MILAN NEDI AND HIS ROLE IN WWII

IN THE LIGHT OF SERBIAN HISTORIOGRAPHY
AND NEW HISTORICAL SOURCES
Summary: Milan Nedi and his government were, and in many ways still are, generators
of great historical controversies. During the past 20 years important breakthroughs have
been made in research of this collaborationist government, although many questions
are still left unanswered. Based on newly published research and recently discovered
historical sources it can be concluded that Milan Nedi decided to take a role in new
government in a very complex and difficult moment for Serbian people. Allying
himself with the occupiers during the Uprising in Serbia (summer-autumn 1941) he
sealed his faith with almost all anti-fascist forces in the country, the Royal Government
in exile and the King Peter II. When Uprising was crushed in blood a process of
national transformation begun and Nedi became a Father of the Nation. Moreover,
he enjoyed this role and was not eager to let it go. Nedis regime was a totalitarian one
by its nature and the presence of Nazi occupier contributed in creation of totalitarian
atmosphere. Relative peace in Serbia and salvation of Serbian lives was bought by
helping the German war industry. Nedi succeeded in receiving and taking care for
vast number of Serbian refuges that came from Independent State of Croatia, fleeing
before the genocide that took place there. In occupied Serbia Nazi forces organized
large-scale Holocaust of Serbian Jews. Although Serbian collaborationist government
took place in anti-Semitic propaganda all relevant studies showed that it had nothing
to do with physical destruction of Jewish community, that was organized by Gestapo
206

and other parts of occupation government. Alongside Poland, Serbia was the only
occupied country in WWII that didnt mobilize and send its troops to fight for Third
Reich on world frontiers. Despite that, Nedi was deeply convinced in war triumph
of Nazi Germany and had remained loyal to Germans even after they dissolved his
government. His unexpected death during the post-war interrogation transferred Nedi
to history. However, his historical role still has not been fully determined.
