The heat pump unit is designed to be

installed outside. In cold conditions it
will produce a lot of condensate water
from the evaporator. This needs to drain
away without causing any damage to
the surrounding building or material.

Inlet water pressure 500 kPa

Cold water expansion valve 700 kPa
P&T Valve (supplied) : 850 kPa
Water connections 20mm, 3/4 inch BSP
Duplicated inlet and outlet water connections

The location of the tank and heat pump

is flexible. Good design considerations
should be given to:
1. Position the water tank in close proximity to bathroom and kitchen area
to reduce heat waste.
2. Minimise the distance between storage
tank and heat pump for efficiency.
3. Position the heat pump to maximise
any sun, ambient warmth or reflected
heat from wall or building.

PLUMBING COMPONENTS:
Siddons Solarstream recommends the Quickie Kit (QIK15-SHP) or equivalent for quality plumbing components for longer life
of your Solarstream Water Heater to make installation of your water heater more professional and easier. Water contains
minerals which can cause problems especially when heated. Also, high water pressure will reduce tank life so the Quickie Kit
contains a pressure limiting valve rated to 2,000 kPa that will deliver water to the storage tank at an easy 500kPa. This will
deliver good water pressure but not excessive pressure that will waste water and shorten tank life. The components of the
Quickie Kit have been designed to meet new plumbing regulations including insulating gloves on components.
The top 3 way tee is specially designed to supply both untempered water and the hot water supply to the Tempering Valve.
The Bottom inlet Tee is designed to incorporate the Pressure Limiting Valve, the non-return isolating valve and the cold water
expansion control valve as well as supplying the cold side of the tempering valve with cold water.

Quickie Kit (QIK15-SHP) Components:

The Pressure and Temperature Relief (PTR) valve is designed to relief the increase of pressure caused by water expanding
during the normal heating cycle of the water heater.
The Expansion Control Valve (ECV) is designed for use on the cold water inlet line to the water heater to take the load off
the PTR valve to and releases drips of cold water to the drain line which will save energy and also reduce possible issues
from minerals in the water such as calcium which are more likely to come out of solution when heated, hence reducing
mineral deposits on the PTR valve.
The High Performance Tempering Valve (TVA) is designed to mix heated water (60C+) and cold water by mixing both
hot and cold water to achieve tempered water at (50C) and will automatically adjust itself to ensure that the tempered
water does not exceed (50C) to the outlets within the dwelling. This is a solar rated valve meaning that it is designed to
withstand hot water temperatures up to 99C.
The Non Return Ball Valve with Strainer (NRI) is used to prevent backflow and to isolate the water heaters cold water
supply should plumbing maintenance be required and comes with a strainer to protect other plumbing components from
debris such sand and grit.
The Pressure Limiting Valve (PLV) is designed to reduce the incoming water pressure to 500kPa to help prevent and
damage to plumbing components and premature activation of the PTR and ECV valves. This will reduce pressures up to
500kPa depending on incoming water pressures. The valve connects easily to the NRI valve for ease of installation and
comes with an insulating glove to ensure compliance with plumbing standard AS:3500.

Version 5 - 5/12

SECTION 1: PLUMBING
COMPLIANCE

You must be a licensed plumber to install a Solarstream. It is your responsibility to comply with AS/NZ Standards, Building Codes and
Trade Codes of Practice for compliant installations of domestic hot water heaters. In Australia, for installation of Solarstream Fluorocarbon gas models, you should hold a Restricted Split System Air Conditioning Installation and Decommissioning License (Certificate
II course under the Australian Refrigeration Council's code RSS03) covering air conditioning and heat pump split systems. You do not
require this licence for installation of the R290 Hydrocarbon gas models which is a naturally occurring refrigerant with Global Warming
Potential of just 3, making it ozone and greenhouse friendly. Outside location is also important for the efficient operation of the heat
pump with the air outlet preferably facing away from the prevailing wind to improve heat pump performance. The Fluorocarbon gas
is inflammable whilst the Hydrocarbon gas cannot sustain flammibility if released in a well ventilated space outside. The heat pump
should be installed in a well ventilated location outside for heat pump effectiveness and safety. The Hydrocarbon gas has a distinctive
"rotting cabbage" odour so that any possible leak can be identified for rectification.

STORAGE TANK INSTALLATION

Leave adequate clearance above the appliance, preferably the length of the water heater, for inspection or service to the anode through
the top lid. If adequate room is unavailable, this appliance must be disconnected and removed for service. It is best to install the
storage tank close to the outlet that has the greatest usage of hot water, such as the laundry or bathroom. Ensure adequate access
for service to the sensor and Pressure and Temperature Relief (PTR) valve. Ensure the specification label is visible.
OUTDOOR
For outdoor (external) installations, a 100mm thick plinth or concrete base pad is recommended in
accordance with Australian Standard AS/NZS 3500.4 to properly support the Solarstream storage
tank such that the storage tank is assured of remaining in a vertical position throughout its usable
life and not lean over due to possible erosion of soil under the plinth, or such risk.
SIESMIC RESTRAINT
If you live in area subject to seismic building code, we recommend restraining the tank to a wall
using Stainless Steel bands that do not pierce the tank.

CONCRETE BASE or
SOLID WOODEN PLINTH
GROUND LEVEL

LEGIONELLA

To kill legionella bacteria that may grow in potable water, AS 3498 requires that a storage water heater raise the water temperature
at the hot water outlet to at least 60C. Therefore we recommend you leave your Solarstream switched on when you are away, where
it will typically turn on every couple of hours every several days to raise the water temperature in the tank back to 60C.

SCALDING

To minimize scalding, especially for those people in high scald risk categories such as young children, people with potentially incapacitating medical conditions and elderly people, the Solarstream must be installed in accordance with the Australian Standard AS/NZS
3500.5 to ensure that new hot water installations deliver tempered water not exceeding 50C to bathrooms and other outlets used
primarily for personal hygiene purposes.

ANODE

The Solarstream is fitted with a magnesium (cap colour code black) or aluminium alloy anode for hard water (cap colour code 'Blue').
The anode should be examined or replaced once every 5 years by a licensed plumber to ensure its ongoing protection against the
possibility of tank rusting. The Solarstream should always be switched on to avoid possible accumulation of hydrogen gas which is
flammable and may accumulate in the system. This may be observed as 'spluttering' when a hot tap is opened initially. To dissipate
this gas safely, we recommend that a hot tap be turned on for several minutes or until discharge of gas ceases. Use a sink, basin or
bath outlet, but not at a dishwasher, clothes washer or other appliance. During this procedure, there must be no smoking, open flame,
or any electrical appliance operating nearby. If hydrogen is discharged through the tap it will probably make an unusual sound similar
to air escaping.

FILLING

Fill the storage tank by opening all hot water taps and opening the cold water inlet to allow air in the system to be expelled. Close each
hot water tap as the flow becomes free of air; check all pipes for any signs of leaks. Power should not be turned on until the storage
tank is completely filled with water as this will void your warranty.

PRESSURE AND TEMPERATURE RELIEF (PTR) VALVE

It is recommended that hot water outlet pipes are fully insulated with weather proof insulation such as Armaflex. The hot water outlet
pipe should be angled down at about 15C minimum for the first 250mm after exiting from the storage tank outlet. This will create a
heat trap that will avoid any thermal siphoning from the storage tank. It is normal for the PTR valve to discharge water, especially after
the heating cycle has completed and this should be discharged into a drain, clear of paved areas to prevent possible damage or injury.

INSTALLATIONS REQUIRING EXTENSION LINES

The standard heat pump comes with 2m of pre-charged refrigerant lines. This is designed for a standard side by side
installation with the heat pump located to the left or the right of the storage tank. Many installations will require the
heat pump outdoor unit and the storage tank to be positioned further apart tahn the standard side by side configuration.
For such installations, a pre-charged extension kit with longer a longer sensor lead will be required.

Version 5 - 5/12

SECTION 3: HEAT PUMP TO TANK CONNECTION

CONNECTING THE REFRIGERANT LINES TO THE WATER TANK
Step 1
Carefully unwind the copper refrigeration pipes on the heat pump, take care to avoid kinking
the pipes. The pipes are quite hard copper and will kink if care is not taken to carefully mould
or form the curve required. If a tight bend to the right is required in the refrigeration lines, cut
back the insulation and use a soft copper tube bender to form the bend. The insulation must
be taped back in place once the bend is made.
Step 2
Remove the access cover on the storage tank, find the two male refrigeration pipe couplers; you
may need to gently pull them out from the storage tank and prise them up gently should you find
them difficult to access.
Step 3 IMPORTANT
Feed the couplers and refrigerant lines through the holes in the access cover to align with the
respective couplers on the tank.
WARNING: You cannot undo the couplers later if you forget this step.
Step 4
Carefully align the male & female couplers before tightening; misalignment can cause rupture or
displacement of the internal O-Ring seal, causing refrigerant leakage & defective performance.
Use some mineral oil on the threads and rubber O-Ring and ensure the coupling nuts are fully
tightened using two spanners, one on each half of the coupling then draw the coupling halves
together tightly.
WARNING: You will feel some resistance when the metal diaphragms are punctured to allow
refrigerant flow but you must keep tightening until you feel the O-Ring seal fully seated
with no thread showing otherwise gas will leak under the high operating pressures.
Step 5
Refit the access cover and retighten the screws.

CONNECTING THE HEAT PUMP UNIT

Step 1
Remove the side cover by removing screw. Pull the cover out slightly at the bottom and push
the cover downwards a few millimetres to release tabs.
Step 2
Check that the flare fittings where the refrigeration lines connect to the heat pump are still very
tight to ensure no gas leakage here. In the unlikely event they are loose, the lines may have leaked
gas and will need to be checked by a refrigeration mechanic.

Step 3
Remove the cover caps on the refrigerant valves at the base of the heat pump.
Step 4
Open the two refrigerant gas flow valves only when you have made sure that all of the connections
have been completed correctly and are tight. Then, use a 5mm hex key and turn both gas valves
anti clockwise until they are fully opened and stop hard.
Note: We recommend using soapy water on the couplers and flare fittings to check any gas leaks.
Step 5
Replace the access cover over the couplers, replace the cover caps on the refrigerant valves and
refit the plastic side cover to the heat pump.
GAS TYPE AND GAS CHARGE
The B models such as 326SMBD are charged with R417A flourocarbon gas which is a blend
gas made principally for R22. The standard gas charge without extension lines is 1.5 kg; with
extension lines you need add 20 grams per metre.
The C models such as 326MCD are charged with R290 hydrocarbon gas which is a natural
refrigerant with no harmful effect to the ozone layer. The standard gas charge without extension
lines is 1.0 kg; with extension lines, you will will need to add 15 grams per metre over the length
of the dual extensions.
Version 5 - 5/12

SECTION 4: ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

CONNECTING THE ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS
The Solarstream is designed for single phase 230~240 V, AC, 50 Hz, 1.38 kW maximum load. AS/NZ 3000 or AS/NZ 3006
Wiring Code and local supply authority regulations apply.
The heat pump should be plugged into standard day rate power points, or alternatively your electrician may connect the
power lead directly wired into an off-peak supply at the main circuit board. Allow for a 10 AMP power supply with circuit
breaker. The Solarstream does not have an electrical booster element.
The Solarstream is supplied with a sensor (T1) to be inserted deep into the sensor socket
immersed inside the storage tank, located above the refrigeration line access cover.
This sensor controls the on / off function of the heat pump. Fine tuning of the sensor
set temperature, when the controller turns the heat pump off, can be made by turning
the knob on the control board + / - with a screw driver. The Dead Band for when the
controller turns the heat pump on again can be similarly adjusted.
There is a second sensor (T2) that operates the de-ice system within the heat pump and
will automatically switch the heat pump into de-ice mode, causing the fan to stop until
the evaporator is clear of ice. This will normally take several minutes before the heat
pump will switch back to its normal heating mode.
There is a third sensor (T3) set against the base of the compressor near the refrigerant suction line that continually monitors
the temperature of the compressor. Should the temperature exceed its operating specification, the heat pump will shut off
automatically. It can be reset by switching the power on / off but the cause of the activation should be investigated by a
refrigeration mechanic. For instance, it could indicate a loss of gas. If you can se tell tale signs of oil (which flows around
the system with the gas) near the heat pump or therefrigeration line couplers on the storage tank, that will confirm a gas
leak that will need to be fixed by a refrigeration mechanic.

Tank sensor is connected to the heat pump and inserted into the tank sensor socket.
Refrigerant gas valves are fully open on heat pump unit.
Check the heat pump continues to run for at least 20 minutes on first start up.
Warm water should be evident at hot taps in about 60 minutes.

SECTION 5: TROUBLE SHOOTING

LOSS OF HOT WATER
Check firstly that the heat pump is connected to an electrical outlet and that power is available at the outlet by testing it with
another electrical product. Check for any signs of oil leaks around the connections to the storage tank and the heat pump
which will signal a possible gas leak. If so, you will require a refrigeration mechanic to fix the leak and re-gas your Solarstream.
Turn the power on / off to re-set the cut-out switch.
WATER IS WARM BUT NOT HOT
Recheck hot water in a couple of hours. It may just have been heavy usage, or a cool ambient temperature which has
affected hot water recovery performance. If your Solarstream seems to be operating for too long each day, over 4 hours at
times under normal domestic family use, it is likely that your refrigerant levels are too low, or you may even have air or moisture
in the refrigerant lines or even have a slow gas leak. You will need to contact a Refrigeration Mechanic to check fix the problem
and re-gas your unit.
MAINTENANCE
For optimal long term performance, we recommend that you periodically check the fin coils of the evaporator and remove
any material deposits restricting air flow with a brush or high pressure garden hose. Annually, we recommend operating the
Pressure and Temperature Relief valve (located at the top of the tank near the hot water outlet) by gently raising and lowering
the lever. If your local water is hard (difficult to lather) or has sediment, we recommend that you ask your plumber how best to
maintain your storage tank.
