Danger!
When working with the probe, hazards may arise from electric current / voltage.
Observe the following safety instructions to avoid the risk of an electric shock:
If you touch the head of the probe and electrically conducting parts, such as
machines or devices, simultaneously, voltage can be generated from possible
potential differences which is noticeable but non-hazardous.
Never spark wet or moist surfaces, since there is a risk of a short circuit!
Never spark without a sample!
When the excitation source is switched on, avoid any contact with the spark
electrode!
Before working at the head of the probe, e.g. for changing the electrode, always
switch off the excitation source.
Do not touch the sample during measurement!
During sparking, do not, under any circumstances, introduce a conducting
object into the proximity of the head of the probe!
During sparking, do not, under any circumstances, remove a conducting
object from the head of the probe!
With the spark hole open during sparking, do not, under any circumstances,
bring a part of your body into its immediate vicinity!
Warning! Hot surface!
Small and/or thin samples can become hot during sparking. During measurement of
small or thin samples, wear protective gloves!
Warning!
During the analysis of samples that do not cover the hole in the head plate of the probe
(e.g. wires), spark light can emerge. Your eyes can be blinded by the light and the
high-energy UV radiation can damage your eyes. Never look into the arc! Wear suitable
eye protection during work.
Warning!
During the analysis of samples that do not cover the hole in the head plate of the probe
(e.g. wires), the sound generated upon sparking (measuring) exits through the gap. For
sparking samples that do not cover the hole, wear ear protection.
Danger!
When measuring hazardous substances, there is a hazard from escaping gases or
vapours.
The operator must know what substances he is working with.
The operating company must provide for suitable protective measures (e.g.
exhaustion).

Excitation Source
Optics
The light from the plasma which is generated in the head of the probe hits the diffraction
grating and is split by this spectrum. Light with longer wavelengths is deflected
("diffracted") stronger than light with shorter wavelengths. This maps the emission
spectrum of the sample on light-sensitive detectors. To do so, the UVTouch uses the
latest generation of CCD line sensors featuring high sensitivity and long life. The optical
system operates in an argon atmosphere so that emission wavelengths shorter than
approx. 200 nm are not absorbed by air.
The UVTouch has two light paths through which the light reaches two different optical
systems: Firstly, the "direct light path", which is for short wavelengths that are measured
by the UV optical system in the UVTouch. Secondly, the "indirect light path" over optical
fibre to the base device, where the remaining spectrum is measured with a second
optical system. This construction allows optimisation of the light paths for certain specific
elements and applications. Due to the small light losses and a specific dazzle, the direct
light path is particularly suitable for analysing low element contents, while the indirect
path is preferably used for measuring higher contents.

5.3
When rolling up the hose, ensure that the bending diameter is at least 42 cm.
Installation
The basic instrument is installed as described in the operating instructions of the basic
instrument and ready for use.
Prerequisite
Note!
In spark mode, the instrument emits electromagnetic waves. This radiation can cause
radio interference. To minimise emitted interference, the instrument must be connected
and operated as specified in this manual. In the event of electromagnetic incompatibility,
the operating company may have to take additional measures.
The following procedures may contribute to minimising interference:
enlarging the distance to the "receivers" (power and signal/telecommunications
lines as well as radio receivers);
specific coordination with respect to other systems;
additional filtering for the power supply;
varying the chosen excitation parameters;
low-inductive earthing of the sample to be analysed;
and in special cases shielding of the entire instrument.
The initial installation of the instrument is carried out by customer service
representatives of Oxford Instruments Analytical GmbH and includes a complete
functional test of the instrument as well as operator training.

Note!
Avoid sparking the same point twice. The RSD value in the right column of the screen
(RSD: Relative Standard Deviation) is displayed after the third sparking and should be
less than or equal to 10 %.
If that is the case, carry out further sparkings.
The results of sparking with the greatest deviations from the average value
are deleted (average value display in the right column).
To delete individual sparkings, highlight the column by double-clicking and
click the "Delete" button.
Caution: Deletion cannot be undone!
7.
8.
Note!
For the other samples, the RSD value in the right column should be less than or equal
to 3 %.
After recalibration is completed ("Recalibration successful" note), proceed as follows to
check the recalibration factors:
1.
2.
3.
Note!
From the "Mode" menu bar and, in the following window, from the picklist, select
"Recalibration factors".
Confirm your selection with "OK". The analysis window with the recalibration
factors is displayed. All values in the "Factor" column should range between 0.5
and 2.0, ideally near 1.
The "offset.dat" file is in the program directory. Open the file (e.g. with the
editor).
With an ambient temperature of about 20 C, the values in the last line should
range between -10 and +10.
Values marked with an asterisk (*) can be ignored.
If factors and/or offset values are outside these ranges, please contact our local Oxford
Instruments Analytical GmbH service partner.
After putting into service and recalibration, back up the whole "Master" program
directory so that all relevant data can be recovered if required.
The customer is responsible for regular data backup. Oxford Instruments Analytical

7.1
Quick start
Analysing in spark mode (argon)
Argon quality
If the instrument has not been used during a prolonged period of time, the argon system
must be sufficiently purged with argon to avoid contamination. Used argon must contain
less than 5 ppm of O2 and H2O (argon for spectral analysis 99.998 % 99.999 %).
Analysis of some elements such as nitrogen or carbon is heavily affected by impurified
argon. With an argon quality of 4.6 (99.996 %), analysis may not be possible any more.
Further information about analysing nitrogen can be found in the operating instructions
of the basic instrument.
Sample preparation
The most critical part of spark analysis is the preparation of the sample.
The importance of sample preparation is often underestimated, although quality and
reliability of the analysis directly depend on it.
Since the spark discharge only evaporates material on the sample surface and does not
penetrate deep into the material, you also measure all impurities on the surface.
Dirt, oils, oxides and even fingerprints can disturb analysis and even prevent the
formation of plasma. In that case, you obtain a poor burn spot with very low luminous
efficacy ("white focal spot"). The result is a faulty analysis, that means the analysed
sample composition does not correspond to the actual composition.

7 Quick start
Prerequisites for
analysis
1.
2.
Note!
When you change the matrix (e.g. from iron to aluminium), replace the electrode
and brush (see chapter 10.5, page 57). Otherwise, analysis can be adulterated
by a contamination on the electrode or brush. Therefore, there are a separate
tungsten electrode and brush for every matrix.
The spacing between electrode tip and sample surface must be set with the
spacer (chapter 10.5.2, page 58).
The basic instrument has been commissioned as described in its operating
instructions.
All other required settings have been made at the basic instrument.
The UVTouch was put into service as described in chapter 6, page 17.
The surface/sample to be analysed has been prepared.
The excitation source is switched on on the basic instrument.
In the start screen of the UVTouch screen, select "Analysis".
In the "Select analysis program" window, select the matrix and the subprogram
and confirm your selection with "OK".
Hold the point of support of the head of the probe on the surface so that the surface
closes the probe head hole as tightly as possible. This is mainly the case if the point of
support is in the centre above the electrode.
3.
4.
To spark a surface (1, fig. 7-1), hold the UVTouch against the surface in a way
that the hole which is above the electrode completely covers the head of the
probe, if possible.
To make the sample adjustment easier, you can mount the rubber adapter
(available separately) to the head of the probe (chapter 13.3, page 73).
When measuring, press the head of the probe directly against the surface to
create the necessary equipotential bonding.

Version: 1.0GB/2012-06-11
UVTouch
7 Quick start
Note!
If the head of the probe is not placed correctly, there is a gap between the sample and
the head plate of the probe so that air from outside can enter the argon-purged analysis
volume (between electrode and sample) and adulterate analysis. At the same time, the
sound generated during sparking (measurement) exits through the gap more easily. A
sparking noise as low as possible is therefore a good criterion for an optimally placed
sample.
Warning!
During the analysis of samples that do not cover the hole in the head plate of the probe
(e.g. wires), spark light can emerge. Your eyes can be blinded by the light and the
high-energy UV radiation can damage your eyes. Never look into the arc! Wear a
suitable eye protection during work.
Warning!
During the analysis of samples that do not cover the hole in the head plate of the probe
(e.g. wires), the sound generated upon sparking (measuring) exits through the gap. For
sparking samples that do not cover the hole, wear ear protection.
Danger!
Risk of electric shock!
During sparking, do not, under any circumstances, introduce a conducting object into
the proximity of the probe head hole!
During sparking, do not, under any circumstances, remove a conducting object from
the probe head hole!
With the probe head hole open during sparking, do not, under any circumstances,
bring a part of your body into its immediate vicinity!
Note!
Before starting the spark process, ensure that the head plate of the probe is being
correctly held against the sample.
5.
6.
Start the analysis of the sample by pressing the "Start" button on the UVTouch.
The sparking proceeds automatically and the results are shown on the screen.
The flowcharts in the following chapter illustrate the sequence of analysis and
recalibration.

For
sparking samples that do not cover the hole wear ear protection.

Recalibration
Recalibration is a reset of the spectrometer with known samples. Recalibration is
required to compensate for changes in the spectral sensitivity due to contamination or
ageing of components so that the original calibration remains applicable during the
entire life of the instrument.
The recalibration is carried out with the WASLab software of the basic instrument and is
comprehensively described in the operating instructions of the basic instrument.
A brief description of recalibration is found in chapter 6.2, page 19.

Comparing grades
This chapter contains a description of the functions of grade identification by comparing
a sample of unknown composition with stored grade qualities in the database.
Note!
Basic settings for grade comparison are made in the WASLab software of the
basic instrument.
The instrument configuration is customer-specific. Therefore, the illustrations in
this chapter can deviate from what you see on your screen. The procedure is
the same for all grades in all matrices.
The grade is chosen from the database by the operator and after sparking the unknown
sample, the current analysis is compared to that of the chosen grade.
In the following example, we compare an unknown sample with stored grade
1.0401 C15.
1.
2.
3.
Set the basic settings for the grade comparison in the WASLab software (see
operating instructions of the basic instrument).
In the start screen of the UVTouch, open the matrix selection by clicking
"Analysis" (1, fig. 8-19).
In the "Select analysis program" window, select matrix and subprogram.
Since 1.0401 C15 is an iron alloy, select the "FE" matrix and confirm the
selection with "OK".
The "Analysis" window is displayed.
