Note:
Please write your lecture group on the front page of answer sheet. Attempt all questions.
Attempt all parts of the same question at the same place. Use of steam table is allowed.
Assume any missing data suitably.
Q. 1.
(a) What do you mean by thermodynamic equilibrium?

[2]

(b) It is necessary to store one krnol of methane at 300K in a cylinder of volume 0.065m3.
Determine the pressure using (i) Ideal gas equation of state and (ii) van der Waals equation of
state. Also, comment on the variation of pressure obtained using the above two equation of
states. The value of R = 8.314 kJ/kmol-K, a = 228.296 *10-3 Pa (m3/mol)2 and b = 0.043*10-3
m3/mol.

Q. 2.
(a) A system is taken through several processes as a result of which, final state of system is
identical with initial state. Calculate missing values of work done, internal energy change and
energy transferred as heat during the processes in table below:

(b) One kmol of an ideal gas with y =1.4 is compressed reversibly and adiabatically from 100
kPa and 300K to 500kPa and then it is cooled at constant pressure to the original temperature.
The gas is then restored initial pressure of 100 kPa by following a reversible and isothermal
process. Draw the neat diagram of the process and calculate the heat and work interaction for
each of the process. Also determine the net work done by gas and net energy transferred as
heat to the gas.
[3+1]
Q. 3.
A rigid and closed vessel is to be filled with wet steam at 1 bar pressure, such that upon
heating the system, it should pass through the critical point. Determine the quality and the
ratio of vapour volume to the liquid volume with which the vessel is to be initially filled.
Sketch a P-v diagram for the above process. Take Pc = 221.20 bar and 71 = 374.15 C

Q. 4.
Steam at 3 bar and 250C is cooled at constant volume unti I it reaches at 80C. Answer the
following:
(a) An engineer claims that during above cooling process the steam will become saturated
steam at certain temperature. Will you support the claim? If not, then why not? If yes, then
estimate the temperature of saturated steam.
(b) What is the heat transferred per kg of steam in cooling from 250 C to 80*C?
(c) Sketch the process qualitatively on a P-v diagram.

Q. 5.
(a) Derive the general energy equation for a single stream of fluid entering and single stream
of fluid leaving an adiabatic control volume without any shaft work.
15]
(b) Is the process (shown in figure) steady state? Why or why not?

Attempt all questions sequentially.
Answer all the parts of a question at same place.
Assume suitable data and draw the neat diagrams, if required.
Steam table is allowed.

1 a) A gas is contained in a vertical, frictionless piston

cylinder device. The piston has a mass of 4 kg and a
= 95 kPa

cross-sectional area of 35 cm2. A compressed spring

above the piston exerts a force of 60 N on the piston.

If the atmospheric pressure is 95 kPa, determine the

= 15 cm2

absolute pressure inside the cylinder.

b) A system containing an ideal gas undergoes a thermodynamic cycle A-B-C-D-E-A
composed of the following processes:
A-B: Isobaric compression;
B-C: Isothermal expansion till the volume gets 1.5 times the volume of state A;
C-D: Isochoric process till the temperature becomes equal to the state A
temperature;

[3]

D-E: Isobaric compression till volume gets equal to the volume of state A;
E-A: Isochoric process.
Draw the qualitative PV sketch showing the above cycle.
2 a) A Perpetual Motion Machine of First kind is impossible. Justify the statement.

[2]

b) 2 kg of air expands adiabatically in a piston-cylinder device from an initial state of

1 MPa, 100C to a final temperature of 30C. Calculate the net work for the
expansion process.

[2+2]

If all the above work of expansion is performed following an alternate path

plin=constant, then determine the value of 17. For air, cp=1.005 kJ/kg-K, c
v=0.718
kJ/kg-K.
3 a) Determine the state of water having a pressure of 0.35 MPa and specific volume
of 0.4m3/kg, with suitable argument.

[2]

b) Steam at 200 kPa with a dryness fraction of 0.2 is available. In an isobaric process
its temperature is raised by 50C. Estimate the final specific volume and specific
internal energy._
4 a) Differentiate between critical point and triple point of water.
b) The piston-cylinder setup as shown in figure
contains 0.1 kg of water at 1000 kPa, 500C.

The water is now cooled with a constant force on

the piston until it reaches half the initial volume.

After this it cools to 25C while the piston is against the stops. Find the final water

pressure and the work in the overall process, and show the process on the P-v
diagram.
5 a) Derive the general energy equation for flow process in a control volume.

adiabatic nozzle.
