capital campaign to construct a
Program, Activity & Resource Campus (PARC) on 28 acres
along Business Rt. 30 in Exton.

The Fresh2You Mobile Market began in 2015 as a pilot

program operating in a very small area of the county in
mainly just Coatesville and Honey Brook. At that time, the
Chester County Food Bank also used its own truck and a
pop-up tent.

Scout Executive Charlie Rogers announced that this was the

first program property that the Scouts have acquired since
the 1920s. This is going to be a game-changer for Scouting
in Chester County, stated Rogers, It will enhance the

A new custom-built truck with a wrap design by Miller

Designworks and outfitted by E. L. Carpenter will allow the
Food Bank to transport fresh foods directly to 10 sites in the
area and set up remote marketplaces to serve the
community. The entire back third of the truck is a massive
refrigeration unit, said Roberta Cosentino, coordinator of
Fresh2You.
Pastured eggs, fresh produce and healthful dried grains and
legumes will be offered at every market site. Fresh2You
seeks to also educate the public about cooking and nutrition
by providing tasty samples and healthy recipes for
customers.

volunteer experience
for our 2,700 adult
leaders and it will
enhance the Scouting
experience for our
5,800 Scouts.
The PARC will
complement programs already in place at Horseshoe Scout
Reservation. Council President Harry Alberts reported that
close to $3 million of the $5 million goal has been raised and
the fundraising team is working hard to secure the remaining
commitments by the end of the year.
A seamless combination of indoor and outdoor space will
create an environment unparalleled for the training and
program delivery to the Scouts and their leaders turning a
vacant lot into a vibrant new Scouting wonderland. The team
building adventure center will help Scouts and middle school
students learn the valuable lessons of cooperation and
mutual respect to achieve a common goal.
A strong Scouting program improves communities,
strengthens families, provides life changing experiences for
youth and gives us all a brighter hope for the future. The
PARC will strengthen Scouting in Chester County for
generations to come. To find out more about this exciting
project visit www.cccbsa.org/parc.

Third Quarter 2016

We are so excited to have this truck on the road, said Larry Welsch,
executive director of the Chester County Food Bank.

While the Mobile Market accepts all forms of payment

cash, credit and debit the Food Bank also seeks to help
customers with food assistance benefits to stretch their food
budgets. Households shopping with SNAP/EBT earn matching
dollars, known as Veggie Bucks, that can be spent on
future purchases of fruits and vegetables. The Mobile Market
also accepts PA Farmers Market Nutrition Program vouchers,
which some low income seniors and mothers receiving WIC
benefits can use to buy fruits and vegetables grown in
Pennsylvania.

Amazon Video Direct

By Judith Lee

Recently Amazon debuted a new video upload service called

Amazon Video Direct that allows users to post videos to its
website and earn money from advertising, royalties and
other sources, putting the company in direct competition
with Googles YouTube. Amazons only requirements are that
the videos be high definition and have closed-captioning for
the hearing impaired.
The swelling online video ad market and the growing number
of online viewers are spurring everyone from social media
giants like Facebook to newer upstarts like Vessel to go after
video creators and woo them with ever more advantageous
deals.
Interestingly, Amazons new proposition isnt that much more
financially appealing than YouTubes: content creators will
receive either 55% of revenues from rentals or sales of
videos, or $0.15 per hour streamed. But the fact that it is
giving creators a great deal of flexibility and empowerment
to determine how and where their stuff is streamed.
YouTubers have long complained about the power that the
Google-owned company wields over them. So even if
Amazon isnt offering to print money for creators, selling AVD
as a self-service platform is a way for it to amplify the
message that its putting creators first.

Early
adopters
say uploading videos to Amazon
is more cumbersome and timeintensive than on other video
sites: Uploaders must include
their credit card and social
security number, and videos must be captioned (Amazon
offers a fee-based service that will build caption files for each
video). And videos dont appear immediately as they do on
YouTube, Facebook, or Vimeo: The company says it will take
3-5 days before your video appears online.
So what is Amazon thinking? Something like, If we can have
customers engage with our video content, they will spend
more time shopping. The platform can also deepen
Amazons relationships with its sellers. Small businesses, say,
can create marketing videos or clips that tell their story (or
even just creative content) and then drive viewers back to
their retail page.
Its not likely Amazon is not going to run YouTube, which has
a decade of experience on its competitors, out of business.
But if the real end goal is to capture a few spare minutes of
its customers attention, and encourage a new subscription
to Amazon Prime or a retail purchase, then its on its way to
winning.

Joint Chamber Golf Challenge...We WON!!!!

Thank you to the Downingtown-Thorndale Chamber of
Commerce who organized our annual joint networking event
at Ingleside Golf Club to have a different twist this year...the
Chamber Challenge. Teams from both chambers played 5
holes and scores were tallied...and WCCCC won the cup!

We will continue this tradition each year and pass the

winning cup from chamber to chamber. Thanks to everyone
who came out and networked making the event enjoyable for
all. A special thanks to Jim Baer & Ingleside Golf Club for the
great food provided by Pronto Bistro (Ruffinis).
Remember all residents in Chester County can play at

Carver Court Added to National Registry of Historic Places

By State Representative Harry Lewis Jr.

As a result of work that Jane Kennedy and I did, a 1942-44

housing development in Chester County has been added to
the National Registry of Historic Places. Carver Court, a
mid-century modern complex in Middle Pickering, was
designed by giants of modern architecture Louis Kahn,
Oskar Stonorov and George Howe.
My father worked at Lukens Steel, so my family had a home
in Carver Court. The complex had a tremendous
community spirit, and my siblings and I loved growing up
there. I was honored to work to add Carver Court to the
National Registry of Historic Places, and I thank Jane
Kennedy, who has been instrumental in assisting with the
effort.

Carver Court,
originally
named
Foundry
Street
Defense
Housing, was
designed as
part of a
federal
program to
provide housing for African-American steel workers and
their families to support the World War II defense industry.
It includes nearly 90 one- and two-story homes.
A walking tour of Carver Court will be offered by the
Chester County Board of Commissioners as part of the
series to explore the countys heritage. Tours will be held
on Thursday, Aug. 11, beginning at 5:30 p.m.; the last tour
will leave at 7 p.m. Members of the public are asked to
meet at 80 Foundry St. in Coatesville.
