Note:
Please write your lecture group on the front page of answer sheet. Attempt all questions.
Attempt all parts of the same question at the same place. Use of steam table is allowed.
Assume any missing data suitably.
Q. 1.
(a) What do you mean by thermodynamic equilibrium?
[2]
(b) It is necessary to store one krnol of methane at 300K in a cylinder of volume 0.065m3.
Determine the pressure using (i) Ideal gas equation of state and (ii) van der Waals equation of
state. Also, comment on the variation of pressure obtained using the above two equation of
states. The value of R = 8.314 kJ/kmol-K, a = 228.296 *10-3 Pa (m3/mol)2 and b = 0.043*10-3
m3/mol.

Q. 2.
(a) A system is taken through several processes as a result of which, final state of system is
identical with initial state. Calculate missing values of work done, internal energy change and
energy transferred as heat during the processes in table below:

(b) One kmol of an ideal gas with y =1.4 is compressed reversibly and adiabatically from 100
kPa and 300K to 500kPa and then it is cooled at constant pressure to the original temperature.
The gas is then restored initial pressure of 100 kPa by following a reversible and isothermal
process. Draw the neat diagram of the process and calculate the heat and work interaction for
each of the process. Also determine the net work done by gas and net energy transferred as
heat to the gas.

Q. 3.
A rigid and closed vessel is to be filled with wet steam at 1 bar pressure, such that upon
heating the system, it should pass through the critical point. Determine the quality and the
ratio of vapour volume to the liquid volume with which the vessel is to be initially filled.
Sketch a P-v diagram for the above process. Take Pc = 221.20 bar and 71 = 374.15 C

Q. 4.
Steam at 3 bar and 250C is cooled at constant volume unti I it reaches at 80C. Answer the
following:
(a) An engineer claims that during above cooling process the steam will become saturated
steam at certain temperature. Will you support the claim? If not, then why not? If yes, then
estimate the temperature of saturated steam.
(b) What is the heat transferred per kg of steam in cooling from 250 C to 80*C?
(c) Sketch the process qualitatively on a P-v diagram.

Q. 5.
(a) Derive the general energy equation for a single stream of fluid entering and single stream
of fluid leaving an adiabatic control volume without any shaft work.

(b) Is the process (shown in figure) steady state? Why or why not?
