1 ALM Process/Configuration/Methodology
1.1 What are the benefits/features of Quality Center?
Quality Center is a comprehensive test management tool that is web-based and
supports high level of communication and association among various stakeholders
(Analyst, Developers, and Testers etc.). One can also create reports and graphs for
Analysis and Tracking for Test processes.

1.2 What is the main purpose to storing requirement in Quality Center?

You store requirements in Quality Center for following reasons:
a. To ensure 100% coverage: You can create and track test plan / sets for the
requirements stored in Quality Center to ensure all the requirements are tested.
b. Easy Change Management: If any requirement changes during course of test
case creation, the underlying test case is automatically highlighted and Test
Engineer can change the test case to suite the new requirement.
c. Ease of Tracking: Using Advanced Reporting & Graphs provided by QC,
Managers can determine various metrics useful in project tracking and
monitoring.

1.3 Are Use Cases treated as Requirements or Test Cases in ALM?

For now, based on SDP, Use Cases are treated as Requirements. We are taking this
concern under advisement and will research this issue and determine an enterprise
solution.
The one concern with defining Use Cases as Test Cases is that it will not support the
RTM relationships as we cannot relate test cases to other test cases.

1.4 How do I get the Test Tollgate Reports from ALM?

Go to the Dashboard Section, Analysis View and determine if an existing report is
suitable for your Tollgate needs. The Test Case Execution Status Trending Report and
the Defects by Status Grouped by Severity may accomplish this. Otherwise, you will
need to create customized report(s).

1.5 How do you identify a test case as UAT, SIT, System, etc?
In the ALM V11, there is no Test Type field.
Many tests are utilized for multiple
purposes. Test types will be identified through associating the tests with the Test Cycles
(ie. SIT, UAT).

1.6 What is Test Lab Module?

In order to execute a Test Case from the Test Plan Module, it needs selected into a Test
Set in the Test Lab Module. Test Cases are created in Test Plan Module and they are
executed in Test Lab Module.

1.7 What is coverage status, what does it do?

Coverage status is percentage of testing covered at a given time. For example, if you
have 100 test cases in a project and you have executed 35 test cases than your
ALM Frequently Asked
Questions

Version 11.3

coverage status of the project is 35% Coverage status is helps keep track of project
deadline.

1.8 Can QC store test results?

Yes, when you run steps the Actual results can be recorded in the bottom right section
of the dialog box under Actual.

1.9 The RTM is missing 2 columns, Design Component and Code

component. How do I add them?
These fields are currently not available in ALM. These fields will need to continue to be
added manually added to the RTM.

1.10 Where do you find the RTM?

Standard requirement matrix can be generated from the requirements tab view.

ALM Frequently Asked

a) Word document format is found under Document Generator Favorites. If not

found, please contact STR team
b) Excel version is found in Analysis Public Documents
c) The STR team is also working on an exceptions view that will be available in the
Public reports

1.11 Does ALM support Business Process Modeling?

The Business Process model component can be utilized, however, you have to provide
the model from a licensed modeling tool. GM does not have a specific modeling tool
that is being used and has not provided licenses. If you can obtain funding for a
modeling tool, you would be able to import the model and utilize the module. The ALM
product supports xml and xpdl file types. You cannot attach power point business
models.
You create the models outside of ALM, import them and then you can link for traceability
to requirements and tests and also create assets from the model. This youtube video
on ALM/QC business process functionality gives a pretty good overview:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KYUq2Axejjk

1.12 How can I activate defect email notifications?

Contact the STR ALM support team to turn on email notifications

1.13 How can I enable project versioning?

Contact the STR ALM support team to activate project versioning. Note: once a project
is versioned, it is not recommended to de-activate.

2 ALM and SDP integration

2.1 What is Requirements Group and Category?
Both Requirements Group and Category are SDP data elements and are required to add
a requirement. The group is a list containing a breakdown of the specific requirement

ALM Frequently Asked

Questions

Version 11.3

sections of the Business Requirements. The category is just a further breakdown. When
adding a requirement, make sure you select the Group 1st then the category.

2.2 How do I create SDP reports?

a) Click on Dashboard - Analysis View and open the Public / Standard Metrics / SDP
document folders
b) Select appropriate SDP report and click Generate
c) The SDP reports will generate all sections of the documents; however some will
content in not included in ALM and will need to be cut and pasted from other
documents such as the Introduction/Project Description

2.3 Why cant I add additional requirement types or add data elements to
the requirement, test or defect entities?
The core template that was created and is applied to all projects is based on the GM
SDP Methodology. The template aligns the tool to the SDP and also provides uniformity
for cross entity reporting.
Any change to the template will necessitate a change to the SDP. A change can be
requested but it will need to be reviewed and approved not only by the ALM team but the
methodology team as well.

3 Data Loads/Data Migration

3.1 How do I export Excel files into ALM?
To export an Excel file into ALM you need to install the Excel Add-in plug in. To install
the Excel Add-in plug in go to the Add-ins link on the ALM landing page and it will open a
window that will have a link to More Add-ins, clicking on the More Add-ins link will take
you to a page where the Excel-Add-in can be downloaded from. Upon clicking on the
link you will see an installation guide, a user guide and the Excel Add-in. To install
follow the instructions. If you have an old version of the Excel Add-in, please uninstall

Close Quality Center on your machine and disable these applications on your
machine. Open the Task Manager and verify the processes for these applications
are not running. Then, log back into your Quality Center project and try to
duplicate the issue.
If you do not have any of the above programs running on your machine, close all

reproduce the error message. If you cannot, then open up one application at a
time until your issue is reproduced.
Another way to confirm that the issue is caused by some application running on
the client machine is to re-start your computer in "Safe Mode" and see if the
issue can be duplicated again. If you are unsure how to start your computer in
"Safe Mode" then please get help from your IT personnel.
If you still have this issue, then perform the following steps to see if you have
another application installed that may cause this issue.
To help ensure that your machine is clean of known ad-ware/spyware programs
installed on your system, below is a URL to a site that has a freeware utility that
scans your system for known ad-ware and spyware programs on a system. Adware and spyware programs are known to be very malicious and almost
undetectable by a regular user, causing intermittent or persistent problems with
the system, especially the Web browsers.
