1.0 INTRODUCTION
Lawin Properties Sdn. Bhd is a developer for proposed development for
commercial used of land lot no: 5849 in Mukim Kampung Buaya in District of Kuala
Kangsar. The proposed scheme for the development have been submitted to
Majlis Daerah Kuaka Kangsar for development approval. The submitted
development layout plan as shown in Appendix A.
From the layout proposed by the developer, it was found that slope with estimated
length of 125 m is located in lot no. 5849 along the boundaries to lot no. 2577 and
2578. Due to the requirement by local authority to study the slope stability, Jurutera
Perunding Warisan has been appointed to carried out the analysis and provide the
proposal regarding the matter. Appendix B shows the site location of the studied
slope.
This report in technical association prepared by Jurutera Perunding Warisan for
Lawin Properties Sdn. Bhd. presents the detailed proposed design based of the
cut slope on site constraints, practicability, and cost effectiveness for JKR or any
related local authority approval. The proposal of cut slope lope is supported by all
the necessary details and analysis as per Geotechnical Manual for Slopes (1994).

2.0 FIELD RECONNAISSENCE

The soil investigation was carried out to determine of subsurface condition and the
data is significant to carried out the terrain stability assessment. Two (2) numbers
of boreholes was carried out along the slope and based on information from the
soil investigation, soil parameters are tabulated as follows:Table 1: Geotechnical Parameters
Soil Type
Sandy Silt

Cu (kN/m3)

45o

From the soil investigation also was found that the water level is 2.5m below the
ground level and not significant to analysis of the slope stability.
Please refer to Appendix C for Soil Investigation Field Record.
Further to that, site survey also was carried out to determine the spot level of the
ground and it was also found that existing earth drain was constructed at toe of

slope. The level from the site survey also is significant to carried out the slope
analysis. Appendix D shows the plan view of topographic spot level and crosssection taken by licenced surveyor at the studied area.
During the site visit, the approximately 15-17m high and and gentle (i.e. <45
degrees) cut slope experienced no significant of distresses earth and minor
tension cracks with vertical scars of 0.1-0.2m deep and non-excessive lateral
movements appeared within the body and along the crest of the studied slope.
Appendix E generally present the current conditions of the studied slope.
3.0 Slope Study Analysis
The original slope was observed to be 1:1 gradient with 45 degree single slope.
Stability analysis were carried out to determine the minimum factor of safety
against instability based on Mass Procedure of Stability Analysis Method and
checked with Bishop Method of Slices Slope Stability. Both method are used for
comparison of factor of safety. During construction the required minimum factor of
safety (FOS) in short term for edge slope stability is to be taken as 1.25.
Basically, the assumption of design criteria made for the analysis including the
following: All un-reinforced and reinforced slopes shall have Factor of Safety (FoS)
greater than 1.25 and 1.50, respectively for local and global stability based on
lower bound shear strength parameters.
Methods used for stability analysis shall be based on reliable methods as
recommended by the GEO Geotechnical Manual for Slopes (1994).
Drainage design for berm, cut-off and cascade drains should have a return
period of 25 years or min 50mm/hr. All slopes shall be protected by close
turfing or hydroseeding with biodegradable mat.

Mass Procedure of Stability Analysis

Based on SI, soil parameters are simplified as follow: = 45o

= 20o
Cu = 24 kN/m3
= 18.9 kN.m3
m = Cu
Hcr
From table Taylor's stability number , for = 45o and = 20o ,
Value of m = 0.06.
Therefore, Hcr =

24 kN/m3
(18.9 kN.m3) x (0.06)

21.1 m

Assume that full fiction is mobilized, therefore d = = 20o and maximum

height = 8.5m
Then Cu'd = Hcr m = (0.06) x (18.9) x (8.5) = 9.64 kN/m3
Therefore, FOS' =
=

tan '
tan d
1

Meanwhile FOSc' =

Cu
Cu'd
= 24 kN/m3
9.64 kN/m3
= 2.50

Since FOS' FOSc' , therefore is not the factor of safety with respect to strength.
Trial calculation of FOS' and FOSc' , for various assumed values of d are used
and following table is tabulated : d

The values of FOSc' then plotted against corresponding values of FOS to

determined the actual FOS where FOS = FOSc' = FOS.
From the graph plotted, we found that FOS = 1.51
Bishop Method of Slices Slope Stability analysis found that the FOS = 1.55
which is presented in Appendix F.
From the results of respective method of slope stability analysis, it found that the
maximum slope high with factor of safety above 1.5 is 8.5 m.

4.0 CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

A normal cut slope with maximum of 6m high cut along boundaries of Lot No. 2577
and 2578 with drainage provided and turfing with biomat is recommended to
developer to be carried out for the studied area. Since the different high to the toe
of slope was identified as 15-17m, therefore two (2) berm is recommended and
proper drainage i.e concrete lined interceptor drain, berm drain and toe drain shall
be provided at slope area. Any tension cracks or substantial lateral displacements
along crest of slope shall be voided during construction, because if any significant
to the cracks, it could impose deterioration to slope stability.
This report has presented the preliminary assessment of the proposed cut slope
works, which has technically satisfied JKR minimum requirements and shall
provide a long term and reliable performance to the overall stability of the slope.
