Test II.
1. Consider a small 10-ft tall and 3-ft thick concrete retaining wall. The backfill behind the
wall will be from local sandy gravel with a dry unit weight of 115 pcf and an angle of
internal friction of 30 degrees. The wall will not have to retain water. Determine
a. The lateral force on the wall from the backfill in an active pressure condition
b. The stability of the wall against overturning
c. The stability of the wall against sliding

FOOTING SUBJECTED TO MOMENT

Problem: A footing is to support a 400 x 400 mm tied column carrying a Dead load of 500 kN, a
Live load of 1000 kN, Dead load moment of 600 kN-m., Live load moment of 600 kN-m, fc = 27
MPa, fy = 414 MPa, SBC = 207 kPa, weight of footing and soil above footing is 10% of total
service load.
If the soil reaction is to be maximum, design the following:
1. Most economical length of an edge of a square footing required to safely carry the said
load.
2. Minimum allowable thickness of footing.
3. Number of 20 mm dia. Bars required in the direction of bending.
Solution:
Weight of footing + soil above it = 10% (DL + LL) = 10% (500 + 1000) = 150 kN
Ptotal = 500 + 1000 + 150 = 1650 kN
For soil to be safe:

Ptotal

Actual bearing stress <= SBC

Ptotal/Area of footing required <= 207
Area of footing required >= 1650/207 = 7.97 m2
For a square footing:
L2 = 7.97
L = 2.823 say 2.825 m
Solve for eccentricity, e:
Mtotal = Ptotale
e = Mtotal/Punfactored = (600 + 600)/(500 + 1000) = 1200/1500 = 0.8 m = 800 mmp
critical section for shear

Principle: So as not to create moment on soil (i.e. imbalance in the reaction) place P at the
critical section for moment
centerline of the footing.
Pu = 1.2D + 1.6L = 1.2(500) + 1.6(1000) = 2200 kN

wult

Wult = 2200/2.8252 = 275.67 kPa

Solve for d from shear:
Vult = Wult(2.825)(x d)
x = 1.4125 + e 0.2
= 1.4125 + 0.8 0.2
= 2.0125 m
