Section 2 Safety precautions

Safety precautions
Qualified staff should only use the system for the purpose it is intended for. Pay attention to
the safety warnings at all times.

2.1

General safety precautions

Danger:
This system contains electrical components operating under dangerously
high voltages. Contact may result in electric shock and severe or fatal injury.
Observe the following general precautions:

All electrical connections, maintenance and repair work which requires the control section
to be opened may only be performed by a qualified electrician.

Make sure the system is properly grounded before switching on.

Check the power cable for damage before switching on, and do not switch on if it is damaged or cut.

Switch the system off before starting maintenance, repair or cleaning work in the control
section and before working on the analyzer in SERVICE mode.

The control section contains condensers charged with dangerously high voltages. Wait
one minute after switching the system off before opening the control section.

Never wash or spray the system with water. Avoid water entering the interior.

Protect the system from one-sided heat radiation, direct sunlight and vibration. It must be
installed in a dry, dust-free room. Special precautions are required in environments with
corrosive gas, vapor or explosion risk.

Do not place anything on top of the system.

2.2

Working with reagents

MT5-50EN-06

Danger:
Special precautions are needed when working with chemical reagents, both
when renewing reagents and when dealing with leaks or spills. Some reagents can cause chemical burns and may cause injury or death if swallowed. Refer to danger symbols and R- and S-codes on the reagent containers.
Section 2.3.1 contains a list of danger symbols and section 2.3.2 a list of the
R-codes (warnings about particular dangers) and S-codes (safety recommendations) that can be shown on the reagent containers.
Observe the following general precautions:

2.3

Only qualified staff should work with reagents.

Avoid reagent contact with skin or mucous membranes.

Wear protective clothing where necessary, such as overalls, gloves and safety glasses
(see section 2.3.2 for details).

Never pipette reagents by mouth

Do not put reagents into containers which could be confused with those used for drinks

Do not eat, drink or smoke while working with reagents

Remove reagent splashes inside the Monitor at once with a damp cloth to protect it from
damage.

Keep reagents securely closed and in a safe place where there is no risk of abuse or accidental contact.

Labeling of dangerous substances

The properties of all Bran+Luebbe reagents are closely scrutinized. Items classed as hazardous are marked as such in accordance with EU-regulations.
These prescribe labeling with hazard symbols and plain text warnings, and the inclusion of
risk and safety (R and S) information.

Danger symbols. See explanation in section 2.3.1.

The relevant R and S (safety and hazard) labeling. A complete list is shown in section
2.3.2.

The reagents are classified according to the European dangerous material regulations.

Applications of Monitor 90 Analyzers

Monitor 90 S Ionometer, Kolorimeter and Silikometer belong to the Monitor 90 series of
Bran+Luebbe analyzers. These operate fully automatically with wet chemical methods to
measure various parameters in liquids and gases. Commonly measured parameters include
hardness, phosphate, nitrate, ammonia, chlorine, metals and silicate. Application areas include power generation, chemical industry, wastewater, atmospheric and waste gas monitoring.
The Monitors are used for several primary purposes, including

Process Monitoring
The change in analytical result is used as early warning of changes in a production process, such as the rise in silica concentration in de-ionized water which signals the impending exhaustion of an ion-exchange column. Other applications are the change in concentration of mineral salts or phosphate in wastewater or in electroplating baths.

Process Control
Here the analytical result is used in closed-loop control system to initiate changes in reaction conditions or raw material dosing. An example is the addition of chalk for the absorption of HCl in waste gas cleaning.

20

Bran+Luebbe Monitor 90 S Ionometer / Kolorimeter / Silikometer / Titrometer

MT5-50EN-06

Process Registration
The analytical result has to be recorded as evidence of correct process function or allowable emission of pollutants.

System Monitoring
Here the change in concentration of an indicator substance is used as an alarm trigger for
an error condition. An example is the sodium content of condensate in atomic power stations; a rise indicates a leak in the condenser.

System Supervision
Here the analysis value has to lie within a given tolerance band to ensure that certain
components of the system will not be damaged. An example is hardness monitoring in
boiler water to eliminate the danger of corrosion damage.

According to the type of application, various measuring methods are necessary. Bran+Luebbe
Monitors are available in different versions covering many different application fields:

3.3

Short response time

Low sensitivity to interference

Low drift

High mechanical reliability

Easy operation

Low operation and maintenance costs

Low space requirement

Long life

Monitor 90 S Ionometer
The Ionometer makes potentiometric measurements of water-soluble ions, using an ionsensitive electrode. It is mainly used for monitoring nitrate and ammonia in sewage plants.

MT5-50EN-06

Monitor 90S

Section 3 System description

21

The Ionometer is permanently connected to the process being monitored via a sample stream
connection. The sample and the reagent(s) that are necessary to provide constant ionic conditions and eliminate interference are mixed in controlled proportions by peristaltic metering
pumps.
The mixture passes into a measuring cell containing a single electrode or a measuring and a
reference electrode, and the ions to be measured produce a voltage potential on the electrode
that is proportional to the logarithm of the concentration of the measured ion.
The mathematical basis of the concentration calculation is described in Appendix C.

3.4

Monitor 90 S Kolorimeter and Silikometer

The Kolorimeter is a system for the automatic photometric measurement of substances dissolved in water. It is mainly used for measuring phosphate in wastewater.
The Silikometer is a Kolorimeter that is specially designed for the analysis of silica.
The system is permanently connected to the process being monitored and receives a constant sample feed, but its operation is cyclic.
Sample and reagent(s) in predetermined proportions are delivered by peristaltic pumps and
mixed. The reagents and the sample undergo a chemical reaction that produces a colored
compound proportional to the sample concentration.
At the end of this reaction time the reaction mixture enters the photometer flow cell. Monochromatic light is passed through it and the absorbance (light absorption) is measured electrically. This reading is used to calculate the concentration.
The mathematical basis of the concentration calculation is described in Appendix C.

3.5

Monitor 90 S Titrometer
The Titrometer is a system for the automatic volumetric measurement of substances dissolved in water. The added volume of an appropriate liquid (titrant) needed to complete a
chemical reaction to measure the concentration of parameters such as free acid, alkali, hardness, metals or acid / base capacity is determined and related to the sample concentration.
The system is permanently connected to the sample stream and receives a constant sample
feed, but its operation is cyclic.
In one program cycle the titration vessel is emptied, rinsed, a measured volume of sample is
added, dilution water or a reagent is added if necessary, and titrant is measured in. The titration vessel can be thermostatted if necessary. Detection is via an electrode that dips into the
titration vessel, whose output voltage is measured throughout the titration.
Potentiometric titration
The Titrometer analyses aqueous samples by the principle of potentiometric titration. A measured volume of sample is treated with an accurately dosed titrant that reacts with the sample.
During the titrant addition the electrode output is monitored. Titrant is added until the point of

22

Bran+Luebbe Monitor 90 S Ionometer / Kolorimeter / Silikometer / Titrometer

MT5-50EN-06

the change in electrode output is reached which indicates the end point of the titration. Electrodes are used for each application that responds to the type of ion or ions being measured.
The volume of titrant that was added at the end point and the elapsed titration time are proportional to the concentration of the substance being measured in the sample.
Voltametric titration
In the case of voltametric titrations a small current of some microamperes is set on the measuring system of measuring and reference electrode. This current leads to a polarization voltage that is monitored. At the end point of titration the polarization voltage changes from near 0
mV to some hundreds of millivolts or the other way round.
Two types of titration are possible on the Monitor 90 Titrometer:

1-stage titration

Normal titration
In a 1-stage titration, a single titrant is added until the end point is reached. One sample concentration can be calculated.

Back titration
A back titration is done by adding the sample in a surplus of reagent. The sample reacts with the reagent and the surplus is titrated with the titrant until the end point is
reached. With the determined surplus the need of reagent and so the concentration of
the reactant in the sample is calculated.

2-stage titration
In a 2-stage titration two end points are determined, one after the other. Each end point
refers to one determinant, so that two different parameters can be determined. In some
cases a third determinant can be calculated from the results of the first two.

To be able to calculate a sample concentration, calibration factors are required that have to
be determined at regular intervals. For a 1-stage titration, a calibration can be carried out with
either one or two calibration solutions (1-point and 2-point calibrations). For a 2-stage titration,
two calibration solutions are measured, and two 1-point calibrations are carried out.
The chemical and mathematical basis of the concentration calculation is described in Appendix C.

3.6

Construction and layout

The Monitor 90 S consists of a compact housing that is wall-mounted. The front door contains
a display and a keypad for communication with the analyzer. The interior of the housing contains the following units:

Analyzer section
The analyzer section contains the measuring components where the chemical reaction
and the measurement take place. It is directly visible when opening the front door.

Control section
The control section is located at the rear of the analyzer plate that can be turned forward.
The control section regulates the operation of pumps and valves, calculates results, and

The analyzer section normally comprises the following main components:

Peristaltic pumps
Peristaltic pumps are used to meter the sample, reagents and calibration solutions. Each
pump has its own synchronous motor and gearbox, rotor, and one pump tube.

Magnetic valves
Magnetic valves switch between different reagents or calibration solutions. The sequence
program in the built-in computer controls them.

Low-sample / low dilution water detector

Sensors determine the presence or absence of sample and, if required, dilution water. If
any one runs out, the system automatically signals a warning.
The detector is temperature-operated. It is electrically heated, and cooled by the flow of
sample. The degree of cooling is proportional to the sample flow. When this drops below a
pre-set limit, an alarm is triggered.

Low-reagent detector (option)

The low-reagent detector checks if enough reagent is supplied. It is a negative-pressure
switch that consists of a membrane held in the closed position by the weight of liquid in a
tube. The membrane is separated from the reagent by a glass pressure buffer to prevent
direct contact with the membrane.

Waste vessel (if required)

The waste vessel receives used reagents and excess sample. Its outlet is connected to
the outside of the Monitor via a waste tube.

Bottles for reagents and calibration solutions

These solutions are kept in bottles at the bottom of the analyzer section and are pumped
into the measuring cell as required.
Ionometer

Measuring cell with electrode(s)

In the measuring cell are either a single electrode or a measuring and a reference electrode, depending on the method. The ions to be measured produce a voltage potential on
the electrode(s) that is proportional to the logarithm of the concentration of the measured
ion. The measuring cell is thermostatted.

Magnetic stirrer assembly

A magnetic stirrer assembly with a stirring magnet in the measuring cell ensures even
temperature distribution.

Kolorimeter/Silikometer

Mixer
In the mixer, sample and reagent(s) are mixed and undergo a reaction.

Photometer
In the photometer the light absorption of the reaction mixture is measured. The concentration of the measured component is calculated from the absorbance.

MT5-50EN-06

Monitor 90S

Section 3 System description

29

The photometer may be installed horizontally or vertically.

Titrometer

Measuring cell with electrode(s)

The titration takes place in the measuring cell, where sample and reagent are mixed together and treated with the titration solution. According to the method, a single electrode
or a sample and reference electrode dip into the liquid. The output voltage from the electrode(s) is monitored during the titration to determine the end-point. Some systems also
contain a heating element or reductor.

Magnetic stirrer assembly

A magnetic stirrer assembly with a stirring magnet in the titration vessel ensures complete
mixing.

3.6.2

Control section
The control section contains the components used for system control, signal production and
data handling. It is located at the rear of the analyzer plate that can be turned forward.
An additional cover protects the components in the control section.

Details of the electrical connections are shown in the Terminal Diagram and the Wiring Diagram in Appendix A. The analyzer is controlled and monitored by a computer on the single
board.
An integrated microprocessor is used for:

Controlling the analysis program

Collecting analog data and converting it to digital information

Signal processing

Result calculation and presentation

Data storage and communication with external computers

Automatic function and error monitoring

Control input from the keypad or an external computer

The analysis cycle is factory-programmed by Bran+Luebbe. User changes are usually not
necessary. The Sequence program in Appendix A, "Technical Data" contains the details of
the individual system program for your system.
All important parameters such as limit values, calibration data, calibration frequency, temperatures etc. can be entered, viewed, changed and deleted via the keypad and display on the
front panel.

3.7

Single-stream and multi-stream operation

Monitor 90 S systems are usually factory-configured for single sample stream operation. For
some applications, the Ionometer, Kolorimeter and Silikometer can be fitted with up to 6 sample streams and an additional one for manual sample presentation. The Titrometer can be fitted with up to 4 sample streams.
The analysis sequence for multi-stream systems is determined by Parameter 10 (section 9.4)
and can be set as required. If one sample stream runs dry the system automatically proceeds
to the next.
The values from each sample stream are shown either in rotation, with a 2 second interval between each one, or the last available measurement is displayed until the next one is ready
(see parameter 53 in section 9.4).

Section 3 System description

3.8

Sample value output and display

31

The calculated concentration of the sample can be indicated in three ways.

Built-in display
When the system is in MEASURE mode the last available sample reading is shown on the
display (refer to section 6.3.1).
Multi-stream systems have two display options:
Rolling display The values from each sample stream are shown in rotation, with a 2 second interval between each one.
Single display

The last available measurement is displayed until the next one is ready,
so that for example sample 1 is displayed while sample 2 is being measured.

The display mode is selected with Parameter 53 (see section 9.4).

Titrometer
For a Titrometer, the values are displayed in a different way, because up to 3 sample values can be output per sample stream:
Single display

For 1-step Titrometer, the last available value of component A is displayed until the next one is ready, so that for example sample 1 is displayed while sample 2 is being measured. For 2-step Titrometer, the last
available values of components A, B and C of one sample stream are
shown in rotation until the next values are ready. The display changes after 2 seconds.

Rolling display For 1-step Titrometer, the values of component A from each sample
stream are shown in rotation, with a 2 second interval between each one.
For 2-step Titrometer, the values of components A, B and C of all sample
streams are shown in rotation (with a 2 second interval).
The display shows the number of the sample stream (1-4), the component (A, B or C) and
the calculated concentration value, e.g.:
1A

80.2

Control room output

An analog output signal proportional to the measured value is available, so that the measured values can be displayed in a control room, for example. Other analog signals are
provided for a general alarm and for sample limits. Details on the connections are given in
section 4.

Printer output
With the optional interface, a printer with at least 80 characters per line can be used to
show measured values and/or warning and informative messages. The data can be
printed automatically or on demand. See section 10 for details.

Terminal or computer output

An external computer or terminal can communicate with the system via an RS485 interface and, for example read out sample values or error messages. The terminal connection
can either be direct or via a modem.
For further information see next section and the separate Monitor 90 Computer Connection Operation Manual.
As most modems are configured with an RS232C interface, a common RS485/RS232C
converter must be connected between the Monitor 90 and the modem.

3.9

Printer and computer connection

Either a printer or a computer can be connected to the Monitor 90 S. For this purpose, the
Monitor is provided with a standard RS232C interface. If required, it can be retrofitted with an
RS485 interface.

Printer connection
Sample value, calibration data, error messages and alarms can be printed.
You will find further information on printing and printer requirements in section 10.

Computer connection
An external computer can be used to control and monitor one or more Monitor 90 analyzers.
If more than one Monitor is to control, the RS485 interface must be used which allows
controlling up to 31 Monitors.
The computer (master) and Monitor work in master-and-slave mode. The computer always initiates the communication. Data communication follows a fixed STX-ETX protocol
with software handshake using ASCII characters.
Details are described in the manual for the Monitor 90 computer connection.

Technical data
The maximum communication cable lengths are:
RS232C: ca. 10 m (at 9600 Baud)
RS485: ca. 1000 m (at 9600 Baud).
Character format: Data transfer is asynchronous and character and bit-serial. Data bits,
parity and stop bits are selectable; the following are recommended:

Printer: 2400 Baud, parity even, 7 data bits, 2 stop bits.

PC: 9600 Baud, parity even, 7 data bits, 1 stop bit (according to DIN 66348 part 2).

Operating area requirements (section 4.4)

Operating conditions
For trouble-free operation the system should be used only under the following conditions:

4.3

Free from unidirectional heat radiation or direct sunlight.

Vibration-free mounting.

In conformity with the specified environmental conditions for the system: special protective
installation (e.g. a ventilated cabin) is needed in areas where corrosive gas or vapor may
occur or where there is risk of explosion.

Atmospheric and sample temperature between 15 and 35C.

The system must not be used outdoors, but always in a building or cabin conforming to
the above requirements, with temperature control if necessary.

The sample must be homogenous and particle-free. If it is not, a Filtration system must be
used (e.g. for systems in waste water treatment works). Contact Bran+Luebbe for details.

Section 4 Installation

37

Electrical installation
Danger:
Make electrical connections according to VDE or local regulations.
Only a qualified electrician should carry out electrical installation.
Follow these basic rules for installation:

Lead all cables through PG cable fixings into the housing.

Lay power and signal cables in separate conduits.

Lay the signal cables so that they will be free of inductive interference.

Use only screened cable for signal leads, and connect the screens to the Monitor housing.

The following connections must be established:

Power cable
The power cable is lead through a stuffing box on the top of the Monitor housing.
The Monitor voltage is factory set to 230V 50 Hz unless otherwise specified. Voltage
variations of 10% and frequency variations of 5% are acceptable.
The normal power requirement is 150 VA.
Warning:
Do not plug in the power cord yet, because this would start the Monitor.

General and limit alarms and sample value signal outputs

Outputs are provided to transmit the system and limit alarm signals to a central control
room or computer.
The maximum contact loading for the alarm outputs is 25 V AC, 60 V DC, 3 A.
In addition, a 0/4 - 20 mA analog signal output is provided for each sample stream to
transmit the current sample values to a central control room or computer.
Maximum permissible load is 400 . Parameter 51 determines whether the zero point is
at 0 or 4 mA (see section 9.4).
Systems without additional connection box
The contacts are found in the control section behind the hinged analyzing plate. The following diagram shows the relevant part of the control board.

User connections

The accessory board C is only installed on multiple sample line devices. It is mounted on
spacing bolts and connected to the main board with the ribbon cable B and the connector
A. On devices with more than 4 sample lines a second accessory board is installed on top
of the first one.
Contact positions:

As seen in the picture, the RS485 interface is located on the main board on the bottom left side on the terminal block X7. This interface is used to connect the Monitor to
a bus system and for communication with a server. For more details see manual
Monitor 90 computer connection.

The RS232 interface for printer connection is located just to the right on terminal block
X8. For more details refer to chapter 10.

Section 4 Installation

39

On the very left the terminal block X6 contains the alarm contacts and the analog output for sample line 1. The exact position of the several contacts is shown on sheet 2 of
the wiring diagram in appendix A.

The first accessory board contains the limit alarm contacts for sample lines 2 to 4 on
terminals X33 and the analog contacts on terminals X34. The exact position of the individual contacts is shown on sheet 6 of the wiring diagram in appendix A if supplied
with your Monitor.

The second accessory board contains the limit alarm contacts for sample lines 5 to 7
on terminals X33 and the analog contacts on terminals X34. The exact position of the
individual contacts is shown on sheet 7 of the wiring diagram in appendix A if supplied
with your Monitor.

The terminals are connected with a maximum of 3 cables, shielded, each having 12 conductors with a cross-section of 0.25 mm2:
1. Lead the connection cable(s) through a PG cable fixing on top of the Monitor.
2. To access the control section, loosen the knurled nut on the left-hand side of the analyzer plate and swing the plate forward. The control section is mounted at the rear of
the analyzer plate.
3. Next lead the cables from the bottom through the matching rubber bushings.
4. Remove the cable insulation and fit the conductors with conductor end bushings. The
shield is twisted and connected with the device earth.
5. Now connect each conductor following the wiring diagram in appendix A, close the
control section and fasten the PG cable fixings.
6. When two accessory boards are fitted (e.g. for more than 4 sample streams) the top
board must be temporarily removed to gain access to the terminals on the first board.
Loosen the cables from position A and B and unscrew the four nuts that fix the board
on the spacing bolts.

Systems with an additional connection box

The contacts are lead into a connection box on top of the housing:
1. Lead the cable(s) through one of the PG cable fixings into the connection box.
2. Connect the contacts as shown for X50 in the Terminal Diagram in Appendix A. Fasten the PG cable fixings.

Printer or computer output options

The printer connection is described in section 10. The computer option is described in the
additional manual "Monitor 90 Computer Connection".

4.3.3

Tubing connections to the Monitor

MT5-50EN-06

Make the following tubing connections:

Sample inlet, sample overflow, dilution or rinsing solution (if required) and waste
outlet
These tubing connections enter through stuffing boxes in the Monitor base. More details
are shown in the Tubing Diagram in Appendix A.
For each of these tubing connections, proceed as follows:
1. If the tube in the Monitor is not yet connected to the stuffing box, remove the nut from
one side of the stuffing box and slide it over the tube.
2. Push the tube fully onto the stuffing box.
It may be necessary to slightly stretch the tube end with needle-nose pliers and wet it
with de-ionized water. PVC tubes can be heated to about 35C.
3. Fasten the nut.
4. Remove the 2 nuts from the other side of the stuffing box and insert it from above in
the corresponding opening in the Monitor base.
5. Fasten the first nut from below, then repeat steps 2 and 3 for the external tube connection (PVC tube, 3x1.5 mm).
Warning:
Sample inlet and waste outlet must be pressure-free.
As some reagents are corrosive, the entire waste system must be chemically resistant.
Observe local regulations concerning disposal of chemical waste into the public sewage
system.

Pressure buffer for optional low reagent detector

Below the low-reagent detector is a glass expansion chamber that prevents reagent
reaching the detector membrane. The expansion chamber is packed separately to prevent
damage during transport.
Remove the packing and connect the expansion chamber as shown.

Pump tubes
In order to prolong the life of the pump tubes, they are removed from the pumps before
shipping. To install them, proceed as follows:
1. Loosen the knurled screws and remove the pump platen (Fig. 4.3).
2. Place the pump tube around the rotor, being careful not to twist the tube.
Warning:
Make sure that the liquid inlet tube is always connected to the upper
pump tube connection.
3. Plug in the power cord and wait until the system code appears on the display.

Operating area requirements

Because chemicals will be used in the operating area, some special conditions are required:

42

Bran+Luebbe Monitor 90 S Ionometer / Kolorimeter / Silikometer / Titrometer

MT5-50EN-06

Good ventilation
The exhaust air must be directed away from areas where people work. Some
Bran+Luebbe Monitors contain a fan that exhausts hazardous gases such as reagent vapors. Direct the waste air via a trunk to outside the working area.

Hazard labeling
Working areas where hazardous materials are used must be labeled by:

Warning signs which indicate possible dangers

Instructions to wear suitable protective clothing

Warning signs such as smoking or access restriction

Information such as the location of the nearest first aid station or emergency procedures.

Safety equipment for first aid

The working area should be equipped with eyewashes and personal protective apparatus
such as safety glasses, gloves, overalls and boots.

5.1

Overview

43

After installation, the system can be started up. This consists of the following steps:

Preparing the system: filling reagent bottles, preparing electrodes if necessary (section
5.2).

Setting the detectors for low sample and for low dilution water, if used (section 5.3).

Starting the measuring process (section 5.4).

Decommissioning, or shutdown, is described in section 5.5.

5.2

Preparing the system for start-up

This section assumes that the system is ready for use, with tubing and electrical connections
prepared as described in the previous chapter.
1. Place the reagent containers in the bottom of the analyzer.
2. If dilution water is required, make sure that de-ionized or drinking water (as specified
in the Main Data Sheet in Appendix A) is available and connected.
3. Place the dip tubes into the appropriate reagent and calibrator bottles and screw down
the caps.
Ionometer/Titrometer
4. Carefully remove the measuring cell lid and fill with tap water up to the overflow.
Do not use distilled water: the conductivity is too low!
5. Replace the lid.
6. Carefully unpack the electrode(s) and prepare them for use according to the instructions in the packet.
7. Insert the electrode(s) into the lid of the measuring cell as described in the instructions
in the packet. Fig. 5.1 shows a schematic diagram of the lid and the position of the
various openings.

Adjusting the detectors for low sample and dilution

water
For each sample stream, and if used, for the dilution water supply, a sensor is used which detects the presence or absence of liquid and triggers an alarm if the flow drops below a previously set flow rate.
The detectors are thermal sensors that are continuously heated and cooled by the flowing liquid. The temperature drop is proportional to flow, and is continuously monitored.
Before starting the Monitor, each detector must be set to the correct flow rate, normally 1 l/h.
This is necessary because the detectors may become maladjusted during transport.

Section 5 Commissioning/Decommissioning

45

Fig. 5.2 shows a low-sample or low-dilution water detector. As long as sufficient liquid is flowing, the LED is lit. When the flow rate drops below the set value the LED goes out and the
warning light "sample" on the Monitor front panel blinks.

Fig. 5.2:

Low-sample and low-dilution water detector

The correct point for the flow rate that is necessary to provide enough sample must be adjusted during the commissioning. The flow rate should be 2 l/h.
A flow meter is required to set the sample flow rate accurately.
To adjust the low sample and/or low dilution water detector:
1. Loosen the sample tubing above the detector and connect a flow meter.
2. Start the sample flow, e.g. for systems connected to a filtration system by starting the
latter.
3. Plug in the power cord to switch on the Monitor. A self-test routine for the display is
shown.
4. When the code for system type appears on the display, press
mode (see section 6.3 for description of operating modes).

serv

5. Adjust the sample flow to 0.5 l/h, e.g. by using the filtrate pump control on the filtration
system (if connected).
6. If the LED lights, turn the adjustment screw on the detector anti-clockwise, using the
screwdriver supplied, until the LED just goes out.
If the LED does not light, turn the screw clockwise until it just lights.
7. Increase sample flow to 1 l/h. The LED must now light, and the "sample" light on the
display panel must extinguish and the error message disappears. If not, repeat the adjustment procedure.
8. Stop the sample flow, e.g. by switching off the filtration, and make sure the LED goes
out (after a short delay), the "sample" light on the panel blinks and "Error 11" is displayed. If not, repeat the adjustment procedure.
9. Unplug the Monitor and disconnect the flow meter.

46

Automatic analysis cycle
No further user action is normally necessary now, as the program sequence and the operating parameters are factory-entered.
Sample value(s) will be displayed after the first measuring cycle is complete. On singlestream Monitors each new sample value over-writes the previous one, and the latest value is
on the display and in the system memory. On multi-stream systems you can choose between
rolling and single display modes, according to the value of Parameter 53 (see section 9.4).
Some systems running at very low levels may show relatively high drift on start-up. This is
due to tubing contamination, and will stabilize, normally after a few hours.
For an Ionometer, electrodes must operate for several hours to reach stability.
Monitors containing a heating element may show the error message "Error 61" (low temperature) when first switched on. When the set temperature is reached the warning will extinguish
and the Monitor will start the analysis cycle automatically.
If necessary, you can display the parameters and alter them, e.g. the calibration frequency or
the sample limits. This is fully described in section 9 where you also find the general parameter list. The parameter list for your individual system is shown in Appendix A.
Warning:
Do not go outside limits shown in the Main Data Sheet in Appendix A, otherwise the measuring operation may be disturbed.

In MEASURING mode the Monitor measures the concentration of the sample and shows the
current value the display. "Busy" lamp is lit.
For multi-stream systems, the values from each sample stream are shown either in rotation,
with a 2 second interval between each one, or the last available measurement is displayed
until the next one is ready (see parameter 53 in section 9.4). The current values for the other
sample streams are stored in memory and can be recalled with the conc key.
The mathematical principles for calculating the sample values are described in Appendix C.
The computer automatically checks for results exceeding sample limits, and whether sample
and reagent supply is OK and the calibration parameters are acceptable.

6.3.2

CALIBRATION mode
The Monitor must be calibrated at regular intervals. This occurs during CALIBRATION mode,
when the necessary valves are activated to introduce the calibration solution(s).
The calibration cycle can be started automatically, according to the data entered in Parameter
38, manually with the cal key, or externally via Parameter 18 (see also section 9.4).
Parameter 38 offers three possibilities:
1

only automatic calibration

only manual calibration

manual and automatic calibration

MT5-50EN-06

Monitor 90S

Section 6 Operation

55

A precondition for successful automatic calibration is that the calibration standards are stable.
If they are not, they must be freshly prepared and the calibration started manually each time.
Frequency of calibration depends on individual applications and operating conditions: 24
hours is normal.
The mathematical principles for calculating the calibration factors are described in Appendix
C.
The Monitor determines the calibration factors automatically and stores them. Calibration
warning limits and operating limits are factory-programmed. After each calibration the system
checks whether the limits have been exceeded. There are the following possibilities:

Successful calibration
If the calibration is within limits the new calibration factors are written into the corresponding parameters and the Monitor automatically enters MEASURING mode.

Warning limits are exceeded

If the calibration factors are outside the warning limits the "slope" light blinks. Pressing
info displays the error code. For corrective action see section 8.2.

Operating limits exceeded

If the calibration factors are outside the operating limits a new calibration is initiated automatically, in case the cause of the error was an exceptional one such as an air bubble in a
reagent or calibrator. If the values for the second calibration are also outside the operating
limits the Monitor enters ERROR mode and displays an error message.
The factors from the last calibration can be displayed in TEST function (section 6.4.6).
For corrective action see section 8.2.
After clearing the cause, press cal . If the calibration factors are within the operating limits,
the Monitor automatically enters MEASURE mode again.

6.3.3

SERVICE mode
SERVICE mode should always be selected when performing routine maintenance such as
changing reagents or pump tubes, or clearing leaks and spills.
Entering and leaving SERVICE mode
Press the serv key to enter SERVICE mode. The current analysis or calibration cycle proceeds to the end, and the light on the serv key blinks during this time. The light stays on
when the cycle is finished: then all pumps are switched off and valves are closed. The last
measured values are stored. In systems with temperature control, this is maintained.
SERVICE mode can also be entered externally via Parameter 18 (see section 0).
Warning:
Switch off the Monitor when working on heated components. Otherwise there
is a risk of burning yourself, or the component may overheat.

56

Bran+Luebbe Monitor 90 S Ionometer / Kolorimeter / Silikometer / Titrometer

MT5-50EN-06

SERVICE mode may be entered immediately after power on, within 5 seconds of the system
and software version being displayed, without having to wait for the end of the analysis cycle.
It can also be entered immediately when the Monitor is showing an error message.
Pressing the serv key again exits SERVICE mode. The Monitor then returns to MEASURING
or CALIBRATION mode.

6.3.4

ERROR mode
The Monitor continuously checks itself for errors in the analysis cycle, component failure, internal data transmission and correct computer function. If a fault is detected the system automatically enters ERROR mode.
When this occurs, the system reacts as follows:

Analysis is interrupted

Calibration is impossible

The system alarm output is activated

An error message blinks on the built-in display.

Not all errors trigger the system alarm. Details of individual errors, their consequences and corrective action are given in section 8.

While in ERROR mode, SERVICE mode can be entered by pressing the serv key. Both
modes are then active, and all SERVICE functions are available.
After an error has been corrected the system automatically returns to MEASURE mode. If an
error is still present when exiting SERVICE mode, it will be shown on the display and ERROR
mode will be maintained.

6.4

The functions
As well as the operating modes MEASURE, CALIBRATE, SERVICE and ERROR, the Monitor
has six further functions: PUMP, INFO, DATA, TEST, PRINT and CONCENTRATION. When
these functions are activated the current operating mode continues. For example, if the system is in MEASURE mode and PRINT is activated, measurement continues.
The table below summarizes the functions, how to enter and leave them, and their purpose.

6.5

Manual sampling option

To be able to analyze manually supplied samples, the automatic analysis cycle can be interrupted and a manual sampling sequence can be programmed. Required hardware for this
purpose is either a special sample stream for manual sampling or an existing normal sample
stream.
Manual sampling is only possible for systems running in cyclic mode, not in continuous mode.
Sample stream requirements
Usually an extra sample stream is used for manual sampling. This is a fully equipped sample
stream with magnetic valve, peristaltic pump and signal and alarm outputs. However, sample
supply is not automatic, but manual. For example, the sample tubing can be immersed in a
beaker filled with sample.
If an existing normal sample stream is used temporarily for manual sample presentation, the
automatic sample supply must be interrupted. For this purpose, switch off the filtration (if
used) and clamp off the sample supply tubing before the analyzer. Use a suitable clamp such
as artery forceps or a small locking wrench. Then remove the sample tubing in the analyzer
from the PG stuffing box at the bottom of the housing and, for example, immerse the tubing in
a beaker with the sample to be analyzed.

61

Starting manual sampling

Before starting, make sure that the sample stream used for manual sampling is included in
the number of sample streams entered in the first level of Parameter 10 (see also section
9.4). However, this sample stream should not appear in the automatic sampling sequence in
the second level of Parameter 10.
For manual sampling, a sequence of up to 7 sample streams can be entered which will then
be analyzed one after the other. At the end of this sequence the sample value for the last
measured sample stream is displayed (the interim results of the other sample streams are not
displayed).
Usually, the sample stream for manual sampling is analyzed several times successively in order to eliminate carryover effects. In addition, depending on the sample tubing length, it can
take several analysis cycles before the sample has reached the measuring system and the
sample value is representative.

Summary

Section 7 Maintenance

63

The Monitor must be regularly maintained to ensure proper operation. We recommend that a
maintenance log be kept, to give a record of routine servicing and system performance data,
and to serve as a useful data sheet for Bran+Luebbe service engineers or for telephone troubleshooting. A blank log sheet is provided at the end of this chapter.
A summary of routine maintenance is shown below. Refer to the following sections for complete descriptions of maintenance activities.
The maintenance intervals given below are only approximate values. Depending on the environmental conditions shorter intervals may be necessary.

Section 7 Maintenance

65

Weekly maintenance
Check valves for proper function
Make sure the valves click audibly when they operate.
Check that waste outlet is clear
The sample and reagent drain must be clear and free from backpressure.
Check reagent supply and refill if necessary

7.4

Monthly maintenance
Check valves for leaks
1. Press serv to place the system into SERVICE mode.
2. Carefully loosen the tubing above the valve with a screwdriver.
Sample valve:
When working properly, no liquid should leave the nipple when the valve is closed.
If sample leaks through the valve, first check that sample flow rate and pressure are
correct. If reducing the sample flow does not solve the problem, the valve must be replaced.
Calibration valve:
If the valve is airtight the reagent must not sink down the tube when the exit tubing is
removed. If it does, the valve must be replaced.
3. Replace tubing onto valve nipple.
4. Press serv again to return the Monitor to normal measuring mode.
Check pumps
Check that the pumps are pumping liquid by introducing an air bubble into each line and
following its progress along the tube. (For reagents, briefly lift the reagent dip tube out of
the reagent: for sample, briefly open the inlet tubing).
If the air bubble does not move, the pump tube may be worn out, the pump platen not correctly seated or the rotors may be defective.

Check pump rotors for possible damage and for quiet operation
If scratches or defects are visible on the rollers, or if excessive play is visible, the rotor
must be renewed.

66

MT5-50EN-06

Check tubing
Look for dirt, algae, leaks, blockages and general condition.
If the tubes are very dirty, clean them with dilute hypochlorite solution:
1. Press

serv

to enter SERVICE mode

2. Ionometer/Titrometer:
Remove the electrode(s) from the measuring cell lid.
Ionometer NH4+, NO3-, NOx, F-, K- and DOC: slowly remove the measuring electrode
while gently rotating it in a clockwise direction!
Warning:
Electrodes must not come into contact with hypochlorite solution; otherwise they may be permanently damaged.
3. Using a screwdriver, carefully remove the lower tube from the sample pump.
4. Using a syringe, inject 50 ml dilute hypochlorite solution (commercial degree hypochlorite, 13% chlorine, diluted 1:10 with tap water). Repeat if necessary to remove
all contamination.
Danger:
Avoid hypochlorite contact with skin, eyes or mucous membranes.
Wear protective glasses and gloves.
TYGON tubing that has become milky in appearance will not interfere with correct
function.
5. Using a syringe rinse at least 3 times with water to remove all traces of hypochlorite,
which could otherwise damage the electrode.
6. Ionometer/Titrometer:
Replace electrodes as described in the instructions in the packet.
7. Replace tube onto pump and press serv to exit SERVICE mode.
If a filtration is connected, you could also pump dilute hypochlorite solution from the filtration to the Monitor (when cleaning the filter tubes).
However, remember to remove electrodes from measuring cell!
If this cleaning procedure does not remove contamination, or if tubes are leaking, replace
them. When installing new tubing, slightly stretch the end with needle-nose pliers and
moisten the tubing before pushing it onto the connector.
Ionometer/Titrometer

Top up electrode filling solution (only for Ag/AgCl reference electrode)

For methods where an Ag/AgCl reference electrode is used, top up the outer internal
chamber up to the mark, using the electrode filling solution (electrolyte) specified in the
Main Data Sheet in Appendix A. The level of this solution should be a few centimeters
higher than the level in measuring cell, so that hydraulic pressure causes the outer solution to slowly permeate into the measuring cell.

67

Checking Electrodes
Electrodes have a limited life, which depends on the electrode type and the sample being
measured. Check electrodes monthly and replace them annually. Always keep a spare
electrode available.
To check electrode performance, compare the current calibration values with the upper
and lower calibration operating limits Uo and m shown in Appendix A. To do this, press
test and the and keys to call up the values for c1 and c2 (see section 6.4.6).
If the calibration factors are approaching the operating limits, the electrode maintenance
procedure should be carried out, as described in the data sheet packed with each electrode.

Section 8 Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

8.1

Overview

75

Errors in the analyzer or the computer are shown on the display. There are two classes of error:

Errors stopping the analysis

If one of these errors occurs the analysis is normally interrupted and the Monitor enters
ERROR mode. The display shows the error code.

Errors not stopping the analysis

If one of these errors occurs the analysis continues and the error is indicated by a blinking
triangle on the display; for example, "slope" if a calibration constant is outside the warning
limits. Pressing the info -key then shows the error code.

After an error is cleared the analysis normally restarts automatically. Some errors, however,
(such as a reagent running out) require remedial action with the analyzer. In this case, the
serv -key must be pressed before you can clear the fault.
The subsequent sections contain:

Error code list (section 8.2)

This lists every error and describes the means to clear it.

Displaying and changing operating parameters

All the parameters needed for system operation are stored in the parameter list that can be
called up via the DATA function. They can be displayed or changed.
This is not normally necessary, as all Parameters are factory-entered. However, you may
want to change some parameters such as calibration interval, limit values or print commands.
Warning:
Parameters should only be changed by staff with proper training, or on the
advice of Bran+Luebbe service, as incorrectly entered values can cause serious errors in results.
The parameter list consists of the following blocks:

105

Additional explanation of Parameter 12 (conversion factors)

Ionometer/Kolorimeter/Silikometer
If, for example, a nitrate system is calibrated with a solution whose concentration is defined in
terms of N, and the sample result is desired in terms of NO3, the required conversion factor
can be entered as Parameter 12.
The Main Data Sheet in Appendix A shows in which units the system was factory-calibrated.
Commonly used conversion factors are:
1 ppm NO3

= 0,226 ppm NO3-N (nitrate nitrogen)

1 ppm NO3-N

= 4,427 ppm NO3

1 ppm PO4

= 0,326 ppm PO4-P (phosphate phosphorus)

1 ppm PO4-P

= 3,066 ppm PO4

1 ppm NH4

= 0,776 ppm NH4-N (ammonia nitrogen)

1 ppm NH4-N

= 1,288 ppm NH4

1 ppm NH3

= 0,822 ppm NH4-N

1 ppm NH4-N

= 1,216 ppm NH3

(1 ppm

= 1 mg/l)

If you change Parameter 12, multiply the measuring range and limit values (Parameters 21-24) with the new factor and enter the new values. Otherwise the
limit alarms will be falsely triggered. The new values may safely be rounded up
or down.
Example:
From Main Data Sheet:

Range:

0 - 5 ppm NO3-N

Alarm limit:

4 ppm

The Monitor is set to display values as NO3 by entering a conversion factor of 4.427. This produces the following values (not rounded values in brackets):
New data in Parameter list:

Range:

0-20 (22.135) ppm NO3

Alarm limit:

18 (17.708) ppm

Titrometer
A system measuring for example dH can output the results as BH if the appropriate factor is
entered in Parameter 12.
If you change Parameter 12, multiply the range and limit values (Parameters 2124) with the new factor and enter the new values. Otherwise the limit alarms
will be falsely triggered. The new values can be rounded.

Additional explanation of Parameter 18 (remote control of

SERVICE and CALIBRATE mode)
Parameter 18 determines if remote control of SERVICE and CALIBRATE mode is possible
from an SPC, for example. For this purpose, the digital inputs originally intended for low reagent and low dilution water can be used. 0 or 24 V DC switches these inputs.
Parameter 18 provides the following options:
Level 1

SERVICE mode is activated externally by:

Not used
LO-HI edge on low reagent input
HI-LO edge on low reagent input
LO-HI edge on low dilution water input
HI-LO edge on low dilution water input

0
1
2

4

An input used for remote control looses its original function, i.e. the reagent or dilution water
supply can no longer be checked.
Note that these inputs are not decoupled, i.e. if they are used for remote control, the potentials must be separated, for example by means of a relay. In addition, the signal must be present for more than 1 second to set the desired mode.
For the connection, see the Terminal diagram in appendix A.

9.4.3

Additional explanation of Parameters 21-27 (limit alarm)

The 3rd and 4th level of Parameters 21-27 set the values at which the limit alarm contacts
close and an error message appears on the display. There are three ways of setting the
alarm:

Maximum alarm: Lower limit is set to 0, upper limit to e.g. 60, Parameter 54 (suppress
negative results) to 1. The contact closes and alarm status is activated when the sample
concentration is greater than or equal to 60.

Minimum alarm: Lower limit is set to 40, upper limit to 0. Alarm status when sample concentration is 40 or below.

Range alarm: Lower limit 40, upper limit 60. Alarm status when sample concentration falls
outside these limits. In range alarm mode the Monitor does not distinguish between concentrations above or below the set values.

108

MT5-50EN-06

Systems are factory set in maximum alarm mode.

9.4.4

Additional explanation of Parameter 56 (distribution of Outputs 1 - 4)

The Monitor 90 S contains 4 current outputs for measured values.
In a 2-stage titration up to 3 values per sample stream can be generated. This means that in
systems with more than one stream a choice must be made as to which values are output.
The available results are distributed between the 4 available outputs by using a code. Each
output comprises:

Measured value shown on the display

Possibility of entering measuring range and limits (Parameters 21-24)

Error message on the display if result is outside limit values

0/4-20mA analogue output and alarm contact.

made.

9.4.5

Additional explanation to parameter 11 and 61

The parameter 61 contains all necessary settings for a thermostatted circuit. The set point
temperature and the lower and upper limit of the acceptable temperature are set here. To activate the circuit the parameter 11 must be set to 1.
For the Ionometer type the temperature of the sample must be measured or kept constant.
If parameter 11 is set to 0 the temperature measurement is deactivated and internally a temperature of 25C is simulated. Temperature compensation does not take place.
To realize a temperature measurement without control but with compensation, parameter 11
must be set to 1. In parameter 61 the set point must be set lower than the possibly lowest
sample or environmental temperature. Best setting would be 0C. The lower limit should be
set to 0C too, the higher limit to 100C. With these settings a temperature measurement is
done but without control.
For a control the set point must be higher than the possibly highest sample or environmental
temperature. The lower limit must be lower and the higher limit higher than the set point to react correctly on the faulty temperature control.

In dilute solutions, the potential between the electrodes in the measuring cell is proportional to

Uo and m are the calibration factors. They are automatically determined by the Monitor during
each calibration.
On calibration, two solutions of known concentration are sequentially pumped into the measuring cell in place of sample, and the resulting voltages are recorded.
The calibration factors are calculated from the following equation:

A.1.1 Calibration with known concentration

During the calibration with known concentration two solutions with known concentrations are
measured. The resulting voltage between the electrodes is measured and then calculated following:

Kolorimeter and Silikometer

The sample concentration is calculated by photometry, comparing the color produced in a reaction solution with a standard of known concentration to the color produced by an unknown
sample. This relies on the principle that when light of a certain wavelength is absorbed by colored material in solution the absorbance is dependant on the concentration of the colored material, the length of the light path and the type of material. For dilute solutions the following relationship holds: this is known as the Lambert-Beer law:
I
E = lg 0 = C d
I

= absorbance

I0

= original light intensity

= reduced light intensity

C = concentration of measured substance

U = measured voltage

= molecular absorbance coefficient

= path length of colored solution in the measuring cell

In this equation d gives the slope.

The measurement takes place in the photometer. Here, it is not the light intensity itself that is
directly measured, but the electric current generated by the light in a photo-detector. The current is directly proportional to light intensity.
The photometer consists of two almost identical assemblies each containing a light source
and a detector. The light source is either a light-emitting diode (LED) or a halogen lamp with a
filter. The light, in a narrow wavelength band, causes the detector to produce an output current proportional to light intensity. The photometer assembly may also contain lenses and apertures for light direction.
One of the two photometers contains a flow cell through which the liquid whose absorbance is
to be measured passes. Color in the liquid causes a reduction in light reaching the detector.
The other photometer contains no flow cell and serves as a reference. The reference measurement takes place simultaneously with the sample measurement.
The two detector currents are used to calculate the concentration of the measured component, as follows:

IM
c = A log
c + P F

IB

A-4

Bran+Luebbe Monitor 90 S Ionometer / Kolorimeter / Silikometer / Titrometer

= concentration of measured component

= calibration factor (slope of calibration curve)

MT5-50EN-06

IMc = current from sample detector

IBc = current from reference detector
c = calibration factor (intercept or zero offset)
F

= conversion factor (Parameter 12)

= additive correction value (Parameter 13)

d from the first equation is used as A.

Calibration factors C and A are calculated during calibration, which must occur at regular intervals.
Calibration
During calibration two solutions of different concentrations are analyzed in sequence.
First a zero or blank solution is measured. This establishes the value of the zero offset. According to the application, this solution may be a calibration solution with none or some reagents, or distilled water with all reagents. The absorbance is around zero.
Second, a calibration solution with a high concentration is measured, which will give a high
absorbance in the flow cell.
From these two measurements the calibration factors A and C are determined from the following equations:
cK

A=
log

IM

IB

log

c = A log

IM

IB

IM

IB

cK = concentration of high calibration solution

A

= calibration factor (slope of calibration curve)

IMN = current from sample detector during zero measurement

IBN = current from reference detector during zero measurement
IMK = current from sample detector during high measurement
IBK = current from reference detector during high measurement
c = calibration factor (intercept or zero offset)
The values for the two calibration factors are stored and used to calculate sample results until
the next successful calibration.
In some applications the zero offset C is determined before each measurement and subtracted from the measured result (for example, when the sample is colored). Parameter 16
sets this.

Titrometer
The Titrometer analyses aqueous samples by the principle of potentiometric titration. A measured volume of sample is treated with an accurately dosed titrant and during the titrant addition the electrode output is monitored. Titrant is added until the point of the change in electrode output is reached which indicates the end point of the titration. Electrodes are used for
each application that respond to the type of ion or ions being measured.
A common example is the determination of acid concentration. The titrant in this case is a
base, or alkali, and the concentration of H+ ions is measured in the reaction vessel. As more
base is added, the concentration of H+ ions decreases; the rate of decrease depends on the
concentration of H+ and OH- ions already in the reaction mixture. The end-point in this titration
is the point of maximum rate of change, or point of inflection of the titration curve, as shown in
Figure C.1.
The volume of titrant that was added at the end point is proportional to the concentration of
the substance being measured in the sample. Because the titrant is added by a pump at a
constant rate, it is also proportional to the titration time. The exact concentration of the titrant
or flow rate of the pump need not be known, because the system is calibrated with a standard
of known concentration which is analyzed in the same way as samples.

Example of a titration curve

Two types of titration are possible on the Monitor 90 Titrometer: 1-stage and 2-stage titration.

A.3.1 1-stage titration

In a 1-stage titration, a single titrant is added until the end point is reached, and the sample
concentration is calculated from the following equation:

Calibration is with one or two calibration solutions according to whether the calibration graph
is linear or 2nd-order (see Figure C.2). The Monitor calculates calibration factors A and B.
For a linear calibration, calibration factor B = 0, i.e. the quadratic coefficient of the equation B
tT2 = 0. For a non-linear calibration B ~ 0.
The following explanation describes 1- and 2-point calibrations in more detail.

2-point calibration
Two calibration solutions of known concentration CK1 and CK1 are titrated and the times to the
end points are defined as t1 and t2. Calibration factors A and B are calculated as follows
B=

c K1 t K2 c K2 t K1

A.3.2 2-stage titration

In a 2-stage titration two end points are determined, one after the other. Each end point refers
to one determinant, so that two different parameters can be determined. In some cases a third
determinant can be calculated from the results of the first two.
Concentrations Ca and Cb for the first two parameters are determined from the equation
ca = F (A tTa + P)
cb = F (B tTb + P)
ca, cb:

= concentrations a and b

A, B:

= calibration factors

TTa, tTb:

= titration time a and b

The concentration of the third material, Cc, is calculated from the equation
c c = K ca + L c b
or
lg cc = K lg ca + L lg cb

concentrations a, b and c

K, L:

constants dependent on the parameters being measured

A-8

MT5-50EN-06

Whether the linear or logarithmic equation is used depends on whether Cc is calculated by

addition/subtraction or by multiplication/division. The equation is selected in level 3 of Parameter 15 in the Parameter list (see section 9.4).
Calibration
For a 2-stage titration two 1-point calibrations are used. Calibration factor A is calculated from
concentration CK1 and titration time tK1, and calibration factor B is calculated from concentration CK2 and titration time tK2.
A=

A.3.3 Back titration

Back titration is normally used for example, if the danger exists that the concentration of the
material that is titrated can change during titration. That can be caused on the one hand of the
evaporability of the material, on the other hand of disturbing secondary reactions, e.g. the oxidation of sulfite to sulfate, generated by atmospheric oxygen, which is induced and accelerated by the titration reaction (oxidation of the sulfite by iodine) noticeably.
In these cases one adds a measured volume of the solution to be measured into a surplus reaction solution and does titrate the not used reaction solution back. In the above example the
sulfite-containing sample is added into surplus iodine solution. The not reacted iodine is titrated back.
The concentration c is calculated with the following formula:
tT ~ V

A tT
c = c K
+ P F

= titrated volume

cK = calibration concentration
A

= calibration factor

tT = titration time
F

= conversion factor (set in parameter 12)

= additive correction value (set in Parameter 13)

MT5-50EN-06

Appendix A Mathematical principles

A-9

The volume of the titration solution is proportional to the titration time. The concentration then
results from the difference between calibration concentration and the titrated concentration.
Calibration:
With the calibration a solution with well-known concentration CK1 is titrated up to the indication
voltage. With the titration time tK1 the calibration factor A is then calculated.
A=
