Great news, the Strathmore hospital is finally

getting renovation money from the Alberta government. The hospital will receive $2.8 million dollars via the Alberta Infrastructure Maintenance Program and will begin the long-awaited renovations
in September 2016.
Deputy Premier and Minister of Health Sarah
Hoffman, President and CEO of Alberta Health Services Dr. Verna Yu, and the Director of AHS Rural
North Calgary Zone Marilyn McGregor arrived to
make the announcement at the hospital on July 13.
Local dignitaries in attendance were Derek Fildebrandt - Strathmore/Brooks MLA, Wheatland
County Reeve Glenn Koester, Town of Strathmore
councilors Steve Grajczyk and Bob Sobol, as well
as Mardell Bazant and Jo Wilson representing the
Strathmore Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.
We would like to acknowledge the ongoing support of the facility by the ladies of the Strathmore
Ladies Auxiliary. I know that you have put a lot of
effort into fundraising and opening programs, said
Dr. Yu.
We know that we cannot do any of this without all the hard work, commitment and generosity of auxiliaries, our trusts, our foundations and
absolutely the communities across the province.
It is only through these types of partnerships and
relationships with each other that we continue to
maintain and improve health services in Alberta. It
is a very significant investment, which is a very important part of helping our patients and Albertans
stay well. This renovation will specifically improve
patient care and access by increasing the number
of emergency department treatment spaces to 13
and improving overall space in other areas of the
hospital.
Deputy Health Minister Sarah Hoffman extended
her thanks to those involved with the project and
expressed her excitement about finally fulfilling a
promise that other governments had been unable
to provide.
Its great to be here today in your front lines. I
really appreciate having the opportunity to share
this good news together with the member from the
other side of the isle (Derek Fildebrandt, MLA),
said Hoffman.
Strathmore Hospital is proud to serve a high
volume of patients in our region, said Fildebrandt.
Securing these much needed updates to the hospital was my number one commitment made to the
people of Strathmore in the last election. I cant
wait for construction to begin.

Hospital finally to receive major upgrade!

Minister of Health Sarah Hoffman (l-r) and Strathmore/Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt
were on hand for the announcement of the renovation for the Strathmore Hospital on July
13. After years of waiting, more than $2.8M will be invested at the hospital to renovate
the emergency department, diagnostic imaging, laboratory, home care and rehabilitation.

Classic and custom car and truck fans
can get their fill at shows in Strathmore
and Rosebud this weekend.
On July 15 and 16, car buffs are invited
to attend the Strathmore Fun Runners 23rd
Annual Strathmore Show and Shine. Friday night is Cruise Night. The event opens
around 6 p.m., when Second Avenue is
closed off. The cruise itself starts around 8
p.m. and goes until 10 p.m., running down
Second Avenue.
Glenn Freeland, a Fun Runners member,
said Cruise Night usually features 75-100
vehicles.
The Show and Shine goes Saturday in
Strathmores Kinsmen Park. Freeland said
he expects to see 150 to 200 vehicles on
display. Many vehicles have already been
pre-registered, but Freeland said theres
lots of room for more vehicles, and they
may also be registered the morning of the
event. Registration starts at 9 a.m., and the
show runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The awards
are handed out at 4 p.m. The event also includes live entertainment, concessions and
vendors, and prizes for the public.
The Town of Strathmore is a big help
with making the Show and Shine possible, Freeland said. The town agrees to
shut down Second Avenue on Friday night,
and permit the club to use Kinsmen Park
on Saturday. Freeland also said 30-35 local businesses also sponsor the event. Call
Shawn at 403-931-9303 for tickets or more
information.
On Sunday, July 17, car and truck fans
can move down the road to the High Eagle
RV Park in Rosebud. High Eagle hosts the
6th Annual Gearheads Custom Classic Car
and Truck Show, where campground owner Ed Sonmor said he expects 40-70 cars to
be on display.
Pre-registration is encouraged, Sonmor
said, but vehicles may also be registered
at the event. Registration starts at 12 noon,
and the show is open from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Prizes will be given for the top entries.
Aaron Krabsen and the Cat Country
Band will perform live music. Corvette
Dave will serve his World Famous Prairie
Burgers, Sonmor said. There are door prizes and 50 / 50 draws for guests. The event
is sponsored by Harper Tire and Napa in
Drumheller, and Fountain Tire in Drumheller and Airdrie.
Call Ed or Jeanne at 403-677-2577 for information or to pre-register for the Gearheads Show. Sonmor invites guests to visit
the car show, then see the musical Tent
Meeting at Rosebud Theatre or the Passion
Play in Drumheller, on the same afternoon.

Farming family honoured

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

The Praeker family has been farming
on their land for almost 100 years and
their commitment to agriculture and
the community was rewarded on July
11.
Herman and Barb Praeker and their
five children were honoured during the
BMO Farm Family Awards, along with
16 other farming families, at the Calgary
Stampede. The families were treated to
a reception and a brunch, where they
were greeted by Oneil Carlier, Alberta
Minister for Agriculture and Forestry.
The Praekers were nominated for the
award by Wheatland County.
We are all very honoured, said Herman Praeker, head of the Praeker family farm. My two sons, Cole and Francis, actually farm with me. They have
kind of their own operations already.
And both my daughters they drive
combine for me. They help with the
cattle and stuff.

The most rewarding aspect of farming for Herman is that his family gets
to work alongside him and he gets to
pass on the family farm to them. Even
through hard economical times, the
family has stuck together because of
their passion for agriculture and Herman is proud of them.
The Praeker family farm all started
when Hermans grandfather also
named Herman moved to Canada
from Iowa in 1911 with two cousins.
He saw an ad in the newspaper for
land located 11 miles east and three
miles south of Strathmore and bought
it some time after. In 1918, his name
was officially signed on the land title.
The current Herman, the third child
out of seven, started helping his own
father when he was young and credited
his mother as a driving force for the
farm. She would drive the combine and
she introduced dairy cows to the farm.
These cows were eventually sold when
Herman and Barb began irrigating, but
they kept the 300 beef cattle they own

Every Moment Has A Moon

together with their sons.

The Praekers grow malt barley,
spring wheat, canola and field peas in a
four-year rotation.
One of the stipulations with the
award is the family must be involved in
the community; and the Preakers commitment to their community of Crowfoot meets that stipulation. The family has been heavily involved with the
upkeep of the baseball diamonds, and
Barb is part of the ladies club.
The BMO Farm Family Award is
awarded to southern Alberta farm families in recognition of their dedication
to agriculture and their community. It
also helps to promote urban and rural
relationships.

to assist us with the KARE Volunteer Driver Program. The purpose
of the KARE Volunteer Driver Program is to assist those who do not
have access to affordable, inter-municipal transportation (between
communities) for their Healthcare and personal appointments/errands.
Why Volunteer you ask? Volunteering is good for you. Experts report
that when you focus on someone other than yourself, it interrupts
tension producing patterns and increases physical and mental
health. Our volunteers with the KARE Volunteer Driver have a great
opportunity to meet and form relationships with our clients whose lives
are benefitting by your decision to volunteer. Volunteering impacts
our community in a way that changes lives for the better. You can

There is no cure for Alzheimers disease. With
the increasing number of Canadians over 65, what
can be done to ward off dementia diseases? Its best
to start early in life but its never too late to adopt
the following lifestyle changes: Dont smoke; be
physically active; eat a healthy diet (and keep alcohol
consumption to a minimum) and ensure your blood
pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels are
normal. No sure guarantee but you will reduce the
risk.
Drug names seem to be getting more difficult
to pronounce all the time. But there is a system.
Recently, many drug names end in mab are being
discovered. This suffix mab, refers to monoclonal
antibodies that prevent cancer cells from using
certain proteins they need to survive. They are part
of the new types of immunotherapy products being
used to treat cancer patients.
Small business owners put many extra hours to
keep their businesses running smoothly. Sometime,
work/home life balance suffers. In Australia, Go
Home On Time Day is practiced to remind people
that home life is as important as work life. Make it a
habit to get home on time at least once weekly.
We are halfway through summer and time to ask
if you are using your sunscreen properlyenough
of it and often enough. Sun exposure is a lot like
smoking. Damage is being done in small increments
then erupts in cancers down the road.
Keep your skin protected.

Members of Save the Rosebud hosted Strathmore-Brooks MLA Derek Fildebrandt at a town
hall meeting in Rosebud on June 27.
The meeting gave the 140 area residents in attendance a chance to voice their concerns regarding the proposed Badlands Motorsport Resort to
be located roughly five kilometres northeast of
the hamlet of Rosebud.
We had no idea how many people would show
up, said Wendy Clark, a member of Save the Rosebud. Id have been happy with 30 to 40 people
coming out, so 140 coming out shows how much
this matters to people.
In addition to the statements residents made at
the meeting, roughly 250 letters have been sent to
the Premier since then.
Frustrated by Kneehill County Councils response to their concerns about the impact the proposed resort will have on the environment, traffic and agriculture, members of Save the Rosebud
contacted Fildebrandt for a meeting.
We didnt think Derek could do much for us,
being a member of the opposition Wildrose Party,
but we called and he gave us a half-hour meeting

in Strathmore in May, said Clark.

The group took full advantage of the time, presenting Fildebrandt with the various reports and
submissions they had compiled addressing concerns with the project.
When we were done he [Fildebrandt] said a
half hour wasnt enough, said Clark.
Letters were written to Fildebrandt, and an invitation extended to take a float trip down the river
to see in person the area that would be impacted.
The result was Fildebrandt going out to tour the
area and meet with residents.
While Fildebrandt was clear at the meeting that
as an opposition MLA he was limited in what he
could do, he did say the area was an absolute
gem and something worth fighting for.
Fildebrandt is working on a meeting with Shannon Phillips, provincial Minister of Environment
and Parks.
We hope we can take her on a tour similar to
the one we took Derek [Fildebrandt] on and show
her in person this land we are fighting for, said
Clark.

What it means to be Canadian:

ratifying an updated agreement
on internal trade
KEN KOBLY
President & CEO of Alberta Chambers
of Commerce

First Ministers are expected to wrap-up the renegotiations for updating Canadas Agreement on
Internal Trade.
It is crucial work for strengthening our nation,
and we hope its been undertaken with the same
Canadian outlook CBC anchor Rex Murphy so
clearly distilled in his comment made during the
early days of the Fort McMurray fire: every citizen is your neighbour.
In their recent report on this issue, Tear Down
These Walls: Dismantling Canadas Internal Trade
Barriers, the Senate Committee on Trade, Banking and Finance, neatly connected the essence of
citizenship with the implications of a renewed
agreement.
Promoting the right all Canadians should have
without penalty to practice their profession,
do business, or purchase goods anywhere in
their country, the report stated: Let Canadas
150th year end as the country began a century
and a half ago: free of interprovincial/inter-territorial trade barriers. It will make our great nation
richer, both spiritually and financially.
We must make no mistake the promise and
character of what it means to be Canadian are at
the very heart of these negotiations.
Collaboration has been the cornerstone of our
nations prosperity, starting with the completion
of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The benefits of
working together then took shape in more efforts
vital to advancing the vision for our Confederation: highways, pipelines and projects such as the
Saint Lawrence Seaway.
Over a century since the founding of Confederation, these principles of citizenship became
the framework for the existing Agreement on
Internal Trade signed in 1994: the promotion
of collaboration, equality and free movement
amongst Canadians in the pursuit of opportunity.
And since 1994, two more commitments have advanced these principles: the Trade, Investment
and Labour Mobility Agreement (TILMA), and the
New West Partnership and accompanying Trade
Agreement (NWPTA).

Alberta was first in line to ink all three agreements for a simple reason. All regions have prospered by upholding these principles, as have all
Canadians when we work together to advance
them. But there are times when protectionist
views create obstacles to the vision of the nation, and we have risked letting opportunities
for advancing shared prosperity slip by us. The
building of pipelines and achieving fair value for
our products, or recognition of credentials which
enable a Canadian to be compensated fairly in all
jurisdictions, are both examples where we continue to stumble in upholding the aspirations of
the nations founders.
There are leaders who trust in collaboration
and reciprocity, and recognize the benefits advancing these values provide to all citizens nationwide. In times of misalignment, far-sighted
leaders remain committed to our nations founding principles and the perspective they encourage is clear: what is good for one region is good
for all Canadians.
To be effective this attitude must be authentic,
and these negotiations are a test for all our relationships. With a struggling economy and many
fellow Albertans struggling to make ends meet,
it may be tempting to retreat from our inter-provincial partnerships at the expense of our longstanding commitment to Confederation. But it is
now, when the chips are down, we must model
the leadership weve asked of others. We are
more reliant than ever on the trust and goodwill
of our Confederation partners, and they on ours,
in a competitive global economy.
Notwithstanding the economic implications,
Canadians time-and-again have clearly expressed
their commitment to the existing Agreement on
Internal Trades first principle: we do not discriminate amongst our neighbours in the sharing of
prosperity, or in times of need. Our partnerships
need to reflect the goodwill and integrity of this
shared commitment ratifying a refreshed and
evolved agreement is an opportunity to ensure
our values as citizens meaningfully shape our future as a nation.
We believe this important work can be completed by First Ministers working together, as
neighbours first.

Rosebud Chamber Music Festival

welcomes new and returning musicians
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

The fourth annual Rosebud Chamber Music Festival opens in southern Alberta later this
month. The weeklong festival opens July 25, with
an informal music reading party at the HaskayneKenney Mercantile in Rosebud.
The festival also closes in Rosebud, with a concert in Rosebud Church, July 31. Concerts will
also be held in Drumheller on July 28 and in
Three Hills on July 29. All concerts start at 7:30
pm. The Reading Party starts at 7 p.m. Additional
events, including a childrens event, may also be
announced.
Two new musicians join the festival performers
this year. Marie Berard is a violinist, the concertmaster with the Canadian Opera Company.
Shes a magnificent violinist, really one of
Canadas greats. Very in demand in Toronto and
all over Canada and the world as a soloist, said
Keith Hamm, the festivals artistic director. Shes
going to bring a really unique and really beautiful
voice to the company.
The second new musician is violist Florian Peelman.
He is a really wonderful player from Belgium,
Hamm said. He certainly is a very interesting
character and interesting musician. He comes
from Belgium, but hes a citizen of the world. Hes
really quite gifted. Hes (played) with groups like
the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra.
The other musicians performing this year have
been with the festival from the beginning: Hamm
on viola, Sheila Jaffe on violin, Arnold Choi on
cello and Peter Longworth on piano.
One thing about having a really wonderful
company of artists is that other wonderful artists

want to be a part of that company, Hamm said.

These musicians keep returning, and new musicians request invitations to come, he said, partially because the rural environment is a refreshing
change from the large cities where they perform
most of the year. But hes glad theyve discovered
that Rosebud offers even more.
I wanted to give classical musicians a taste of
what artists and audiences experience when they
come to Rosebud. Thats a very immediate sense
of community and relationships with the community members, Hamm said. They [musicians]
live in town. They share meals with locals. We do
our best to introduce the local communities to
the artists on day one. And then the entire week
long, we see each other on the street and say hi.
We have coffee together. Its this relationship that
lasts hopefully the entire week. And by the end, I
think theres a really strong sense of family.
Rosebud has gotten to know the music along
with the musicians, he said.
Rosebud audiences are very new to the art
form [of chamber music], he said. But because
of the arts culture and the theatre culture that
lives there, their minds are just so open to experiencing performance of all kinds. To see a whole
group of people that are so new to this music
yet so open to it and so receptive has been just
incredible.
To those of us who have not yet been to the
Rosebud Chamber Music Festival, Hamm says,
Just come see this music. Come and hear this
music. Forget everything you thought you know
about this stuff. Its really amazing.
Concert tickets are $25, or $10 for students.
Reading Party admission is by donation. For tickets, information and updates, see rosebudchambermusic.com.

Busy summer in Bow River Riding

MARTIN SHIELDS
Member of Parliament Bow River Riding

Now that summer is here, there are many
events that are family-oriented over the summer.
I know that many people are considering staycations where they can get away without having to
leave southern Alberta. I invite you to consider
supporting our local economy with your tourism
dollars.
There have been a number of exciting events
already, including dozens of Canada Day celebrations across Bow River. There are numerous
events that are occurring in the next few months
as well, which will make summer in Bow River
very exciting, with many activities for people of
all ages.
There will be a big bash in Lomond on July
16, as they celebrate their 100th anniversary as
a community. The Lomond Parade beginning at
10:30 a.m. will be an exciting event as part of
these celebrations.
There is the Vulcan Show and Shine on July 16.
Consider the Chestermere Water Festival, which
is the biggest event of the year in that community.
This years festival takes place on July 16.
There are Langdon Days celebrations the weekend of July 22, with the slo-pitch tournament and
beer gardens beginning at 6 p.m., and a DJ at 9
p.m. Then Saturday, July 23, there is the Langdon

parade at 10 a.m.
I hope that many will plan on attending the
Rockyford Rodeo, which occurs the weekend of
July 22-24.
There is the Strathmore Heritage Days and
Stampede the weekend of July 29. I look forward
to seeing you at the Strathmore parade on the
July 30 at 9 a.m.
From Aug. 12-14, mark down the 85th anniversary of Milo in your calendars. Milo is a small
community with a big heart.
On Aug. 21, plan to attend the Earl Taylor Day
celebrations in the EID Historical Park in Scandia. Its always a good time, with lots of fun for
families. It is a great way to teach our younger
Albertans about the history of our area.
Theres the Taber Cornfest Aug. 26-27, which is
always a major event that draws people from all
across Western Canada. Taber corn is renowned
for being the best corn around.
Also plan on attending the Gleichen Fall Fair
on Aug. 27.
Lets make summer 2016 memorable, while at
the same time supporting our local communities
and events.

A tornado, snow, heavy rains and
a grizzly bear, these are some of the
things that Erikki Valen, who is better
know by Eric Valen, has had to deal
with on his Coast-to-Coast Charity walk.
Valen left Campbell River on Vancouver Island 35 days ago and has walked
15000 km to reach Strathmore on July
8. He is doing the walk in memorial of
his mother Anja Minkkinen who died
of heart disease about seven years ago
and in doing so is hoping to raise funds
for the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
Basically what I am trying to do is
create awareness about heart disease,
he said.
It is the number one killer of all Canadians, especially women. I am travelling across Canada to raise donation
and awareness at the same time.
The 53 year old walks about 10-12
hours a day and hopes to raise about
$10000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. He believes that he is currently sitting at around $1000, which he
hopes to increase with public awareness of his cause.
Vilens daughter Amber Winnik
turned him onto the idea to walk from
Campbell River to Halifax, Nova Scotia
after he lost his job. Vilen and his son
were in the roofing industry in Calgary
before the oil bust occurred. His son
moved back to Ontario but Vilen had
refused to move because he loved the
mountains and the prairies. His daughter suggested he combine the two
things his loves, walking and writing.
He has been keeping a journal if his
adventures and admitted it has been on
full with danger but also made him feel
closer to nature.
In order to prepare for the 6,393 km
distance he would walk everyday from
in Calgary, from Cranston to the Down-

Aerial Crop
Spraying

town area and back again. However,

while he said this didnt prepare him
well enough he will not let this stop
him form completing his goal.
My faith and integrity will help me
finish what I started.
Hygiene is incredibly important to
Vilen and he likes to keep clean-shaven. While in the mountain he was able
to bathe in many of the glacier-feed rivers and lakes but is worried about how
he will keep clean in the prairies where
fresh, open water sources are harder to
come by. He has funded the walk himself and prefers not to spend too much
on it on gas station showers.
He keeps all of his supplies in doublewide baby carrier, which he calls his little red wonadaygo trailer. This includes
his tent, fishing pole, food and clothing.
He has outfitted the carrier to make it
easier to pull up hills. He will continue
on walking all throughout summer into
the fall and hopes that by the time he
reaches Halifax he will have raised the
funding goals he has set for himself as
well as raise public awareness.

The Sunset Limited: the

challenge of giving others hope
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

The Sunset Limited, a two-man play by Cormac
McCarthy, opened on Rosebuds BMO Studio Stage,
July 8. Morris Ertman is director.
Two men, named Black and White, are locked together in a run-down apartment in Chicago. Black
has just rescued White from jumping in front of
a train called The Sunset Limited. Black has now
locked White into his own apartment and is trying
to save more than his life. He wants to save this
mans soul.
Nathan Schmidt, a Rosebud resident actor, plays
White, an agitated professor who is drawn and driven by darkness. For him, the darkest perspective is
always the truest one. Inside Blacks apartment on
the day of our story, White has nowhere to go but
is desperate to get away.
Carl Kennedy, an American actor whos new to
Rosebud, plays Black. Hes lived out the worst that
life has to offer, and has afflicted plenty of misery on other people. But now he carries only hope.
Yes, hope, and a determination to pass it on. Kennedys portrayal of Black is determined but endearing, single-minded and deep. Even during Whites
longer monologues, Kennedy stays fully engaged as
a listener. His openness and compassion, made all
the more convincing by his authentic accent, drew
me in.
Black and White are so fascinating and lifelike
that I realized, days after I saw the play, that I want
to get to know both of these characters better.

For this show, the BMO Studio Stage has been

arranged with two facing sections of seating, so we
could see each others responses. The set is small
and its elements are concrete: Black takes food from
the fridge and heats it on the stove, and he makes
coffee. We smell the aroma as he and White eat and
drink together. All of that heightens my sense that
this story and these men are real, that somewhere
in this world, not far away, living people are experiencing this reality.
Id prepared myself for The Sunset Limited to be
dark, perhaps even depressing, but it is not. It is
certainly thought-provoking, but its also light and
funny, bright and tender.
The ending of the story isnt what Id hoped for,
but I found it satisfying. What is satisfying is not
the way the events evolve, but what I see in Blacks
heart his determination to keep doing what is
impossible, for the sake of continuing to give hope
and love to those who need it most.
The show presents no easy solutions to humanitys problems, but it reminds me were all on a
path toward growth. It reminds me that, no matter how bleak our path is, we can always choose
hope. And its deepest impression on me was my
renewed awareness of the courage and determination it takes to give that hope to others.
Sunset Limited runs Wednesday to Saturday on
Rosebuds BMO Studio Stage until Aug. 27. The
ticket is show-only, but Wild Horse Jacks restaurant and Thorny Rose Cafe are open. For tickets and

You gotta love routine!

Certainly each of us will
have some routine we
follow. I get up in the
morning, feed the cat, walk
the dog, and then enjoy a
coffee. This is the routine
that brings me back to life
each morning.
In our culture routine is
often underappreciated.
We tend to go in for the
dramatic just look at what
sells on the magazine rack
or what shows in the movie
theatre or what sports are
popular. Most all are very
dramatic, action packed
and adrenalin producing
forms of entertainment!
Elijah was one of the
most significant of the
prophets. He looked for
God in the wind, and in
the earthquake, and in
fire and found nothing.
He looked for God in all
that was loud but instead,

found God in silence. Elijah

did not experience Gods
presence in a dramatic way
but in a quiet voice. This
voice asked him a question,
rather than providing any
simple answers.
Then there came a voice
to him that said, What are
you doing here, Elijah? I
Kings 19:13
Perhaps if we feel God is
far away, it is because we
are looking in the wrong
place. Could it be that God
is with us in the routine
of our lives? God present
in the quiet of feeding
the cat, walking the dog,
sipping a hot coffee? This is
comforting news.
Psalm 139:2 reads you
know when I sit down and
when I rise up. In the
ordinary activities of my
day, Lord, speak, for I am
listening.

Summer fun at the library

ANDREA ROBERTS
Times Intern

School is out and the
Strathmore Municipal Library has a line up of programs and events this summer set to entertain both
the youth and adults in the
community. The library also
plans on breaking two more
records this year after the
success of last years longest
conga line through a library.
Summer is here which
means we are super busy
at the library, said Carmen
Erison, assistant director of
library service at he Strathmore Municipal Library.
This doesnt mean we
arent usually busy just busy
in a different way. The kids
are out of school so we do
see them coming to the library, using our computers
and then the summer reading program. We have also
created a few unique programs for the kids.
The long list of events includes a record-breaking attempt on July 15 at 2 p.m.
They would like to set the
new record for number of
cardigans worn in a public
library. While Erison understands summer is not cardigan weather she assures the
public that the library has an
A/C system and participants
only need to wear the cardigan for a short period of
time. They require 25 participants to break the record
The library will also attempt to set a record for largest pajama party in a library
on August 19 at 5.30 p.m.
The library will again need
25 people to set the record.
Youth of all ages along with
their parents are invited to
the event. They will be treated to snacks and a movie,
which Erison believes will
make it a great pajama party.

She credited the idea for the

records to the Summer Reading Program coordinators,
leah Elder and Carly Davidson.
Most of the events hosted
by the library are geared towards youth aged 15 and under. There are two free, dropin events that will take place
over the summer. The first is
Secret Service Day on July
29 from 2-4 p.m. this event
will allow children to follow
any fantasies they may have
on becoming a secret agent,
they will learn code-breaker
and how to use disguises.
Their agility will also be put
to the test as on of the rows
of shelves are transformed
into a laser maze while their
intuition is put to the test as
they help to solve mysteries. The second free event
will take place on August 12
and will coincide with the
Rio Summer Olympics. The
Strathmore Municipal Library Summer Olympics will
run from 1-3 p.m. where participants will go from booth
to booth and have a passport
stamped. At the end of the
day a winner will be chosen
and will receive a gift card
from Toys r Us.
One of the programs that
Erison is most looking forward to is a program run
by 11-year-old Charlie Ziehr
called Act the Week, which
will run the week of August
8-12 where children between
the ages of seven to 10 learn
how to act. At the end of the
week the children will put
on a play that was written by
Ziehr.
For Erison these programs
help to get people more involved with the community.
Any way that we can help
the community members
while bringing enjoyment
and literacy into their lives is
what we are here for.

Passion Play tells Jesus story

in everyday language
LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

The Canadian Badlands Passion Play
opened its 23rd season on July 8. The
Greatest Story Ever Told, as the Passion
Play calls itself, is both completely old
and entirely new.
The Passion Play story is, of course,
completely old. Its the story of Jesus
life as recorded in the Bible. It tells of
Jesus birth, his teachings, his miracles,
his crucifixion, his resurrection and his
return to Heaven.
But the 2016 story is also brand new.
The script is based on the Gospel of
Luke, after five years of performances
based on the Gospel of John. These
Gospels are similar, but they describe
different events from Jesus life and
give varied perspectives of his major
life events.
The Passion Play still includes about
200 volunteers, many from Rosebud
and Wheatland County, who perform
onstage and work behind the scenes,
to make the event run incredibly
smoothly. Many of them have been
volunteering for years, and Im always
impressed at the freshness of their enthusiasm and their limitless energy.
Caleb Gordon, a Rosebud School of
the Arts graduating student, is one of
those whos been involved in the Passion Play before. But this year, hes in a
brand new role, playing Jesus.
Brian Jensen, the actor who played the
narrator John in previous years, is also
back but in a new role, as lead director.
Luke Ertman, who composed the music for the previous script, has returned
with brand new music this year.
Passion Play performances are set on
the same stage in a natural amphitheatre in Drumheller. But the Luke script
uses the set differently, and spreads
the action even more widely across the
hills.
When I saw performances based on
the John script, it was always a thrill to
see white-clothed angels end the show
by circling us from the tops of the hills.
The Luke script also includes whiteclothed angels, singing and telling the
story, entering into the joy and sorrow
of the people, and watching over them.
This year, I was fascinated to see the

addition of dark angels, who emphasize that evil is also

very present in this story. Theyre prominent when evil forces are trying to destroy people, and when it seems that evil
will triumph. But evil does not triumph. And in this story,
the white-robed angels still celebrate the victory of good
over evil.
New to this script is also plenty of humour, arising from
ordinary conversations, from sibling rivalry, and from the
limitations of leaders who pretend theyre powerful.
The simplicity of the language, based on a contemporary
translation of the Bible, also surprised me. The music of this
script is harmonic and haunting, carrying the story in ways
the dialogue alone could not. Im used to thinking of the
life of Jesus with a bit of distance, because it happened so
long ago. With this music, plain language and humour, and
the ordinary, open conversations between characters, the
story seemed more immediate and much more personal. I
felt like it could happen here where I live, and that it really
was happening right before my eyes.
The crucifixion scene seemed especially real, and with Gordons excellent acting, I sensed Jesus torment more deeply
too.
The Passion Play is performed outside in all kinds of weather, which also enhances the sense that this story is current
and alive. During our three-hour performance, the weather
moved from sunny and hot to cool and cloudy, then to rainy,
windy and dusty. I was glad wed dressed and prepared for
a full range of weather. I was comfortable enough in my
wooden seat, but I noticed that many others had brought
seat padding; Id likely do that next time.
The Passion Play gives six more performances at 4 p.m. or
6 p.m. on July 15, 16 and 17, and 22, 23 and 24. See canadianpassionplay.com for more information and tickets.

Well-deserved animal care award

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Area residents know the Animal Care
Centre of Strathmore is a good place to
take their animals for health care. The
centres website indicates 98 per cent of
their clients would refer others to the
centre.
That community confidence has
reached a national level. The centre was
awarded the 2016 practise of the year
from the Canadian Veterinary Medical
Association (CVMA).
The CVMA is pleased to honour the
Animal Care Centre of Strathmore the
Practise of the Year Award for not only
their compassion and dedication to the
animals in their care, but for their commitment to the betterment of their community and its members, says Dr. Nicole Gallant, 2015-16 CVMA President.
The Scotiabank-sponsored award of

$1,000 and a plaque was set up in 2013

to recognize veterinary practice teams
with outstanding achievement within
their local community. The definition
of outstanding for this award includes
innovation, provision of veterinary services, commitment to work-life balance,
meaningful community or charitable
involvement, or implementation of
green practice procedure.
The nominees are chosen by the
CVMA executive and council members,
who review each entry and assess the
candidates skills and history that apply
to the award.
Letters of nomination include 1,000
words on the nominees professional
accomplishments, letters of support,
news articles in the last two years and
any articles written by the nominee.
The award was given to Dr. Jodi Viste,
at the 2016 CVMA conference held in
Ontario last week. Vista said she was

speechless and honoured when she

heard they were chosen.
Viste founded the centre in 2007,
which currently has six veterinarians
and 31 staff members to look after
large and small animal needs. The facility has indoor treatment areas for
larger animals and extensive technical
equipment, and veterinarians provide
specialized surgical services not offered elsewhere.
After all the effort, time and commitment we put into our work, it is nice to
get this recognition, said Viste. It is a
team effort and we are so thankful for
the support of this community. They
have been good to us.
That gratitude is given back by the
centre to the community. One per cent
of the gross earnings are given annually to a local community group or sports
team. Their nail trim program awards
$10 toward a different animal rescue
charity each month. The last three
months have been dedicated to efforts
of rescue groups to care for animals
caught in the Fort McMurray fire. A local school groups fundraising efforts
added to those raised from the nail
trim program have helped the centre
surpass their $2,500 fundraising goal.
The centre also supports the Animal
Rescue Foundation spay and neuter
program. Aboriginal communities request help to reduce wild dog populations and veterinarians donate their
time to perform the needed surgeries
to keep the populations under control.
The Town of Strathmore and Wheatland County coordinate
efforts with

the centre to place stray animals. The

centre helps identify animals, getting
them back to owners and assists until strays can be transferred to Calgary
Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to
Animals (SPCA) and new owners located.
Staff from the centre volunteers to
monitor stock at the local rodeos. Recent events attended were the Rockyford Bull-A-Rama, Cody Snyders Bullbustin at the Ranchmans in Calgary
and the Big Hitch event.
Public education sessions are given
to groups like 4-H, and the centre allows aspiring veterinarians to volunteer
for career training.
Pet-to-owner parasites are currently
in the centres scope, the main one
being ticks. There is a vaccination for
dogs against tick illnesses and Viste encourages owners to get tested for Lyme
disease, as it is becoming more prevalent in Alberta. Pet obesity is another
issue the centre is addressing. They will
be holding weight loss clinics for pets
in the near future. The centre has nutritious food for purchase, and the food
loyalty program helps keeps animals
healthy by awarding a $50 gift certificate towards their pets next visit to the
centre, after the purchase of 10 bags of
animal food.
Check out the Animal Care Centre of
Strathmore website at animalcarecentre.ca to see the many services and information provided. The site highlights
animal news and issues, client reviews
and interesting success stories on the
animal patients they
have treated.

she said. I have definitely learned a
lot and have grown as a person. I have
gained a lot of self-confidence from
meeting and talking to people.
During her reign as queen, Gerencer
found herself talking with many different people and that has helped her to
grow as a person. She also believes the
communication skills she has gained will
follow her into the future and will continue to help her.
As the Strathmore Stampede Queen,
Gerencer has had to be a public figure,
promoting the Strathmore Stampede to
other rodeos, signing autographs and being a role model for many of her young
fans.
She is also a mentor to this years

parts of the competition.

Gerencer said she has made friends
with the three contestants as they have
all attended events together, and she believes they are all going to go far in life.
Once you are in the queen role, you
always want to have that ambassador
side of you out there and be able to wear
your invisible crown because people will
always look up to you, she said.
While there are people who look up to
her, Gerencer said there are a few people, including her mom and the queens
committee, who have looked out for her
and helped her along during the past
year.
Gerencer was the only local contestant
during last years rodeo queen contest
and managed to woo the judges with
her personality and horsemanship skills.
Gerencer was the first Strathmore Stampede Queen to be crowned since 2000.
Once she has passed on her crown,
Gerencer plans on focusing on school.
She hopes to become a radiologist, as
that is a subject she is interested in.
However, this doesnt mean she will
leave rodeo behind, as she will continue
on with her barrel racing.

MEMBER OF THE MONTH
Grayson Wright
My name is Grayson and I am 18
years old. I have been a member at
Anytime Fitness since it has opened
in Strathmore. The start of my fitness
journey was very inconsistent until I
started to realize the positive impact
it had on my life. Growing up I was
very actively involved in different
sports, my main passion being
lacrosse. Since training at the gym
it has helped not only develop more
confidence and endurance, but my
overall outcome in all sports. This has
helped me to accomplish my goal to
play for the Calgary Mountaineers
junior-B lacrosse team. The positive
atmosphere of Anytime Fitness allows
me to feel comfortable while training
during the week. I am appreciative of
my experience as it has helped build
my confidence as an individual inside
and outside of the gym.

Between 2010 and 2014,
there were 3,323 motorcycles involved in collisions,
with 153 resulting in death.
The month of July is motorcycle awareness month in
Alberta, with the aim to educate motorcycle riders about
how to stay safe when out on
the road.
The Government of Alberta advises that motorcycles
drivers should have proper
training in order to have a
safe trip. While not a necessity to obtain your Class 6
license, motorcycle training
is believed to be more than
helpful when it comes to
learning about how to oper-

ate the bike and stay safe.

Many insurance companies
have begun to offer insurance credits and reductions
for motorcycles if the owner
has undergone training.
We teach basically the
safety aspects of things in
terms of situational awareness, said Dennis Bigras,
owner and instructor of Mobile Motorcycle Training.
This includes controlling
your environment, so I teach
them methods to recognize
problems and what to do to
avoid problems.
Bigras has been riding
motorcycles for about 35
years and became an instructor in 2009. The one thing
he stresses at his school is
safety. An important safety

aspect when riding a motorcycle is to

remember to read the road ahead and
to prepare for the curves, as Bigras
said 80 per cent of accidents occur on
curves.
He also explained the need for helmets, something the Government of Alberta stresses the need for as well.
There are three different kinds of helmets available for motorcyclists. There
is the full face, which offers full face
and head protection and is best recommended for use on bikes with no windshield, where the rider is more likely to
be hit by flying stones or bugs.
There is also the 3/4 motorcycle
helmet that covers the head and ears;
some can come with a sun visor. This
is better recommended for bikes with a
visor or when the rider is in less danger
of been hit with a flying rock.
Lastly there is the half shell helmet,
which only covers the top of the head
and offers the least amount of protection.
As with any motorized vehicle, the
Government of Alberta also advises riders not to get on the bike while under
the influence of drugs or alcohol. Maneuvering a bike requires sharp focus
and good reflexes, both of which would
be dulled if the rider was intoxicated.
And, motorcycle riders can be charged
and arrested with driving under the influence.
While motorcyclists need to be responsible for their own safety, Brian
Mason, provincial Minister of Transportation, stated in a press release all road
users need to be aware of who is using
the road and to be careful when driving
next to a motorcycle.

The Strathmore Girls Fastpitch Softball teams continue
to do well this season.
Recently the U10-06 won
silver during their provincials, while the U19 team won
bronze in their provincials.
The U10-06 took part in the
provincials on July 1-3 at the
Henry Singer Diamonds in Edmonton.
I was so impressed with the
girls and how well they played
as a team, said Wes Clark, the
U10-06 coach. We had timely
hits, great pitching, executed
double plays, laid down picture perfect bunts and ran the
bases well.

The team was formed in June

and they had four practices
and five exhibition games before they played in the provincials. Clark said the team had a
lot thrown at them in the short
time period but they handled it
well, of which he is proud.
The U10-06 finished the
round robin section of the provincials in third. During the
playoff round they took on
the Sedgwick Oilers and won.
This allowed them to move on
to the medal game, which they
played on July 3. They defeated the Lloydminster Liners and
went on to play the Edmonton
Warriors.
While they were defeated 1714, Clark said it was a very tight
game that could have gone ei-

With the bull riding season in full swing, there are a
number of talented locals who are willing to show off
their skill in the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) arena.
Wyatt Laughlin and Wace Pallesen are two local bull
riders who are trying to show they can stay on a bucking
bull with an average weight of 1,600 pounds for the
required eight seconds.
There is the probability of dying every time you go out
there, said Laughlin. It is a hard thing that a person has
to learn to give over and conquer the beast. With the bull
riders who are riding at this [PBR] level, that is something
that they know you just put all your fear in a jar, close it
up and forget all about it.
Laughlin has been riding bulls for about five years and
this is his first year in the pro circuit. His season had
started off well, placing second in Moose Jaw during the
PBR Canadian Tour on Feb. 1. However, he injured his
riding hand and he ended up taking a month off to heal.
Recently he was called to be an alternative rider in the
Ranchmans 17th Annual Invitational PBR Bull Bustin
event July 5-6, in Calgary.
Pallesen started riding steers when he was about 10
years of age and moved onto junior bulls when he was 15,
making it all the way to the Chinook Rodeo Associations
finals for junior bull riding, where he was the youngest
competitor by at least two years. However, this season
isnt going so well for him.
I havent been doing so hot, he said. I have been
getting some rank bulls that are pretty good and I just
havent been doing very hot lately to be honest.
Pallesen injured his shoulder in May during the Bull
Riders Canada event in Alix, Alta. Yet, although he said
there havent been too many highlights to his season, one
event that stands out is the Rockyford Bull-A-Rama, held
on June 30, when he rode China White, a PBR bull that
has been ridden by some of the best in the business, such
as Scott Schiffner.
In order to keep in top shape, both Pallesen and Laughlin maintain a healthy lifestyle, making sure they eat well
and exercise. Bull riders need to be quick and have fast
reflexes. They also have to keep up this routine while they
are on the road.

Obituaries
BOYD,

Patricia Lynn
(nee Stubbs)
July 7, 1954-July 8, 2016
It is with our deepest sorrow that
we inform you of the passing of our
beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother,
Daughter and Sister, Patricia (Patti)
Lynn Boyd (nee Stubbs) on July 8,
2016, just a day after her 62nd birthday. Patti will be deeply missed by her
husband of 42 years, Owen Boyd, sons Kevin Boyd
(Angie) and Kelly Boyd, brothers William (Bill) Stubbs
(Heather) and Barry Stubbs (Karla), mother Caroline
Stubbs (nee Tyess), grandchildren Tessa and Tyson
Boyd, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her father Robert William
(Bill) Stubbs in 1998. Patti was born in Hanna Alberta
where she graduated high school in 1972 and married the love of her life, Owen Boyd in 1973. In 1991
they moved their little family of four to Strathmore
where they remained to raise their children, retire
and watch their grandchildren grow. For many years
Patti tended to her mother Carolines joy, care and
wellbeing and continued to look after her mom until
she was no longer able to manage due to her failing health. She was a caregiver at heart, and found
her life niche and true calling working with, as well
as advocating for the elderly as a Licensed Practice
Nurse (LPN) in senior care facilities. Patti had been
suffering from Myelodysplasia, a form of bone marrow failure for a little more than two years; sadly,
she succumbed to complications of the disease before being able to receive a stem cell transplant. She
passed away peacefully surrounded by her family.
We would like to thank all the health care staff, including all the Doctors, the lab techs, all the nursing
staff, and all support staff over the past few years
who helped Patti through this long process. There
are too many names to mention, you all mean so
much to us for all that you have done and the care
that you have provided. We would like to express our
sincere gratitude to all the friends and family who
have been there for support and comfort through this
time, you will never know how much your strength
has supported us. An open house Celebration of Life
will be held on Monday July 18, 2016 at the Royal
Canadian Legion Branch 10 in Strathmore, AB from
1:30 till 4:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may
be made directly to the Aplastic Anemia and Myelodysplasia Association of Canada (Aplastic Anemia
and Myelodysplasia Association of Canada, 11181
Yonge Street, Suite 321, Richmond Hill, ON, L4S 1L2
or by following the link https://www.canadahelps.
org/dn/3492) or any donations received by the family will be donated in Pattis name for research in
to this little known life threatening disease. To send
condolences, please visit Pattis obituary at www.
wheatlandfuneralhome.ca.
