ACADEMIC ADMINISTRATION
Academic Programmes of the Institute are governed by Rules and Regulations as approved by the
Senate, which is the highest Academic body of this Institute. The Senate continuously monitors
these programmes and makes appropriate modifications/improvements from time to time. This
booklet gives comprehensive information on the existing Rules & Regulations about the M.
Tech./M. Phil./M. Des./M. Mgt./DIIT Programmes.
The academic system is semester based and hence the students are required to follow certain
procedures and meet certain academic requirements each semester.
It is in the interest of the student that he/she should be fully familiar with the academic systems of
this Institute. Particular attention should be paid to the schedule and structure of coursework and
project work, the assessment procedure and the rules governing conduct and assessment of these
activities.
The academic performance is monitored by the Postgraduate Academic Performance Evaluation
Committee (PGAPEC), which also reviews status of individuals after reviewing their performance.
PROGRAMME COMMITTEES
The Institute offers Postgraduate Programmes in various areas (Table1). The following sections
provide the details of the programmes and set of rules governing them.
MASTERS HANDBOOK
P a g e | 10
In order to keep pace with the rapid developments in science and technology and also to keep in
view the requirements of the nation and the aspirations of students, it is imperative that the
academic programmes of the Institute are reviewed continuously. The
Postgraduate Programmes Committee (PGPC) is entrusted with this responsibility. It deliberates
upon academic proposals received from the various Departmental Postgraduate Committees
((DPGCs), Interdisciplinary Programmes Committees (IDPCs), School Postgraduate Committees
(SPGCs) and Postgraduate Committees for Centre (PGCs). Based on its deliberations, it makes
suitable recommendations to the Senate for its approval.
FACULTY ADVISORY SYSTEM
The advisory system plays a very important role in a flexible curriculum of the type offered under
the various programmes of the Institute. The choice of courses being very wide, and considerable
flexibility in these programmes being a characteristic feature, students normally need guidance to
formulate a meaningful and well-knit programme. On joining the Institute each student is assigned
a Faculty Advisor or a group of Faculty Advisors. He/she is expected to consult his/her Faculty
Advisor on all matters relating to his/her in semester and end semester academic performance and
the course workload he/she may take in the particular semester. The students are advised to contact
the Faculty Advisors for advice about courses within the framework of the norms laid down for the
purpose. For the students project, his/her supervisor automatically becomes a Co-faculty Advisor
and often takes over most of the role played by the Faculty Advisor after the Supervisor student
assignment is made. For further registration for courses, the students should consult their project
supervisor also.

GENERAL INFORMATION
REGISTRATION
On joining the Institute, every student is required to plan his/her academic programme in
consultation with a faculty advisory group of the department/ IDP/ school/ centre in which
the student is admitted.
The registration for each semester is carried out through the computerized Online
Registration programme. This registration is mandatory for all students, and they must
register themselves on the prescribed dates announced from time to time. Every student
must register in each semester until he/she completes the programme.
All students have to clear the institute and hostel dues before Registration.
If a student does not register for a regular semester (Autumn or Spring) without prior
written permission of PGAPEC, his/her name is likely to be struck off from the roll list of
MASTERS HANDBOOK
P a g e | 14
the Institute and he/she may not normally be readmitted. To obtain prior permission, the
student must apply to PGAPEC at least one month in advance of the date of registration.
The faculty advisory group is authorized to carry out the course registration and also
adjustments as specified later. However, once the student is registered for the project work,
the project supervisor also acts as a co-faculty advisor and assumes most of the
responsibilities of the faculty advisor.
Along with the credit courses, a student is normally allowed to take a maximum of two
audit courses per semester, with the consent of the project guide/faculty advisor, as
appropriate.
A student is not permitted to re-register for a course, which he has completed with AU, DD
or higher grades.
Any student who concurrently registers for any postgraduate degree at another organization
will get automatically deregistered at the Institute.
SUBMISSION OF FINAL YEAR MARK SHEETS/PROVISONAL
CERTIFICATES OF THEIR QUALIFYING DEGREE BY THE
MASTER'S STUDENTS
All postgraduate students should ordinarily submit their certificates latest by 30thSeptember
/30th January respectively when admitted in the autumn / spring Semester of a given
academic year, after joining the institute.
The students who are unable to submit their certificate by these dates, should apply for
extension along with an undertaking stating the due date for submission, giving proper
reasons on a prescribed form to be developed for the purpose.
Even if a student does not submit the certificate until the commencement of the endsemester examination, he /she would be allowed to appear in the examination. However,
the results of such a student shall be withheld until the required documents are produced.
Cases of students who do not submit the certificates after the first semester will be reported
to the PGPC and the Senate for further consideration and decisions/actions.
COURSE ADJUSTMENTS
Within the period prescribed in the academic calendar, a student can substitute one or more
courses by others. For this purpose, the student has to carry out course adjustment in consultation
with his/ her faculty advisory group.
MASTERS HANDBOOK
P a g e | 15
INSTITUTE ELECTIVES
The PGPC shall recommend one list of possible courses, which could be taken by a maters student
as an institute elective, in the routine course of registration. A choice of institute elective among the
courses in this list will not require special approval from the faculty advisor and/ or supervisor, as
appropriate, or from the convener, DPGC/ PGPC/ IDPC. However, a masters student shall also be
permitted to opt for any other course offered at the postgraduate level in an academic unit other
than his/her own, with sufficient credits assigned to it, as an institute elective. To exercise this
option the explicit approval of his/her faculty Advisor and/ or his/ her supervisor, as
appropriate, together with that of the convener, DPGC/ PGPC/ IDPC of his/her academic unit
shall be required.
R&D PROJECTS
Students with adequate background may be permitted by faculty advisor or supervisor to replace 6
or 12 course credits with R&D projects (distinct from M.Tech/M.Phil project). If the option is for
12 credits, it can either be taken together in one semester or split into two stages of 6 credits each,
taken over the two semesters. One cannot register for more than 6 R&D project credits in the first
semester. The projects will be evaluated as per norms set by faculty advisor or supervisor and will
be awarded letter grades.
DUAL DEGREE PROGRAMMES
IIT Bombay seeks to get the best students to join its doctoral programmes. It is particularly helpful,
if students who have obtained an M Tech / M Phil Degree from one of the IITs; in particular, IIT
Bombay, could continue into a Ph.D. programme soon after the M Tech. It is even more helpful
and productive, if the student has commenced working on a research proposal during the M Tech,
which can immediately be built upon for the purpose of a doctoral thesis. Further, when admitting
a doctoral student, one would ideally like to have a thorough knowledge of his/ her ability to
complete a programme leading to the award of the Ph.D. Degree.
By the first stage of evaluation of the masters dissertation, promising and motivated students in the
masters (M Tech/ M Phil) Programmes can be encouraged to move to a Dual Degree M Tech/ M
Phil + PhD programme in a seamless manner - with the concurrence of the proposed doctoral
supervisor (normally expected to be the same as the Supervisor during the first stage of Masters'
Dissertation, but not mandatory) and the PG committee of the concerned academic unit. For more

International Opportunities
Post-graduation program introduces graduate student to the pragmatic world of learning as well as
solidifying the theoretical foundation. Entering the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay , even
as a master student enable you to venture into the world class research and collaboration going on
in your field at this moment. Apart from undergraduates and doctoral students, being a master
student also gives you adequate number of opportunities to avail international exposure. The
following are excerpts about some of the scholarships/fellowship offered in the last year.
1. DAAD IIT-Masters Sandwich Scholarship Programme
An exclusive scholarship provided by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Services) to spend 6
months in Germany to complete the project work under a German guide in a Technical University
there. This involves half of the masters project work to be accomplished in the labs of a German
university including a fully funded research subsidy and a reasonable monthly stipend.
Timeline- The scholarship is generally announced around the month of January each year with a
deadline in March.
Regarding selection of German guide- The preliminary requirement to avail the scholarship which
is selecting a suitable German professor according to the research project should be done well in
advance to keep the procedure smooth. This can only be done by consulting with the IIT professor
here and contacting the German universities early enough to get hold of a good research problem.
More detailed information regarding DAAD IIT-MSP can be found in www.daaddelhi.org/en.
2. Other programmes
National University of Singapore (NUS), Erasmus-Mundus Programme (for universities in Europe)
and other universities enrol students in exchange programmes. Further information can be availed
from the institute international relations website www.ir.iitb.ac.in. To get all round information

Ph.D. in rest of the Europe
Europe, particularly Germany, France and Switzerland attract a good number of students from
India. Most of the European universities employ two ways for floating PhDs:
i) Traditional approach: It involves identifying a supervisor at a University who is willing to guide
your research. It also requires great personal commitment towards identifying the Ph.D. topic and
then conducting research.
ii) Structured approach: It is similar to US system, in which you apply to university directly.
Most of the European universities award Ph.D. in English, so naturally during application they ask
for proof of good command over English, by way of TOEFL or IELTS scores, additionally there can
be requirement of GRE.
Ph.D. in Australia and Singapore
Most universities in Oceania and Singapore follow a system similar to US universities. Again GRE,
TOEFL or IELTS hold importance in admission procedure. Universities like NUS, NTU or IITBMonash Research Academy also consider GATE scores.
Funding
Almost everywhere tuition for Ph.D.s can waived off and employment can be secured as a teaching
assistant/research assistant (for which a good score in TOEFL is crucial). Apart from that,
universities also provide various fellowships. In Germany, funding can also be secured through
DAAD. Apart from that, there are various scholarships like Rhodes, Fulbright etc. that one can
avail, but they have their own criterion for selection and the standards are generally high.
Rankings
Any good ranking index can be referred to, some examples are Shanghai, QS, and Guardian etc.
The ranking vary from discipline to discipline. Also, while applications one should look not only to
rankings but also to faculty and research groups of the concerned department/school.

In the 55 year long journey, IIT Bombay has established its image as one of the premier research
and educational Institute. There are many major research projects running around the campus,
which are intended to make a difference in social as well as Research community. As IIT Bombay
dreams for more cutting edge research, IRCC is the main body for providing various administrative
and logistical supports to R&D activities. Industrial Research and Consultancy Centre (IRCC) was
established in the year 1975 as the unit responsible for managing and coordinating all activities
related to research and development at the Institute including facilitating interactions with external
agencies, setting up simplified processes for financial, manpower and intellectual property
management, licensing activities and scheme for incentivizing researchers. The working of IRCC
can be briefly described in following points,
Providing infrastructure, equipment and staff related support in conducting any research activity
Maintaining various central facilities within the campus. These state of the art facilities are very
unique and advance.
Providing diverse funding to researchers and also gives exposure to collaborate with other
researchers within and outside the country
Maintaining a proper link between research on campus and demands from various industries. It
is also instrumental in commercialization of various projects and bonding agile industry-academia
partnerships.
Handling the Intellectual Property (IP) policy for the institute. It takes care of the diverse
interests of the various stakeholders, i.e. the government, public, researchers, faculty, sponsors etc.
IRCC ADVISORY COMMITTEE
The IRCC Advisory Committee (IAC) has been set up to advice the Dean (R&D) on issues related
to the activities, policies and initiatives taken by IRCC for facilitating R&D and incentivizing
researchers of our institute. The committee generally holds meeting once every two months. Faculty
from different academic units of the institute, ex-officio Professor-in-Charge, CEP/QIP, ex-officio
Professor-in-Charge SINE and Head CRNTS/SAIF constitute the IAC along with Dean (R&D),
Associate Dean (R&D) and members from the technical section of IRCC.
Facilities to students:

CONSULTANCY PROJECTS
IIT Bombay has nurtured a vision to be the fountainhead of new ideas and of innovators in
technology and science. This dream gives an opportunity to any external agency/industry to ask
solution for almost any type of problem/need in almost every discipline subject of engineering,
technology and science. The institute handles all such external requests through its faculty/
scientist/ technical staff and IRCC moderates all these activities within a framework of various
standard terms and conditions.
IRCC has four sections i.e. Accounts, Administrative, Software and Technical section. The software
section helps in maintaining Online Information System (DRONA). This system links student/
faculty involved in R&D activities to various facilities and information from IIT Bombay.
IRCC has been instrumental in developing online processes for managing consulting and
sponsored projects, project staff recruitment, project accounts, patenting and agreements. IRCC
aims to simplify processes and allow faculty and students to focus on research. IRCC can be
reached at www.ircc.iitb.ac.in or at http://www.iitb.ac.in under Research and Development link.
Information related to IP and patent may be viewed at http://drona.ircc.iitb.ac.in/faculty/ipr.jsp

internally & improved until perfection. The business plan is next reviewed by an external panel of
experts and based on their suggestions, the idea will get incubated. The ideas are judged on the
following aspects: Economic viability, influence on society, strategic value.
SINE provides three kinds of incubation: regular incubation provides the basic office amenities at a
subsidized cost. Virtual incubation for ideas that dont require an office for functioning. Preincubation, for ideas that are in the initial stages that need validation and testing. In addition to
this, SINE provides access to professional services at various stages growth including the services of
lawyers, accountants, human resource. Besides the infrastructural and business support provided
at SINE, one gets access to lab facilities at SINE, Tinkerers lab and other labs in the institute.
Resources shared by the companies at SINE include meeting and conference rooms equipped with
projectors, audio/video conference facilities and office automation services like photocopying
machines, scanners and printers.

OBJECTIVES:
The Womens cell of IIT Bombay was established in 2002, in accordance with the Supreme Court
ruling of 1997 on the issue of sexual harassment in workplace. Its objectives are:
To uphold the dignity of women at IITB
To facilitate a gender-sensitive and congenial working environment at IITB so that women,
whether employee or student, are not subjected to gender-specific discrimination or sexual
harassment.
The issue of sexual harassment is gender neutral. However, enforcing it through law, is applicable
only to women at workplace. The flowchart below shows how cases of sexual harassment are
resolved.
SEXUAL HARASSMENT DEFINED
Please note that the Supreme Court of India defines sexual harassment as unwelcome sexual
behavior, whether directly or by implication, such as through
(1) Physical contact and advances.
(2) Demand or request for sexual favors.
(3) Sexually colored remarks (this includes colored jokes in a mixed company, or a classroom, or
even within hearing distance of a female member of the community).
(4) Showing pornography.
(5) Any other unwelcome physical, verbal or nonverbal conduct of sexual nature.
Except where such an act amounts to a specified offence under the Indian Penal Code (which then
has to be dealt with by the Police under applicable law), a victim of sexual harassment can either
approach the Womens Cell or the Dean (SA) or the security office, either for advice or redressal.
It is important to note that, what constitutes sexual harassment is defined by the victim and not by
the perpetrator.

SARC (Student Alumni Relations Cell) - The core team of SARC has a sizable representation
from the PG students community with members from both the masters and doctoral students
present. As work done by SARC affects the welfare of IIT Bombay, the maturity and the experience
of a postgraduate student comes in handy. We feel that, with a growing population of postgraduate
alumni, the best way to connect with them would be through PG students. The fact that
postgraduate student volunteers will enter the team directly as "Coordinators" instead of
"Organizers" is also noteworthy. (Note: IIT B student body hierarchy is Coordinator > Core team
member > Coordinator > Organizer).
InsIghT- Chief Editors- 2 Posts, IIT-BBC (Overall Co-ordinator)- 1 post; IIT-BBC Convener -6
posts.
Techfest - Entirely managed by students of IIT Bombay with a three-tier team structure. The
core committee consists of 23 members comprising of 1 Overall Coordinator at the helm and 22
Managers who overlook all the aspects and activities of Techfest. While organizing an event of
such a magnitude, Techfest gives an opportunity to acquire leadership, communication, and teamwork and time-management skills while making friends for a lifetime. Over the years, PGs have
been a valuable asset to the Techfest team. We expect similar participation from PG community in
this edition too. Postgraduates can join the Techfest team as Coordinators, Techfest
2016, thereby helping participants look into the problem and its broader aspects by giving their
valuable views. We invite all PG freshmen to join the Techfest family.
Abhyudyay - All are invited to join us as volunteers in our campaign. Do not step back if you
have your own initiatives, the team will be glad to help you out and support you.
Institute Placement Team (IPT) - Placement Managers, Company Coordinators,
Associate Company Coordinators, Associate Placement Coordinator and Department Placement
Coordinator who carry out the entire process of placements here which includes calling companies,
organizing workshops and conducting tests/PI.
The Sports Club, Cultural Clubs (literary, dramatics, dance etc) at IITB students Gymkhana have
got PG nominees where one can apply. Institute Cultural Council, Institute Sports Council E-Cell
(Entrepreneurship Cell) also has PG participation.
Apart from these, there are umpteen opportunities at departmental level as PG Nominee,
Department Placement Coordinator and G. Sec of respective departments. Also during your stay at
hostels, you will get the Hostel Council which looks after the effective functioning of the Hostel
comprising of Hostel General Secretary, Warden Nominee and secretaries to look onto different
aspects.

completing the NSO. Great participation was observed last year and we expect the improvement in
the program this year.
The Structure of Sports Council
The sports council is headed by the General Secretary Sports who coordinates the activities of all
the Institute Secretaries of the various sports. The 15 Institute Secretaries are responsible for
conducting events related to their sports at the institute level. Between the Secretaries and the GS
Sports there are Nominees including one PG Nominee who is in charge of conducting all PG
Sports activities. You are encouraged to contact the Institute Secretaries for any query related to the
particular sport.
At the hostel level, there is a Sports Councillor (or Sports Co) who is supported in his activities by
Hostel Sports Secretaries (Sports Secy-s). In addition to them there are many Clubs and conveners
who organize creative events in their sports activity throughout the year.
At the department level, there are Sports Representatives for each department elected through intradepartmental elections. These representatives are points of contacts for the Institute Sports Council
and the PG Sports representatives.
Inter-Hostel Culture
IIT Bombay has a history of healthy inter hostel rivalry. The Inter Hostel Sports General
Championship is the biggest all year-round event at the institute level. Event consists of 20 different
sports where all hostel fight for Overall General Championship. In 2014, 15 Boys Hostels & 4 Girls
Hostels took part in the fiercely competitive General Championship. Participation is generally huge
in each of the GCs, so much so that, the whole Sports complex gets enveloped in a sporting
atmosphere.
Inter IIT Championship
It is The Holy Grail of every guy or girl who ever picked up a racquet, kicked a ball or scored three
pointers. Representing IITB in the Inter IIT Sports Meet is the Ultimate Honor. Held in December
over a duration of 7 days in one of the IITs, each of the 15 IITs arrive with their contingents and
compete fiercely for the individual championships for each sport (Athletics, Aquatics, Badminton,
Basketball, etc etc). Other than top three in individual sports, there is also the General
Championship. IIT Bombay won the General Championship most times. In recent past, IITB won
Championship for 3 consecutive years 07-09 and in 2012. Inter IIT was first held in IIT Bombay.
Last year too, IIT Bombay hosted prestigious 50th Inter IIT Sport Meet. This year, Inter IIT Meet is
in IIT Madras and new IITs will be participating for the first time. Girls have separate Inter IIT
Championship meet organized parallally with boys. Girls of IIT Bombay won the prestigious Inter

Selection trials for the teams are held for each sport around October - November. The selected
players are a part of the Inter IIT Training Camp held from 1st December to the date of departure
for the meet. Based on the performances during camp, the best possible team is chosen by the
coaches and the captain.
The Sports Culture: Training Camps and Championships:
Besides NSO, IITB offers beginners training camps in all sports for which you can register. Notices
for the camps are typically put up a week in advance. Follow IITB Sports page if you dont want to
miss any opportunity. Seats are usually limited, so register at the earliest.
The Institute also organizes IFL (Institute Footer League) and Cricmania in the Spring Semester on
the lines of the EPL and IPL with managers and a bidding ceremony. Leagues for Badminton,
Basketball, Hockey, Lawn Tennis, TT and Volleyball are also organized over the year. One can
register as a player or a Manager!
The Institute Sports council also organizes screenings of important matches/games for almost every
sport, be it Rafa vs Federer, an El-classico or an India-Pak match you can catch it on the big screen
with your friends :)
Sports@Leisure
Apart from these formal coaching camps and classes, feel free to turn up on the sports field and
play the way you like with or without your friends. Some timings are reserved for faculty and
institute team practices and NSO classes. As IIT provides the state-of-art facilities, a lot of care has
to be taken in maintenance. So, proper equipment and attire are must for playing. Specifically, in
Badminton, Tennis and Squash, you must wear non-marking, gum sole shoes. Swimming pool also
requires proper costume which can be bought from swimming pool itself. Recreational trips are also
organized every month to experience trekking, water rafting, rappelling. Cycling events are
organized on alternate weekends to some great locations. You will find out more details in due
time. You can issue squash balls, badminton shuttles and racquets on your I-card from the SAC
office and storeroom. Contact Institute Sports Secretary or use ask-a-secy facility to know more
about anything related to particular sport.
Most hostels have a lounge which has a carrom table, table tennis table, a gymnasium maybe a
fooseball table and a pool table. You can issue the gear for these from the watchman against your Icard. You will also find people playing cricket, football and volleyball in the fields between the

PG CULT
"PG Cult is the annual cultural festival targeted exclusively for
the postgraduate community of IIT Bombay (or PG junta in
short). Since its inception in the year 2008, this would be the 8th
edition of this cultural extravaganza.
The events spread across 9 genres -3 performing arts: Dance,
Music and Dramatics and 5 nonperforming arts: Fine Arts,
Literary Arts, Speaking Arts, Design, Photography and Film &
Media. Interspersed throughout the calendar year, the PG
Cultural Council headed by the PG Cultural Nominee along with
the PG Coordinators and Conveners for each genre organizes
several workshops to cater to the varied tastes and skills of the
multitalented PGs of IITB.
The competitions under PG Cult are based on an interSiddharth Kshatriya
siddharth01692@gmail.com
departmental format held in two phases one in each semester.
The competitions in the first phase involve mostly solo or dual
events which involve comparatively low preparatory events while those on the second phase involve
group competitions such as group dance and music band events which are more time demanding.
Considering the comparatively greater academic load faced by the PG community as compared to
the UGs, the first phase is held around mid-September, one week after the mid-semester exams of
the odd semester. The second phase is then held in the second week of March. These dates are
decided keeping in mind the busy schedule of the PGs to give them enough leg-space to prepare of
the events while fulfilling the strenuous demands of the curriculum.
In the last edition of the PG Cult, the PG Cultural Council initiated a lecture series by eminent
personalities where we had Dr. Devdutt Pattanaik, renowned author and mythologists who spoke
with us. This year too we plan to have several of those lectures by experts from a gamut of areas.
Also to be in tune with the new lifestyle and fashion club established last year, there was also a
bonus attraction of a flagship fashion show designed and choreographed in entirety by the PGs.
This along with the power packed performances made phase II a houseful event with the
convocation hall packed to its full capacity of 2000+ audience.
So junta, what is that breed of cult that is lying dormant inside you? Is it the mighty pen of a writer
or the fire guzzling voice of an orator? What drives you more? The melodic strumming of a guitar
or the twists and curves of dancing? Let it out. Show them all what you are beyond the humdrum
affair of your laboratory or the drool of lectures. As Shamur once said, Let the Music play, Let the
Music take Control."

Technical Activities
Ideas are dime a dozen. People who implement are
priceless. Who doesnt get ideas; ideas to change the
world, ease things out, help the society, to break rules
etc. However theres a difference between the hoard of
ideators and the few, including the likes of Tesla,
Feynman etc, who realize the ideas. And the difference
is the habit of doing things hands-on.
IIT Bombay is a beautiful place; with people of different
interests, ready to help and mentor; facilities to pursue
technical activities and enough opportunities to
showcase your work. Its community of students across
departments, year and UGs and PGs, that work on

ABHYASIKA
Abhyasika is a volunteer-driven initiative run by students of the institute. Volunteer teachers teach
foundation skills and subjects for children coming from low-income families living in and around
the IITB campus. While most of the children go to Maharashtra State Board municipal or low-tier
schools, a few of our students are school drop-outs who are aiming to gain tenth certification
through the National Indian Open School board. Volunteers generally teach once a week, although
the most enthusiastic teachers often end up teaching multiple times! Classes run every
evening Monday to Sunday at two centres- one in the nearby Phulenagar chawl area (near YP gate)
and the other on campus. If anyone is interested in volunteering or is curious to find out more,
please do write to abhyasikaiitb@gmail.com

ISCP
Institute Students Companion Programme, (ISCP) has been founded in order to cater to the
IIT Bombay Post-graduate (PG) Students. Its primary objective is to develop an atmosphere of
cordial interaction among PG entrants with the PG Seniors in order to encourage flow of
information, sharing of knowledge and experiences amongst them. ISCP strives to aid the new
entrant in making a smooth transition to the campus life of IIT Bombay by allotting them a
senior student companion. New entrants can contact their assigned companion in order to
discuss their academic and non-academic issues.
ISCP provides a unique platform to both the companions and new students to develop a
friendly relation amongst them. This programme offers the companions an opportunity to
enhance their interpersonal as well as organizational skills. The new entrants also do not feel
apprehensive about coming to a new environment as they have someone to provide guidance
and listen to their concerns.
ISCP organizes various activities like orientation, workshops and talks in order to spread
awareness among the entrants regarding various academic, extra-curricular and career
opportunities available at the Institute. Student companions collectively identify the problems
of students through frequent interaction and organize various activities to solve them.

MEDIA CELL
The dissemination of scientific knowledge is as important as its creation. In the absence of media to
spread scientific knowledge, the loss incurred by the scientific community would have been
unimaginable. Most of the journals and scientific publications carry out this work efficiently.
However, the target audience of such journals and newsletters is highly specialized and their articles
are limited to a particular subject or branch, often narrowing down to a particular topic. Every year
in IIT Bombay faculty and students carry out breakthrough research and churn out huge number of
articles which are published in reputed international journals. Though this has earned IIT Bombay
a respectable position in the international scientific community, many of our countrymen remain in
oblivion of the efforts and achievements of one of the most sought after Technical Institute of
India, IIT Bombay, mostly due to unavailability of suitable media to distribute the information.
Hence in order to disseminate scientific information to general public the Science and Technology
Media cell was formed. The Science and Technology Media cell is a body functioning under Dean
R&D comprising faculty and students from different departments and programs, including, M.Scs,
B.Techs, M.Techs and PhDs. The media cell, with the help of its Faculty advisers, combs through
the research work done in IIT Bombay and selects the work with highest social impacts. The highly
complex information is then transformed into a popular science article keeping the essence of the
