Brewing a Better Future

Current situation

Ambition

Number of contractor fatalities has increased in the last

10 years and too many contractor accidents still occur.
In 2011: 4 fatalities among contractor personnel on 200
units in 60 countries.
Contractors have the ability to impact our own safety.

Conclusion

Accident free workplace for employees and contractors in

the production units by 2020.

Contractor safety

Accidents & fatalities among production employees and

contractors.

This is a serious issue and we need to reverse the trend.

Focus on contractor safety!

You are responsible for the safety of our contractors!

About contractors

Why contractors?

Which sort of contractor work?

1.
2.

Routine non-hazardous work

Non-routine hazardous work (e.g. working on buildings & installations)

Facts indicate need to focus on 2nd group

What sort of non-routine hazardous work? (e.g.)

Working on heights (scaffold, roof, ladder) and in confined space (tanks, sewer
systems)
Working in areas with noxious gases (ammonia, CO2, sewer gas) and carrying out
electrical work (low & high voltage)

What is special about contractors?

To perform work that requires special skills we do not have / do not have people
for

They are people from outside to do work for us on site.

They work in a non-familiar environment.
They often dont feel part of Heineken.
They need your attention!

Safety Cards

What?

Feedback and Evaluation

14

Use of the Safety Cards is a dynamic process, so we value all

feedback.
Please feel free to give additional feedback in addition to
observation form.
We registrate the use of card and safe and unsafe behavior of
contractors.
Questions to be answered during pilot:
Is this explanation clear?
Are texts / cartoons on the safety cards clear?
Do the safety cards represent non-routine work (are there
missing tasks)?
Are the safety cards easy to use on the work floor?
What do you think of the safety cards?

Feedback and Evaluation

15

Contractor Recognition

16

Why recognition?
Stimulate changes in culture and behaviour.
Reward progress made and results achieved.
Improve our safety behaviour culture.

Contractor Recognition

17

SHE manager has freedom to judge which contractor deserves

recognition:
Based on compliance in the use of the safety cards and less or
no accidents.
Based on factors like complexity, duration and magnitude of
the work.

SHE manager builds up a file per contractor with results of

inspections.

Certificate will be made available to hand over to the contractor.
