the backdrop of the castle. He claps once to signal the beginning.
Chaos as characters begin to emerge from all sides pushing scenery
and carrying props, costumes and other actors, bumping into
each other in their excitement to begin the show. The three girls,
who later play the oranges [in their Act 1 costumes, NOT the
oranges outfits], skip across the stage hand-in-hand. Some of the
actors preset the frozen KING and PANTALONE and position

TRUFFALDINO and whispers to him for a moment. He points
out TARTAGLIA to him and then the two part, TRUFFALDINO
to offstage, the NARRATOR to the audience where he takes a seat
to watch. No other character acknowledges the NARRATOR as
anything more than an obstacle in their path. They set up for the
first scene and clear the stage and the NARRATOR claps to signal
{for them to begin.)
