TEXT I - The press

The press is sometimes called
the fourth estate. That is probably
too grandiose a concept for most
journalists tastes but it does
suggest an important, coherent and
independent force in society. That
apartness is crucial. The press
does not share the same aims as
those
of
government,
the
legislature, the executive, religion or
commerce. It is, or should be, an
outsider.

TEXT II - Media
Newspapers, radio, television,
and the internet including e-mail
and blogs are usually less
influential
than
the
social
environment, but they are still
significant, especially in reassuring
attitudes and opinions that are
already established. The news
media focus the publics attention on
certain personalities and issues,
leading many people to form
opinions about them. Government
officials accordingly have noted that

TEXT IV- If You Cant Master

English, Try Globish
PARIS It happens all the time:
during an airport delay the man to
the left, a Korean perhaps, starts
talking to the man opposite, who
might be Colombian, and soon they
are chatting away in what seems to
be English. But the native English
speaker
sitting
between
them
cannot understand a word.
They dont know it, but the
Korean and the Colombian are
speaking Globish, the latest addition
to the 6,800 languages that are said
to be spoken across the world. Not
that its inventor, Jean-Paul Nerrire,
considers it a proper language.
It is not a language, it is a tool,
he says. A language is the vehicle
of a culture. Globish doesnt want to
be that at all. It is a means of
communication.
