Safety precautions
Qualified staff should only use the system for the purpose it is intended for. Pay attention to
the safety warnings at all times.
2.1
All electrical connections, maintenance and repair work which requires the control section
to be opened may only be performed by a qualified electrician.
Check the power cable for damage before switching on, and do not switch on if it is damaged or cut.
Switch the system off before starting maintenance, repair or cleaning work in the control
section and before working on the analyzer in SERVICE mode.
The control section contains condensers charged with dangerously high voltages. Wait
one minute after switching the system off before opening the control section.
Never wash or spray the system with water. Avoid water entering the interior.
Protect the system from one-sided heat radiation, direct sunlight and vibration. It must be
installed in a dry, dust-free room. Special precautions are required in environments with
corrosive gas, vapor or explosion risk.
2.2

Danger:
Special precautions are needed when working with chemical reagents, both
when renewing reagents and when dealing with leaks or spills. Some reagents can cause chemical burns and may cause injury or death if swallowed. Refer to danger symbols and R- and S-codes on the reagent containers.
Section 2.3.1 contains a list of danger symbols and section 2.3.2 a list of the
R-codes (warnings about particular dangers) and S-codes (safety recommendations) that can be shown on the reagent containers.
Observe the following general precautions:
2.3
Wear protective clothing where necessary, such as overalls, gloves and safety glasses
(see section 2.3.2 for details).
Do not put reagents into containers which could be confused with those used for drinks
Remove reagent splashes inside the Monitor at once with a damp cloth to protect it from
damage.
Keep reagents securely closed and in a safe place where there is no risk of abuse or accidental contact.
The relevant R and S (safety and hazard) labeling. A complete list is shown in section
2.3.2.
The reagents are classified according to the European dangerous material regulations.

Overview

3.2
Process Monitoring
The change in analytical result is used as early warning of changes in a production process, such as the rise in silica concentration in de-ionized water which signals the impending exhaustion of an ion-exchange column. Other applications are the change in concentration of mineral salts or phosphate in wastewater or in electroplating baths.
Process Control
Here the analytical result is used in closed-loop control system to initiate changes in reaction conditions or raw material dosing. An example is the addition of chalk for the absorption of HCl in waste gas cleaning.
20
MT5-50EN-06
Process Registration
The analytical result has to be recorded as evidence of correct process function or allowable emission of pollutants.
System Monitoring
Here the change in concentration of an indicator substance is used as an alarm trigger for
an error condition. An example is the sodium content of condensate in atomic power stations; a rise indicates a leak in the condenser.
System Supervision
Here the analysis value has to lie within a given tolerance band to ensure that certain
components of the system will not be damaged. An example is hardness monitoring in
boiler water to eliminate the danger of corrosion damage.
According to the type of application, various measuring methods are necessary. Bran+Luebbe

All Monitor 90 systems have the following performance characteristics in common:
3.3
Low drift
Easy operation
Long life
Monitor 90 S Ionometer
The Ionometer makes potentiometric measurements of water-soluble ions, using an ionsensitive electrode. It is mainly used for monitoring nitrate and ammonia in sewage plants.
MT5-50EN-06
Monitor 90S
21
The Ionometer is permanently connected to the process being monitored via a sample stream
connection. The sample and the reagent(s) that are necessary to provide constant ionic conditions and eliminate interference are mixed in controlled proportions by peristaltic metering
pumps.
The mixture passes into a measuring cell containing a single electrode or a measuring and a
reference electrode, and the ions to be measured produce a voltage potential on the electrode
that is proportional to the logarithm of the concentration of the measured ion.
The mathematical basis of the concentration calculation is described in Appendix C.
3.4
3.5
Monitor 90 S Titrometer
The Titrometer is a system for the automatic volumetric measurement of substances dissolved in water. The added volume of an appropriate liquid (titrant) needed to complete a
chemical reaction to measure the concentration of parameters such as free acid, alkali, hardness, metals or acid / base capacity is determined and related to the sample concentration.
The system is permanently connected to the sample stream and receives a constant sample
feed, but its operation is cyclic.
In one program cycle the titration vessel is emptied, rinsed, a measured volume of sample is
added, dilution water or a reagent is added if necessary, and titrant is measured in. The titration vessel can be thermostatted if necessary. Detection is via an electrode that dips into the
titration vessel, whose output voltage is measured throughout the titration.
Potentiometric titration
The Titrometer analyses aqueous samples by the principle of potentiometric titration. A measured volume of sample is treated with an accurately dosed titrant that reacts with the sample.
During the titrant addition the electrode output is monitored. Titrant is added until the point of
22
MT5-50EN-06
the change in electrode output is reached which indicates the end point of the titration. Electrodes are used for each application that responds to the type of ion or ions being measured.
The volume of titrant that was added at the end point and the elapsed titration time are proportional to the concentration of the substance being measured in the sample.
Voltametric titration
In the case of voltametric titrations a small current of some microamperes is set on the measuring system of measuring and reference electrode. This current leads to a polarization voltage that is monitored. At the end point of titration the polarization voltage changes from near 0
mV to some hundreds of millivolts or the other way round.
Two types of titration are possible on the Monitor 90 Titrometer:
1-stage titration
Normal titration
In a 1-stage titration, a single titrant is added until the end point is reached. One sample concentration can be calculated.
Back titration
A back titration is done by adding the sample in a surplus of reagent. The sample reacts with the reagent and the surplus is titrated with the titrant until the end point is
reached. With the determined surplus the need of reagent and so the concentration of
the reactant in the sample is calculated.
2-stage titration
In a 2-stage titration two end points are determined, one after the other. Each end point
refers to one determinant, so that two different parameters can be determined. In some
cases a third determinant can be calculated from the results of the first two.
To be able to calculate a sample concentration, calibration factors are required that have to
be determined at regular intervals. For a 1-stage titration, a calibration can be carried out with
either one or two calibration solutions (1-point and 2-point calibrations). For a 2-stage titration,
two calibration solutions are measured, and two 1-point calibrations are carried out.
The chemical and mathematical basis of the concentration calculation is described in Appendix C.

Built-in display
When the system is in MEASURE mode the last available sample reading is shown on the
display (refer to section 6.3.1).
Multi-stream systems have two display options:
Rolling display The values from each sample stream are shown in rotation, with a 2 second interval between each one.
Single display
The last available measurement is displayed until the next one is ready,
so that for example sample 1 is displayed while sample 2 is being measured.
For 1-step Titrometer, the last available value of component A is displayed until the next one is ready, so that for example sample 1 is displayed while sample 2 is being measured. For 2-step Titrometer, the last
available values of components A, B and C of one sample stream are
shown in rotation until the next values are ready. The display changes after 2 seconds.
Rolling display For 1-step Titrometer, the values of component A from each sample
stream are shown in rotation, with a 2 second interval between each one.
For 2-step Titrometer, the values of components A, B and C of all sample
streams are shown in rotation (with a 2 second interval).
The display shows the number of the sample stream (1-4), the component (A, B or C) and
the calculated concentration value, e.g.:

You will find further information on printing and printer requirements in section 10.
Computer connection
An external computer can be used to control and monitor one or more Monitor 90 analyzers.
If more than one Monitor is to control, the RS485 interface must be used which allows
controlling up to 31 Monitors.
The computer (master) and Monitor work in master-and-slave mode. The computer always initiates the communication. Data communication follows a fixed STX-ETX protocol
with software handshake using ASCII characters.
Details are described in the manual for the Monitor 90 computer connection.
Technical data
The maximum communication cable lengths are:
RS232C: ca. 10 m (at 9600 Baud)
RS485: ca. 1000 m (at 9600 Baud).
Character format: Data transfer is asynchronous and character and bit-serial. Data bits,
parity and stop bits are selectable; the following are recommended:

Operating conditions
For trouble-free operation the system should be used only under the following conditions:
4.3
Vibration-free mounting.
In conformity with the specified environmental conditions for the system: special protective
installation (e.g. a ventilated cabin) is needed in areas where corrosive gas or vapor may
occur or where there is risk of explosion.
The system must not be used outdoors, but always in a building or cabin conforming to
the above requirements, with temperature control if necessary.
The sample must be homogenous and particle-free. If it is not, a Filtration system must be
used (e.g. for systems in waste water treatment works). Contact Bran+Luebbe for details.

Electrical installation
Danger:
Make electrical connections according to VDE or local regulations.
Only a qualified electrician should carry out electrical installation.
Follow these basic rules for installation:
Lay the signal cables so that they will be free of inductive interference.
Use only screened cable for signal leads, and connect the screens to the Monitor housing.
Power cable
The power cable is lead through a stuffing box on the top of the Monitor housing.
The Monitor voltage is factory set to 230V 50 Hz unless otherwise specified. Voltage
variations of 10% and frequency variations of 5% are acceptable.
The normal power requirement is 150 VA.
Warning:
Do not plug in the power cord yet, because this would start the Monitor.

On the very left the terminal block X6 contains the alarm contacts and the analog output for sample line 1. The exact position of the several contacts is shown on sheet 2 of
the wiring diagram in appendix A.
The first accessory board contains the limit alarm contacts for sample lines 2 to 4 on
terminals X33 and the analog contacts on terminals X34. The exact position of the individual contacts is shown on sheet 6 of the wiring diagram in appendix A if supplied
with your Monitor.
The second accessory board contains the limit alarm contacts for sample lines 5 to 7
on terminals X33 and the analog contacts on terminals X34. The exact position of the
individual contacts is shown on sheet 7 of the wiring diagram in appendix A if supplied
with your Monitor.
The terminals are connected with a maximum of 3 cables, shielded, each having 12 conductors with a cross-section of 0.25 mm2:
1. Lead the connection cable(s) through a PG cable fixing on top of the Monitor.
2. To access the control section, loosen the knurled nut on the left-hand side of the analyzer plate and swing the plate forward. The control section is mounted at the rear of
the analyzer plate.
3. Next lead the cables from the bottom through the matching rubber bushings.
4. Remove the cable insulation and fit the conductors with conductor end bushings. The
shield is twisted and connected with the device earth.
5. Now connect each conductor following the wiring diagram in appendix A, close the
control section and fasten the PG cable fixings.
6. When two accessory boards are fitted (e.g. for more than 4 sample streams) the top
board must be temporarily removed to gain access to the terminals on the first board.
Loosen the cables from position A and B and unscrew the four nuts that fix the board
on the spacing bolts.

Sample inlet, sample overflow, dilution or rinsing solution (if required) and waste
outlet
These tubing connections enter through stuffing boxes in the Monitor base. More details
are shown in the Tubing Diagram in Appendix A.
For each of these tubing connections, proceed as follows:
1. If the tube in the Monitor is not yet connected to the stuffing box, remove the nut from
one side of the stuffing box and slide it over the tube.
2. Push the tube fully onto the stuffing box.
It may be necessary to slightly stretch the tube end with needle-nose pliers and wet it
with de-ionized water. PVC tubes can be heated to about 35C.
3. Fasten the nut.
4. Remove the 2 nuts from the other side of the stuffing box and insert it from above in
the corresponding opening in the Monitor base.
5. Fasten the first nut from below, then repeat steps 2 and 3 for the external tube connection (PVC tube, 3x1.5 mm).
Warning:
Sample inlet and waste outlet must be pressure-free.
As some reagents are corrosive, the entire waste system must be chemically resistant.
Observe local regulations concerning disposal of chemical waste into the public sewage
system.
Pump tubes
In order to prolong the life of the pump tubes, they are removed from the pumps before
shipping. To install them, proceed as follows:
1. Loosen the knurled screws and remove the pump platen (Fig. 4.3).
2. Place the pump tube around the rotor, being careful not to twist the tube.
Warning:
Make sure that the liquid inlet tube is always connected to the upper
pump tube connection.
3. Plug in the power cord and wait until the system code appears on the display.

Automatic analysis cycle
No further user action is normally necessary now, as the program sequence and the operating parameters are factory-entered.
Sample value(s) will be displayed after the first measuring cycle is complete. On singlestream Monitors each new sample value over-writes the previous one, and the latest value is
on the display and in the system memory. On multi-stream systems you can choose between
rolling and single display modes, according to the value of Parameter 53 (see section 9.4).
Some systems running at very low levels may show relatively high drift on start-up. This is
due to tubing contamination, and will stabilize, normally after a few hours.
For an Ionometer, electrodes must operate for several hours to reach stability.
Monitors containing a heating element may show the error message "Error 61" (low temperature) when first switched on. When the set temperature is reached the warning will extinguish
and the Monitor will start the analysis cycle automatically.
If necessary, you can display the parameters and alter them, e.g. the calibration frequency or
the sample limits. This is fully described in section 9 where you also find the general parameter list. The parameter list for your individual system is shown in Appendix A.
Warning:
Do not go outside limits shown in the Main Data Sheet in Appendix A, otherwise the measuring operation may be disturbed.

sample stream and "sample" light continues to blink. Pressing the info key shows
which stream has low sample.
Operating modes
The Monitor 90 has four principal operating modes: MEASURING, CALIBRATION, SERVICE
and ERROR; and six further functions: PUMP, INFO, DATA, TEST, PRINT and
CONCENTRATION. When these functions are activated the current operating mode continues. For example, if the system is in MEASURE mode and PRINT is activated, measurement
continues.
The table below summarizes the operating modes, how to enter and leave then, and their purpose.

MEASURING mode
In MEASURING mode the Monitor measures the concentration of the sample and shows the
current value the display. "Busy" lamp is lit.
For multi-stream systems, the values from each sample stream are shown either in rotation,
with a 2 second interval between each one, or the last available measurement is displayed
until the next one is ready (see parameter 53 in section 9.4). The current values for the other
sample streams are stored in memory and can be recalled with the conc key.
The mathematical principles for calculating the sample values are described in Appendix C.
The computer automatically checks for results exceeding sample limits, and whether sample
and reagent supply is OK and the calibration parameters are acceptable.
6.3.2
CALIBRATION mode
The Monitor must be calibrated at regular intervals. This occurs during CALIBRATION mode,
when the necessary valves are activated to introduce the calibration solution(s).
The calibration cycle can be started automatically, according to the data entered in Parameter
38, manually with the cal key, or externally via Parameter 18 (see also section 9.4).
Parameter 38 offers three possibilities:
1
MT5-50EN-06
Monitor 90S
Section 6 Operation
55
A precondition for successful automatic calibration is that the calibration standards are stable.
If they are not, they must be freshly prepared and the calibration started manually each time.
Frequency of calibration depends on individual applications and operating conditions: 24
hours is normal.
The mathematical principles for calculating the calibration factors are described in Appendix
C.
The Monitor determines the calibration factors automatically and stores them. Calibration
warning limits and operating limits are factory-programmed. After each calibration the system
checks whether the limits have been exceeded. There are the following possibilities:
Successful calibration
If the calibration is within limits the new calibration factors are written into the corresponding parameters and the Monitor automatically enters MEASURING mode.
6.3.3
SERVICE mode
SERVICE mode should always be selected when performing routine maintenance such as
changing reagents or pump tubes, or clearing leaks and spills.
Entering and leaving SERVICE mode
Press the serv key to enter SERVICE mode. The current analysis or calibration cycle proceeds to the end, and the light on the serv key blinks during this time. The light stays on
when the cycle is finished: then all pumps are switched off and valves are closed. The last
measured values are stored. In systems with temperature control, this is maintained.
SERVICE mode can also be entered externally via Parameter 18 (see section 0).
Warning:
Switch off the Monitor when working on heated components. Otherwise there
is a risk of burning yourself, or the component may overheat.
56
MT5-50EN-06
SERVICE mode may be entered immediately after power on, within 5 seconds of the system
and software version being displayed, without having to wait for the end of the analysis cycle.
It can also be entered immediately when the Monitor is showing an error message.
Pressing the serv key again exits SERVICE mode. The Monitor then returns to MEASURING
or CALIBRATION mode.
6.3.4
ERROR mode
The Monitor continuously checks itself for errors in the analysis cycle, component failure, internal data transmission and correct computer function. If a fault is detected the system automatically enters ERROR mode.
When this occurs, the system reacts as follows:
Analysis is interrupted
Calibration is impossible
While in ERROR mode, SERVICE mode can be entered by pressing the serv key. Both
modes are then active, and all SERVICE functions are available.
After an error has been corrected the system automatically returns to MEASURE mode. If an
error is still present when exiting SERVICE mode, it will be shown on the display and ERROR
mode will be maintained.
6.4
The functions
As well as the operating modes MEASURE, CALIBRATE, SERVICE and ERROR, the Monitor
has six further functions: PUMP, INFO, DATA, TEST, PRINT and CONCENTRATION. When
these functions are activated the current operating mode continues. For example, if the system is in MEASURE mode and PRINT is activated, measurement continues.
The table below summarizes the functions, how to enter and leave them, and their purpose.

Summary
Section 7 Maintenance
63
The Monitor must be regularly maintained to ensure proper operation. We recommend that a
maintenance log be kept, to give a record of routine servicing and system performance data,
and to serve as a useful data sheet for Bran+Luebbe service engineers or for telephone troubleshooting. A blank log sheet is provided at the end of this chapter.
A summary of routine maintenance is shown below. Refer to the following sections for complete descriptions of maintenance activities.
The maintenance intervals given below are only approximate values. Depending on the environmental conditions shorter intervals may be necessary.

Enter calibration parameters in maintenance log
Reading the calibration data daily and writing it down is very useful for diagnosing faults or
noticing sudden or slow changes in system performance. It will also help service engineers to solve problems more quickly.
After the system has been running for a few months it is sufficient to collect the data twice
a week.
To read out calibration data:
1. Press

Check valves for proper function
Make sure the valves click audibly when they operate.
Check that waste outlet is clear
The sample and reagent drain must be clear and free from backpressure.
Check reagent supply and refill if necessary
7.4
Monthly maintenance
Check valves for leaks
1. Press serv to place the system into SERVICE mode.
2. Carefully loosen the tubing above the valve with a screwdriver.
Sample valve:
When working properly, no liquid should leave the nipple when the valve is closed.
If sample leaks through the valve, first check that sample flow rate and pressure are
correct. If reducing the sample flow does not solve the problem, the valve must be replaced.
Calibration valve:
If the valve is airtight the reagent must not sink down the tube when the exit tubing is
removed. If it does, the valve must be replaced.
3. Replace tubing onto valve nipple.
4. Press serv again to return the Monitor to normal measuring mode.
Check pumps
Check that the pumps are pumping liquid by introducing an air bubble into each line and
following its progress along the tube. (For reagents, briefly lift the reagent dip tube out of
the reagent: for sample, briefly open the inlet tubing).
If the air bubble does not move, the pump tube may be worn out, the pump platen not correctly seated or the rotors may be defective.
Check pump rotors for possible damage and for quiet operation
If scratches or defects are visible on the rollers, or if excessive play is visible, the rotor
must be renewed.
66
MT5-50EN-06
Check tubing
Look for dirt, algae, leaks, blockages and general condition.
If the tubes are very dirty, clean them with dilute hypochlorite solution:
1. Press
serv
2. Ionometer/Titrometer:
Remove the electrode(s) from the measuring cell lid.
Ionometer NH4+, NO3-, NOx, F-, K- and DOC: slowly remove the measuring electrode
while gently rotating it in a clockwise direction!
Warning:
Electrodes must not come into contact with hypochlorite solution; otherwise they may be permanently damaged.
3. Using a screwdriver, carefully remove the lower tube from the sample pump.
4. Using a syringe, inject 50 ml dilute hypochlorite solution (commercial degree hypochlorite, 13% chlorine, diluted 1:10 with tap water). Repeat if necessary to remove
all contamination.
Danger:
Avoid hypochlorite contact with skin, eyes or mucous membranes.
Wear protective glasses and gloves.
TYGON tubing that has become milky in appearance will not interfere with correct
function.
5. Using a syringe rinse at least 3 times with water to remove all traces of hypochlorite,
which could otherwise damage the electrode.
6. Ionometer/Titrometer:
Replace electrodes as described in the instructions in the packet.
7. Replace tube onto pump and press serv to exit SERVICE mode.
If a filtration is connected, you could also pump dilute hypochlorite solution from the filtration to the Monitor (when cleaning the filter tubes).
However, remember to remove electrodes from measuring cell!
If this cleaning procedure does not remove contamination, or if tubes are leaking, replace
them. When installing new tubing, slightly stretch the end with needle-nose pliers and
moisten the tubing before pushing it onto the connector.

Checking Electrodes
Electrodes have a limited life, which depends on the electrode type and the sample being
measured. Check electrodes monthly and replace them annually. Always keep a spare
electrode available.
To check electrode performance, compare the current calibration values with the upper
and lower calibration operating limits Uo and m shown in Appendix A. To do this, press
test and the and keys to call up the values for c1 and c2 (see section 6.4.6).
If the calibration factors are approaching the operating limits, the electrode maintenance
procedure should be carried out, as described in the data sheet packed with each electrode.

2. Clamp off the tube to the reagent bottle or sample line with a suitable clamp such as
artery forceps or a small locking wrench, protecting the tubing from damage if necessary.
3. Loosen tubing connections to the pump tube.
4. Loosen the knurled nuts and remove the platen.
5. Clean the platen, and lubricate the rotors and platen springs with half a drop of oil (see
Fig. 4.3).
6. Remove old pump tube.
7. Place the new pump tube in position without twisting it.
Warning:
Make sure that the liquid entry is always to the top pump tube connection.
8. Press pump to start the pumps. The rotating pump will help to prevent premature
damage to the new tube.
9. Replace the platen and tighten the screws, with the pump still rotating.
Warning:
Danger of trapped fingers in rotating pump!

Ionometer/Kolorimeter/Silikometer
If, for example, a nitrate system is calibrated with a solution whose concentration is defined in
terms of N, and the sample result is desired in terms of NO3, the required conversion factor
can be entered as Parameter 12.
The Main Data Sheet in Appendix A shows in which units the system was factory-calibrated.
Commonly used conversion factors are:
1 ppm NO3
1 ppm NO3-N
1 ppm PO4
1 ppm PO4-P
1 ppm NH4
1 ppm NH4-N
1 ppm NH3
1 ppm NH4-N
(1 ppm
= 1 mg/l)
If you change Parameter 12, multiply the measuring range and limit values (Parameters 21-24) with the new factor and enter the new values. Otherwise the
limit alarms will be falsely triggered. The new values may safely be rounded up
or down.
Example:
From Main Data Sheet:
Range:
0 - 5 ppm NO3-N
Alarm limit:
4 ppm
The Monitor is set to display values as NO3 by entering a conversion factor of 4.427. This produces the following values (not rounded values in brackets):
New data in Parameter list:
Range:
Alarm limit:
18 (17.708) ppm
Titrometer
A system measuring for example dH can output the results as BH if the appropriate factor is
entered in Parameter 12.
If you change Parameter 12, multiply the range and limit values (Parameters 2124) with the new factor and enter the new values. Otherwise the limit alarms
will be falsely triggered. The new values can be rounded.

An input used for remote control looses its original function, i.e. the reagent or dilution water
supply can no longer be checked.
Note that these inputs are not decoupled, i.e. if they are used for remote control, the potentials must be separated, for example by means of a relay. In addition, the signal must be present for more than 1 second to set the desired mode.
For the connection, see the Terminal diagram in appendix A.
9.4.3
Maximum alarm: Lower limit is set to 0, upper limit to e.g. 60, Parameter 54 (suppress
negative results) to 1. The contact closes and alarm status is activated when the sample
concentration is greater than or equal to 60.
Minimum alarm: Lower limit is set to 40, upper limit to 0. Alarm status when sample concentration is 40 or below.
Range alarm: Lower limit 40, upper limit 60. Alarm status when sample concentration falls
outside these limits. In range alarm mode the Monitor does not distinguish between concentrations above or below the set values.

The sample concentration is calculated as follows:
In dilute solutions, the potential between the electrodes in the measuring cell is proportional to
the logarithm of the measured ion's concentration (Nernst equation):

the concentration of the measured ion in the sample where the measured voltage of
the measuring chain is temperature-independent.
Uo and m are the calibration factors. They are automatically determined by the Monitor during
each calibration.
On calibration, two solutions of known concentration are sequentially pumped into the measuring cell in place of sample, and the resulting voltages are recorded.
The calibration factors are calculated from the following equation:

Titrometer
The Titrometer analyses aqueous samples by the principle of potentiometric titration. A measured volume of sample is treated with an accurately dosed titrant and during the titrant addition the electrode output is monitored. Titrant is added until the point of the change in electrode output is reached which indicates the end point of the titration. Electrodes are used for
each application that respond to the type of ion or ions being measured.
A common example is the determination of acid concentration. The titrant in this case is a
base, or alkali, and the concentration of H+ ions is measured in the reaction vessel. As more
base is added, the concentration of H+ ions decreases; the rate of decrease depends on the
concentration of H+ and OH- ions already in the reaction mixture. The end-point in this titration
is the point of maximum rate of change, or point of inflection of the titration curve, as shown in
Figure C.1.
The volume of titrant that was added at the end point is proportional to the concentration of
the substance being measured in the sample. Because the titrant is added by a pump at a
constant rate, it is also proportional to the titration time. The exact concentration of the titrant
or flow rate of the pump need not be known, because the system is calibrated with a standard
of known concentration which is analyzed in the same way as samples.

Calibration is with one or two calibration solutions according to whether the calibration graph
is linear or 2nd-order (see Figure C.2). The Monitor calculates calibration factors A and B.
For a linear calibration, calibration factor B = 0, i.e. the quadratic coefficient of the equation B
tT2 = 0. For a non-linear calibration B ~ 0.
The following explanation describes 1- and 2-point calibrations in more detail.

The volume of the titration solution is proportional to the titration time. The concentration then
results from the difference between calibration concentration and the titrated concentration.
Calibration:
With the calibration a solution with well-known concentration CK1 is titrated up to the indication
voltage. With the titration time tK1 the calibration factor A is then calculated.
