1. Cautions

Install protective frame upstream of metal detector to protect for over-sized material.

No Devices with electromagnetism radiation like interphone within 3 meters away. No


welding machine within 50 meters.

No vibrating machine or large moving metal within 10 meters.

10 meters or farther from magnetic detector.

The vibration of sensor base should be no higher than 0.5mm. If the conveyor vibrates
heavily, a separate base on ground or underground is required.

Distance between two metal detectors should be over 2 meters.

2. Working Principle
The new generation of LJT-B metal detectors are suitable for the fields such as mine,
metallurgy, cement, power station, coal, wood, chemical industry, coke, and ferrous and nonferrous mine with wicked working conditions. LJT-B metal detectors can detect some metal
contamination mixed in materials of iron ore, coal, wood, copper ore, aluminum ore and other
ores to protect the belt and equipment in following up procedure. Magnetic separator can just
remove ferrous metal, but not non-ferrous metal like manganese steel. While LJT-B metal
detector can detect metal contamination in the common materials as well as iron ore with
grade no higher than 60%, even nonferrous metal like manganese steel. Metal detectors are
playing very important roles in protecting crushing equipment, ensuring safe running of the
conveyor belt, improving working efficiency, reducing labor intensity and raising automation
level.

Working principle: When metal passes the sensor, it forms inductance variation and eddy
current, which forms electric impulse signal. Through processing of circuits, the signal is
outputted as passive endpoint of the relay with one open and closed respectively.

Sensitivity: When used for non-ferrous ore, it can detects 28mm iron ball When the
metal detector is applied for iron ore and material with particle size smaller than 300mm,
material grade no higher than 60%, iron tramp sized 120606mm can be detected.

5. Appearance and structure

The detector is composed of a control cabinet and a sensor. The outline of control cabinet

and panel structure is as follow:

The function of the sensor is to form inductive magnetic field and realize the exchange of
physical quantity. It is composed of insulation pipe and copper wires, and can be installed
without cutting the conveyor belt. The structure of sensor is as follow:

Through the amplifier and the recognition circuits in the control cabinet, the signal received by
the sensor about the material and harmful metal is amplified and separated and then sent to

the executor, finally output relay contact signal. The outline dimensions of sensor and belt
width are as form 1:

6. Installation and operation methods


a)

Installation of the sensor

Installation condition: No transducer, electromagnetic valve, or welding machine is

allowed to work within 50 meters; No vibrating metal within 1 meter; the distance
between sensor and pulley should be over 0.5m. Eccentricity of upper and below idler
shall be smaller than 1mm.

Remove the screw at the aviation plug side, raise the bent joint slightly, and pick the two semi
pipes out from the straight pipe underside the bent joint. Open the two semi pipes, and
unscrew the aviation plug and other plugs counterclockwise.

Install the sensor over belt conveyor away from return idler.

Screw up aviation plug and other plugs, cover the plug with the two semi pipes, and plug the
two semi pipes into the three joint, fasten the semi pipes and the straight pipe upside and the
three joint undersides with bolts.

Adjust the sensor tails position on the conveyor bracket, and fasten the sensor tails on the
conveyor bracket with M10 bolts. The swing of sensor base should not be over 0.5mm. If the
conveyor vibrates heavily, then build a separate base for it on or under floor.

Installation of control cabinet

The control box should be put in dry place with little dust and without violent shake. The
distance between control cabinet and sensor should be as near as possible. The cable length

between control cabinet and sensor is 5m. The meter box is suspended type. The distance
between fixing holes is 180mm as figure 2 shows. The box is fixed on the wall or the steel
bracket with bolts M8.

Connect control cabinet and sensor with signal cable. Screw the output controlling plug and
connect it to the separator or the electric bell or the conveyor. The power voltage is 110V.

c)

Operation and adjustment

Open the control cabinet, switch on the power and indicator light on the panel is on. 30
seconds later, the detector is ready to work.

LED level indicator light indicates: there are a line of indicator lights in the middle of the panel,
which indicate the level signals when metal passes the sensor in normal working status. The
green indicator lights indicate noise signal system or little metal passes, the red ones lights.

When inspecting the status, LED level indicator light indicates the electromagnetic intensity of
the sensor.

Indicator lights on the left of the panel indicated the power status. It is on when power on.

Indicator lights on the right of the panel are a signal indicator light. When signal indicator light
is on, the relay is working.

Adjustment of sensitivity: the clients can adjust the sensitivity according to practical working
conditions. There is a indicating potentiometer (2w1) on the upside of the panel. Revolving of
the potentiometer clockwise means the raise of the sensitivity and the counterclockwise
revolving means the reduction of the sensitivity.

The control box is connected with sensor through four-core Separable plug.

When tramp metal is detected, meter box sends out relay passive contact signal, a couple of
normal open and normal closed. And it is outputted through 20 aviation plug. The two

naked conductors are cable for normal open signal, which can be applied for equipment
interlock or individual alarm.

d)

inspection of switch box of metal detector

(1) check whether connection between aviation plug and plug in units.
(2)pointer of potentiometer inside switch box shall be within 4-7. or esle,
adjust blue potentiometer to get pointer between 4-7 given the required
sensitity is fulfilled.
3check connection between switch and probe as following:
a. ajust the red dial switch to the opposite position
b. ajust knob of blue potentiometer. if indicator on operation board turns
brighter as adjustment of knob, then the connection between probe and switch
box is in good conditions.
c. get dial switch and blue potentiometer to its initial position after
inspection.

7. Instruction and installation of Position setting devices (PSD)


Sand bag position setting principle

When metal detector is connected to 220VAC, position setting relay KA is ready; 2s after
iron signal is received, the relay sends it to PSD, then KA closes and drops the sand bag to
the right position where the iron is; alarm starts and belt stops; then the iron can be removed.

8. Recommended Solution
Option A Metal detector installed over the conveyor, and metal is removed manually.

The "output control" can be connected to the audible and visual alarm or chain belt conveyor.
The metal is removed manually. (Normally as the customer required, a set of position setting
device can be used together, see drawing 1)

Working methodWhen metal is detected, the conveyor runs as normal till the metal come to
the position setting device (PSD). Then the PSD mark the metal and the conveyor slows
down. Operators can remove the metal and start the conveyor.

Option BMetal detector installed over the conveyor, and metal is removed automatically.

1. Crossbelt magnetic separator for non-ferrous material

The metal detector should be installed over 10m from magnetic separator. Set the reaction
time according to the conveyor speed. Suitable for nonferrous material.See drawing 2

Working method

When metals are detected, the output terminal controls the separator, excitation starts and the
metals are removed when metals pass by. When no metal are detected, magnetic separator
stops.

2. Recovery magnetic separator for ferrous material

The magnetic separator is installed at the downstream of metal detector. Suitable for ferrous
material.see drawing 3

Working method

When metals are detected, the output terminal controls the separator, starts it and the metals
and ferrous materials are attracted, and then only the metal will be removed, the other ferrous
material will be back to conveyor. When no metal are detected, magnetic separator stops.

Option CMetal detectors installed on both sides of magnetic separator

A set of magnetic separator will be installed at the downstream of metal detector, and another
metal detector installed at the downstream of separator (this metal detector can be used to
control bell, combined belt or PSD) (see drawing 4) This method can remove metal and avoid
the ignorance of non-ferrous metal passing by magnetic separator.

Working method:

When metal passes the first metal detector, the separator will remove the ferrous metal. Other
metal with weak magnetism will be detected by the second metal detector; then it marks the
metal, slows down the conveyor; after that, the metal can be picked up manually.

The above methods are some typical ones. New system can be constructed according to
working characteristic of metal detector in accordance with clients requirements.
