ECAT is the threshold for entering into the professional career in

the life of a pre engineering student. Just like every competitive exam, each
and every intermediate student needs proper guidance, honest counseling and
valid information to get pass this threshold. Being the veteran of this creative
yet essential suffering, and being well aware of the difficulties that an F.Sc
student has to face during this period of time, we The Team UET Tribune
(UETs 1st ever Magazine Style News Network) has decided to be the light of
hope and a helping hand for those students who may ruin their future just
because of unawareness and poor counseling.
The ECAT Magazine, a vision more than a product, bearing the
sole purpose of providing guidance and motivation to those young and
enthusiastic Mind's of the nation who aspire to become an Engineer. In this
magazine we have tried to answer your each and every query. Not only that, we
have added previous merit lists, past papers of ECAT and rest of admission
information like seat allocation for specific categories.
The article "Words of Motivation" is a real boon for those who
want to know the view point of those students who are already studying in the
Institute. Their guidance will definitely help you to achieve far better scores.

At the end we are thankful to different mainstream student

societies of UET including Media Society, ASHRAE, BDS, AED Student
Chapter, Cyanide Hub, ICE, IEEE, IET, PSWO Student Chapter, SPACE
and ZIMAL for encouraging us by giving us their time and providing the
readers with such beautiful, heart warming and influential pieces of advice.
We all are humans and mistakes do happen. We will be very pleased
if you find out any mistake in this magazine.
Session 16' We are Looking Forward To Welcome You at UET.
Best of Luck

It is an acronym for
Engineering College Admission Test

This test is compulsory to take to get

admission in Public Sector Engineering
Universities.

The test is of Intermediate level and is

offered in the following combinations:
(a) Physics, Mathematics, English &
Chemistry
(b) Physics, Mathematics, English &
Computer Science
(c) Physics, Mathematics, English &
Statistics

F.Sc/A-Level applicants can choose any

combination
while
DAE/
B.Tech.
applicants can only choose Chemistry as the
optional subject.

ECAT is applicable
in the following
institutes:
UET Lahore & its
Sub-Campuses
UET Taxila
BZU Multan
NFC ,UOG
PU,GCU,UOS
Islamia
University
Bahawalpur
(UCET)
Some other
Govt. institutes
and many private
institutes are also
present who
accept ECAT.

There is a common misconception

in the students that ECAT comes
from outside the text books. ECAT
comes all in all from the text books
of Punjab Text Book Board while the
portion of ENGLISH is unseen but it is
usually a simple comprehension passage and you can score 10/10
easily in this portion if your English is moderate. For Mathematics,
see Logarithms because 2 MCQs come from that topic.
DAE students will also follow the same text books as F.Sc students
do because the ECAT is same for all students. A-Level students may
also follow the same text books.

In Total Merit, 70% of Intermediate/Equivalent Exam and 30% of

ECAT marks are taken into account.
MERIT CRITERIA = (0.7 x % of Fsc ) + (0.3 x % of ECAT)
If the student is Hafiz-E-Quran then he/she will be awarded with
(0-20 Marks) which will be added in the total marks of
Intermediate for merit calculation. A separate test will be held
for this purpose
For a sportsperson (0-5) marks are awarded on the basis of test
which are added in Inter marks for merit calculation
A-Level students must get certificate of equivalence for merit
calculation

The test consists of 100

MCQs
English:
10
Mathematics: 30
Physics:
30
Optional subject: 30
Chemistry - CS Statistics
Total Marks are 400 means
each question carry 4 marks
(100x4=400)
For correct answer, you get
+4, for wrong answer, there is
a negative marking of -1

If a student gets
950 in F.Sc & 280 in ECAT
% of F.Sc = 86.36
% of ECAT =
70
Merit Calculation
= (0.7x86.36) + (0.3x70)
= 81.45 %
His/Her aggregate is

81.45%

TEXT BOOK IS THE BEST BOOK

Read the text books line-by-line
Make your concepts crystal clear
Practice maximum MCQs from different books
Keep it in mind that It is the effort of the student which
leads him/her to success not the academies.

Well, there is no specific pattern for all students that you can
follow about attempting ECAT. Each student has different approach.
We are just giving you a general idea about attempting the test.
Attempt English first as it is
the easiest section. You will get
confidence which is the key to
success

If you do not understand any

question then do not waste
your time on that. Move on to
the next question

After English, choose that

section which is EASY. You can
get an idea by looking the
paper that which section is
difficult and which is easy. Every
year, one section comes
difficult in the paper. If you try
to attempt that section first
then it will be very difficult for
you to manage time for
remaining sections

After you have finished all the

questions , then try to solve the
remaining questions which you
dont understand

Attempt all the questions in a

series.

Do not fill the bubbles blindly

Fill the bubble sheet carefully
according
to
the
given
instructions
Keep in mind that negative
marking do effects your score.

Young minds with innovative ideas and courage to pursue them

derive inspiration from the accomplishments of their predecessors, these
accomplishments are in fact a fruit of their efforts but there is another
critical factor underlain here. World, as we see it today, is shaped by the
ideas that are the creation of human brain. But, all the innovations needed
platform where they were recognized and worked upon, all the brightest
ideas needed labs to execute them and all the greatest achievers needed
mentors to channel their energies and focus. The sum up of these
ingredients is the critical factor underlain; Academic institutions.
Humanity has pushed itself from Stone Age to the modern world
of today by careful shaping of human minds; training the minds, to think
logically and rationally, to argue with evidence and patience and to
experiment with hope and courage. This shaping, without any doubts, was
done in these institutions; from the meetings of disciples with Aristotle in
Greek to the modern world academic institutions.

In the list of these glorious institutions that has served this

sacred purpose so well, UET is proud to represent Pakistan globally and has
been serving the purpose of its creation ever since.
Located on the historic grand trunk road, near the magnificent
Shalimar gardens, in the beautiful city of Lahore, UET was founded in 1921
as Mughalpura Technical College. In 1923, the foundation stone of its
science block was laid by the then governor of Punjab, Sir Edward Maclogen
and the institute was renamed as Maclogen Engineering College. The
science block now known as Main block still depicts its architectural and
structural majesty despite the wear and tear of nine decades.

At the time of independence, the institution was offering well

established B.Sc. degree courses in Civil, Electrical and Mechanical
engineering. In 1962, the institution was transformed into West Pakistan
University of Engineering and Technology later renamed University of
Engineering and Technology in 1972. University started to offer
postgraduate courses in 1970 and also established an engineering college at
Taxila in 1977 .

UET has a legacy of catering to the educational and technical

needs of the country ever since its creation in 1947, when Pakistan was in
dire need of both. Over the years, UET has kept its standards of education
and research up to date to cope with the ever changing demands of the
society and thus, the institution has been regarded as a benchmark for the
creation of other engineering institutions in the country. UETs vision is:
To generate knowledge for global competitive advantage and become a
leading World class research University.
To keep its direction of progress aligned with its vision, different
departments of UET have continuously been upgrading their educational
systems over time.
UET has 7 faculties and 26 departments. Departments of
Electrical, Mechanical and Civil engineering are on the top of annual merit
lists of admission and students from all over the country try to pursue an
academic career in here. University has 105 teaching laboratories for the

undergraduates and 15 research laboratories for post graduate students.

Laboratories of some departments also provide commercial testing services
and these tests are entrusted by both private and public sector
organizations.

Keeping in view the needs of a developing country like Pakistan,

over the years, UET has established new degree courses and departments
and has made room for more students. Currently, UET is offering 23
bachelor level programs (16 year education) and 37 MS/MPhil level
programs. Along with these,18 PhD courses are also being taught here. UET
has been ranked 701 in the world universities by QS and 251 in Asian
universities ranking.
Along with maintaining the standards in academics, UET also has
well established sports department and many independently working
societies, providing recreational opportunities and helping students to
groom their creative abilities. There are 7 playgrounds in the university
along with 5 indoor sport courts and 28 outdoor sport courts. Facilities for
nearly all types of sports are provided here including cricket, football,
volleyball, badminton, table tennis and athletics. There are 4 fitness gyms in
the university and 1 swimming pool. Recently, a water polo competition was
held here and team UET won the title.

Independently working societies include technical societies

related with different departments i.e. ICE, ASME, ASHARE and nontechnical societies i.e. Media society, dramatics society, musical society,
debating society and science society. These societies arrange different types
of seminars and events on regular basis helping the students to get relief
from daily academic routines. These societies help students to enhance
their creative abilities and management skills, which are the most important
tools of a professional engineer.
In UET, life of a student outside of their educational departments
is as much joyful as it is exciting in the laboratories. There are a number of
cafeterias including student services center for both boys and girls. These
are the places where students gather after their classes, share laughter,
discuss issues, study in groups, complete assignments and through team
work, help each other to become better versions of themselves.
Students from all over the Pakistan and International students
are mainly responsible for the diversity in the atmosphere of UET and form
it a pleasant amalgam of different cultures, each one, exhibiting its own
uniqueness.
For the students approaching UET outside of Lahore, institute
provides hostel facility covering an area of 839565 sq. feet comprising of
4500 rooms and almost 4600 students reside here.

For day scholars, institute has a well established transportation

system which covers the whole city.

The state of the art library National library of Science and

Technology having a covered area of 33000 sq. ft. has 103,600 books
excluding the e-books. There are 2000 vol. of local journals and 20,000 vol.
of foreign journals subscribed in the library. Library has a fully furnished
reading hall and remains open till the calm midnight. There are more than
10,000 computers being used by students in the University and has a high
speed internet connection which helps the students to stay in touch with
the global data base.
UET is the only country wide academic institution having its own
power generation plant with 3 MW capacity. The auditorium complex with
2500 sitting capacity is really a magnificent piece of architectural and
structural work. There are 12 lecture theaters and 8 seminar halls with a
sitting capacity of 2000 each. Along with these, there are 2 video
conference rooms and 1 multipurpose hall.

UET, under the leadership of its dedicated management, with its

qualified teaching staff and hardworking students is on its way to become
the pillar of the technical and educational development of the country.
UETs mission is:
To play a leading role as a University of Engineering and Technology in
teaching, research, innovation and commercialization that is internationally
relevant and has a direct bearing on national, industrial, technological and
socio-economic development.
UET has a legacy of producing the individuals that has served and
has been serving the country and are all feeding the ONE cause of their
education; A better Pakistan.
UET has been working in the direction of its mission to produce
good engineers, better Pakistanis and best human beings. Let us join hands
to carry this mission to a conclusive end under the banner of UET.

UET cares its students and give them loan facility. Those who are unable to
pay full fee, they can use the loan facility but they have to pay it back after
the completion of their degree in easy installments. Besides this, there are
many scholarships available for the needy and deserving students.

Muhammad Shahid
Topper of ECAT 2013 (367/400)
Electrical-13

I attempted just three entrance tests

more specifically
1. PIEAS (was unable to attempt over
15 questions, Merit number 34th)
2. NUST (was unable to attempt over
20 questions in Maths section, pretty
bad time management, still got 67th
Merit number)
From these two experiences what
dawned to me was that every entrance
test is meant to be easily attemptable;
the key is time management and sharp
reading skills. From sharp reading skills I
mean grasp the basic question from a

statement of three to four lines. Examiners usually provide extra

information so as to confuse the students. Try to solve that section in which
you are 100% confident that you know it from the depth.
The sequence I followed was:
1. Physics: No rocket science needed in this section just make sure that you
don't confuse yourself with the extra knowledge provided in the question as
I have mentioned examiners do so only to confuse the students
2. Math: Solve easy questions first and left the difficult ones to be solved at
the end if you are left with time otherwise take the risk of a wild guess
3. Chemistry: The questions in this section are mostly book lines and be
mentally clear while choosing an answer
4. English: This section is entirely up to the luck of a particular session.
With 20 min in hand, I had done over 95 MCQs while attempting ECAT, in
which I solved the much difficult problems in the Mathematics section.
Thats what you need to take care off.
Session '16 Best of LUCK :)

ECAT 2013 (335/400)
Mechanical-13

I was attempting my ECAT paper hoping to

get more than 280 marks. I was sure of one
thing: I am good at Physics & Math. I
strongly believed that I could never be
defeated by anyone in these subjects. I had
prepared Chemistry as well as I could. I
didnt prepare English at all, because
during my one month session at KIPS
Multan It seemed to me that I couldnt
pass in it. The paragraphs that were
practiced there were of such type that l
could hardly attempt two or three out of
fifteen or twenty right. So it was in my
mind, I would left that portion.

Time is too short, this sentence was going through my mind. The
arrangement was fixed in my mind; Chemistry1st, Physics2nd and Math3rdand I
followed the same. While I was attempting my Chemistry portion, I marked
one question wrong. It was too easy. I slow down and attempted remaining
paper with too much care. I learned if I go too much fast, Id mark many
other easy questions wrong. After attempting fifteen questions of math,
since remaining were difficult for me or required too much calculation, I put
a glance at English. The very first question was easy. It was something like I
didnt need to read the paragraph to answer that. After that I read the
paragraph and attempted that portion. 10 out of 10 were easy. I returned to
Math and solve as much question as I can. After attempting paper, I was
sure I didnt make guess except one. I attempted 90 questions.85 were right
and with the grace of Allah Almighty I got 335 marks. (Highest were 336 in
Multan) How I was able to get such good marks? How I prepared for ECAT?
What I learned from ECAT? Here are some words for you.

Self-studys importance can never be denied during ECAT

preparation. I only attended ECAT session for 25-30 days. After that I studied
text books & ordinary key books that I used during my F.Sc at home. I read
one chapter from textbook and pick one of my objective books and solve
MCQs of that chapter from that book. Next time when I read that chapter I
used other key book or solve five years papers (Punjab Board) MCQs. I
always had 2 key books of Physics (Smart Physics by Arshad Khawar, KIPS
ordinary short question & MCQs books) and one of Chemistry(College
Chemistry). I solved past papers of Maths only. I always tries to minimize my
pick up time. These books helped me to develop my skills.
Draw yourself from fear of ECAT. Develop BELIEF in yourself.
That is not a thing of two months. From the start of F.Sc, practice your
subjects. Dont try to remember the answers of MCQs. Try to remember
their logic. Belief would be developed itself.
Dont be Hurry. Calm Down. Divide your time for each subject &
try to attempt all subjects whether you studied them well or not. But dont
make guess initially. Try to attempt only those questions initially about
which you are sure.
The most important thing in paper is numbering. See the
number of question, then answer correspondingly. One wrong mark means
at least ten questions wrong e.g. If you mark question no 26 answer in 27,
then on further all will be wrong. The other mistake students make is they
attempt 2nd portion first, but answer start from no 1. Avoid these blunders.
Prayers never go fruitless. Always beg to HIM. He always replies.
Remember Only you are responsible for everything that
happens to you. Every student that joins KIPS or STARS doesnt get
admission in UET, NUST or GIKI. Only those who struggle for their dreams,
live their dreams.

You have to read text books but now in a

different style so that you can understand
each line, for chemistry and physics
thoroughly studying theory and learning
new methods to solve lengthy problems in
short span of time, but for mathematics
much more practice is required, practice
with the basic concepts and when you will
become master of basics only then switch
to short techniques although there are
only a few types of questions for which you
can find short techniques otherwise
practice harder! Also solve some MCQs
and give some mock tests. Best of Luck !
Entry test is not a rocket science. It is just a
process in which you can succeed by just
proper planning and understanding. Text
books are best source for entry test
preparation. Entry test is just like a T20
match and you have to do everything
quickly so never be casual in any case.
Read
the
question
carefully
for
understanding it's meaning and guessing
the exact answer. Attempt the easy
questions first as it will relax your nerves
and give confidence to think about difficult
questions. After solving easy questions
come back towards the difficult questions
with better confidence.

There is no motivation for ECAT as such.

You just need to go through the whole
concepts of books. In fact it is the essence
of your concepts. Allah has given the same
brain to everyone. Now it is up to you how
to use it. We all have the tools, we all have
learned the methods, praying to Allah will
do the luck, The mixture of all this will
make an efficient way for you.

"Don't go for cramming go for concepts

they're all that matters."

"The thing that will help you the most is practice. Try
not to miss entry test of Universities like NUST, PIEAS,
FAST and GIKI even if your main goal is to get
admission in UET. Also attempt online ECAT practice
tests on different forums. During entry test time
management is the key. Once you achieve a high
aggregate ( ECAT and FSc score combined), it doesn't
mean that you should only go for top merit
departments. Choose the field in which your most of
the interest lies."

At times, hurdles in the path may seem so huge

that they are forgetfully taken as destinations.
Entry tests happen to fall in that class. But once
you go beyond them, youll find out that theres so
much more to a holistic education that you have
been missing owing to Macaulays educational
system. Yet, to enjoy the realization and the and
extra-curricular opportunities UET has academic to
offer, you need to burn the midnight oil. We hope
you do it well. May the Force be with you!
ECAT isn't just a knowledge test , to be fair its merely
a pressure test. Do not stay behind , just walk into
your exam room with the GAME FACE on and play
right to conquer your paper. You might know
everything there is about ECAT but something you
shouldn't forget is to stay undefeated by your mind
games. Remember where there is a will there is a
way :). This is time you finally become one of us , a
proud UETIAN. Good luck session 2k16

UET Lahore is a prestigious institute which respects
and motivates hard work and intellect. The
teachers deliver the knowledge with utmost
diligence and responsibility. They thoroughly look
into the students' progress and studies making
them reach greater heights. Every young individual
strives hard to make it to the merit list. The first
step is taking the ECAT. One must prepare for it
properly with full concentration through books and
internet. Once, sitting in the examination hall, the
mind should be relaxed and panic should be
avoided as much as possible because mistakes are
most likely to be made in a tensed state of mind.
You will have ample of time to go about each and
every question thus it must be read carefully and
multiple times. Since this test has negative marking
policy, the questions you are uncertain about
should be exempted and left as it is.
Best of Luck !
Never stop believing, never stop trying and NEVER
QUIT! The fact that you are not where you want to
be should be enough MOTIVATION
