22 Hillary DePiano BRIGHELLA. Master! Boy is Morgana ever pissed! I just saw her henchwoman, Smeraldina. Wait’ll you hear this. The clown’s ap- pearance and the idea for the banquet were both planted by Celio, the good magician, and Morgana’s most bitter rival. The two have never met on this earth, but he has foiled Morgana’s plans for years and she vows to destroy him. He's the one who sent Truffaldino here to break the spell and to protect the prince and King. NARRATOR. (Claps his hands. Everyone freezes. To audience:) You get- ting all this? (Claps his hands again and the scene continues.) CLARICE. So, let's kill the jester! Quickly! I have a gun in my room and a few knives... LEANDRO. No. No. We shall use more magic potions from Morgana. CLARICE. (Sarcastic:) Oh, they worked sooooo well on the Prince. That was a nice speedy death. (LEANDRO looks as though he is about to attack. BRIGHELLA separates them.) BRIGHELLA. My lord and lady! Calm yourselves! Fata Morgana (Chord.) herself will be here tonight for the festivities. She will fin- ish off Truffaldino once and for all and make sure the prince never laughs. She sends word to double the amount of poison you slip into his medicine today and to attend the party as if nothing was amiss, for if he does not laugh tonight, he will be dead by morning. CLARICE. Well that would be wonderful. BRIGHELLA. (Hannibal Lector:) Hello Clarice. CLARICE. Could you please not do that? It really freaks me out. LEANDRO. Come. We must go and plan for tonight. (Begins to exit. The others pause.) BRIGHELLA. With all due respect, sir, didn’t we just plan for tonight? CLARICE. Yeah, that’s what I thought we were doing. LEANDRO. True. (A pause. Then, exactly as before:) Come. Let us get off the stage so that the next scene can get on... (He exits.) BRIGHELLA. (To CLARICE:) That works. (Ghe shrugs in agreement and the two exit.)
